Nevada’s Cameron easily captured individual medalist honors, as she shot a 5-under-par 66. She had seven birdies and made par on nine holes.

Nevada coach Brian Leonard said Cameron’s 66 is a school record for the lowest 18-hole round.

Emree Cameron

“Emree started out with a couple of bogies in her first four holes,” Leonard said. “I told her she might have a few bogies but she’ll also have several birdies to offset those bogies…and she did. She birdied three holes on the front nine for her 1-under-par 35.

“She then held it steady at par until she birdied No. 15,” Leonard added. “After this hole, she took advantage of her length off the tee. Her length off of the tee provided her several short wedge shots into the green for her approach shots. She dialed in her wedge shots into the green with four birdies on her last four holes for her 4- under-31 to finish with her 66.”

Just a sophomore, Cameron finished fourth at last year’s Class 2 state tournament. She also won this event a year ago.

GIRLS GOLF: Webb City returns trio with experience, must replace three state qualifiers

Following the graduation of three standouts, the Webb City High School girls golf team will be led by new faces in 2022.

The Cardinals must overcome the loss of the graduated Sydney French, Laya McAllister and Sophia Coulson after the trio concluded the 2021 season at the Class 3 state tournament.

The three players were also the team’s top finishers at the conference and district tournaments. With that, the Cardinals will have a new look this fall.

“We have a very young and inexperienced team and I believe we’ll be playing our best when we get to our conference and district tournaments after we’ve completed our regular season,” Webb City coach Jackson Boyer said.

Webb City has three returning golfers with prior varsity experience—senior Jacie Crouch, junior Langlee Walker and sophomore Emerson Boulware. Crouch finished 33rd at last season’s Central Ozark Conference tourney.

The Cardinals also have five newcomers on the roster this fall—senior Farryn Holcomb, juniors Avry Hodson and Libby Allen and sophomores Aly Byrd and Isabella Manes.

Despite the lack of varsity experience, Boyer noted there’s a lot to like about his team.

“The strength of our team so far is the hard work and dedication I’ve seen,” he said. “We have a great group of athletes that are going to get better as the season progresses and we have a lot of competition on the team for the five varsity spots.”

Boyer is confident his Cardinals can put together a solid season if they improve in all facets of the game as the season progresses.

“Ultimately, we’re going to need to improve our ball striking off the tee,” Boyer said. “We’re working on having a simple approach to the game and improving consistency through the course.

“We are going to put a lot of focus on our short game,” he added. “The team is working very hard on pitching, chipping and putting. Another key to success will be each player building confidence in themselves and each other as the season progresses.”

Webb City will be among the teams competing at the Joplin Lady Eagle Invitational on Aug. 30 at Schifferdecker Golf Course.

“The team is extremely excited to get going and see how we stack up against area schools,” Boyer said. “This is a great group that comes to practice each day very focused on improving their game. I’m looking forward to getting the season started and watching them compete at each tournament.”

BOYS GOLF: CJ’s Spencer earns medalist honors at Carthage; Joplin edges host Tigers for team crown

CARTHAGE, Mo. — With the pressure on, Carl Junction freshman Jack Spencer birdied a sudden death playoff hole to earn medalist honors at Monday’s Abbiatti’s BBQ Carthage Invitational.

After 18 holes were complete at the Carthage Golf Course, CJ’s Spencer, Carthage’s Max Templeman and Republic’s Cason Bekemeier found themselves tied on top of the leaderboard, as all carded even-par 71.

A playoff on hole No. 10 determined who would be the medalist and who would finish second and third.

When all was said and done, Spencer was the invite’s champion, while Bekemeier was the runner-up after making par on the playoff hole and Templeman settled for third.

“It was one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time,” Carl Junction coach Ryan Jones told SoMo Sports. “Hole No. 10 is a par-5. All three kids hit their shot onto the fairway. Jack stuck an iron from about 200 out to five feet. Jack had an eagle putt from five feet that he barely missed and then he tapped in for birdie to win it.”

Jones noted Spencer came through in the clutch.

“He puts a lot of expectations on himself,” Jones said. “He’s a great golfer with a great golfing disposition. He’s certainly got the talent and he’s off to a good start to his high school career. I’m sure he’s on cloud nine right now. But I know he has bigger goals moving forward.”

Spencer recorded four birdies on the day. Templeman had three birdies and an eagle on hole No. 10.

One stroke was all that separated Joplin and the host Tigers in the team standings. Joplin turned in a four-person score of 308, just one stroke better than runner-up Carthage.

The Eagles have now won five events this spring.

Carl Junction (321), Republic (323) and Webb City (330) rounded out the top five teams.

“As a team, we weren’t as sharp as we were last week,” Jones said. “But we were solid. We were right there. If you don’t play great, the local teams in this area will beat you. Carthage is great and Joplin is great. We played okay, but that’s a testament to how good the golf is in our area. It’s been a long time since all four local teams (Joplin, Carthage, Carl Junction, Webb City) have been this good. If you don’t play great, you’re going to get beat.”

After the top three individuals, Carthage’s Britt Coy, Joplin’s Hobbs Campbell and Monett’s Jaxon Bailey all carded 1-over-par 72 to tie for fourth place.

Joplin’s Harry Satterlee shot a 73 and finished seventh overall, while Nevada’s Owen Swearingen and Webb City’s Keegon Dill both carded 75 to tie for eighth.

Joplin’s Wyatt Satterlee finished 10th overall with a 77.

Neosho’s Kytn Francisco and Republic’s Griffin Frey tied for 11th place after shooting 80.

Webb City’s Josh Howard and Carthage’s Owen Derryberry tied for 13th with scores of 81.

In addition to Campbell and the Satterlees, Joplin’s Ian Surbrugg shot an 86 and Gabe De Leon carded 88.

Carthage’s Ben Nicholas carded 85 and Colson Brust finished with a 100.

Also competing for the Bulldogs were Zach Wrensch (82), Noah Williams (84), Tommy Walker (84) and Jacob Teeter (90). Wrensch tied for 15th place.

Also contributing for Webb City Braxten Cahoon (84), Cooper Forth (89) and Levi Lassiter (90).

Neosho’s Xander Woodward and Seneca’s Jace Wilson both carded 84, tying for 18th place with CJ’s Walker and Williams and Webb City’s Cahoon.

Seneca’s Eli Olson shot an 85. McAuley was led by Rocco Bazzano-Joseph (87) and Evan D’Amour (89).

Local golf squads will return to action at next Monday’s Bird-Dog Invitational at Briarbrook Golf Course.

“It’s been a busy two weeks,” Jones said. “I think we’ve only had a few practices because we’ve been playing so much. Now we’ve got a week before we play again. We’re excited to get back to practice so we can work on some things.”

McDonald County’s Allman wins third straight golf tourney; Carthage claims team title on home course

CARTHAGE, Mo. — As the summer months progressed, and as the school year quickly approached, McDonald County’s Lily Allman anxiously wondered if she’d get a senior season on the links.

Like the countless other high school athletes from across the country, Allman could only wait for the verdict.

“It was nerve-racking this summer,” Allman said. “I played in a lot of summer tournaments, so I tried to stay focused on that because no one knew what was going to happen. I played as much as I could in case we didn’t have a season.”

Eventually, good news arrived, and the prep golf season is underway.

Now, Allman is determined to make the most of the 2020 fall season.

And thus far, she’s doing just that.

A multi-year standout for the Mustangs, Allman earned medalist honors at the 10th annual eCarthage.com Invitational girls golf tournament on a near perfect Monday at the Carthage Golf Course.

“I’m just glad we’re able to play,” Allman said. “I just try to take each tournament one at a time because you never know what could happen. I’m just thankful and I feel blessed that I’m able to play this year. And so far, the season’s been good.”

As far as Allman’s performance on Monday, good would be an understatement.

Allman carded an impressive 2-under-par 69, seven strokes better than the runner-up.

“I actually got off to a rough start today,” Allman said. “But my coach told me to take it one shot at a time and I think I did a good job of doing that. I just tried to relax and go play golf. As soon as I got that mindset, it was a better day.”

Allman made seven birdies and shot par on seven other holes en route to her personal best score.

“I told her, ‘This year you will post a score under-par’ and she did,” Mustangs coach Darryl Harbaugh said. “She started off today with a bogey and then a double-bogey on the first two holes. She was mad and ready to throw down. I told her to calm down and just play her game. Then she got on a roll. She made a heck of a birdie and made a couple of nice putts on the back nine. I don’t think she three-putted today. She did great.”

Pictured is McDonald County’s Lily Allman.

Allman is off to a stellar start to her senior year, as she’s now won three invites in as many weeks.

She took first place at the Carl Junction invite last week at Briarbrook Golf Course with a 75 and also topped the leaderboard at Joplin’s invite two weeks ago at Schifferdecker Golf Course with a 78.

Earlier in the season, Allman placed third at Marshfield’s tournament and sixth at Springfield Catholic’s invite.

“Technically, she started off the season a little slow,” Harbaugh said. “In the first few tournaments, she found a couple of things to work on and places she can improve. And you don’t have to tell her anything twice because she’s always working on her game. And her hard work is paying off. She’s playing great and she’s having a great year.”

In 2019, Allman captured district and sectional titles before finishing 31st at the Class 2 state tournament.

Allman noted she’s highly-motivated to end her prep golf career on a high note.

After the conference tourney on Sept. 29, McDonald County will compete at the Class 3 District 3 tournament in Springfield, where a trip to state will be on the line. This year’s Class 3 state tournament will be held at Twin Hills in Joplin.

“My goal is to compete and do well at districts and to go on to state,” Allman said. “I’d love to be all-state. I just want to do the best I can and let the results take care of itself.”

“I hope she doesn’t put too much pressure on herself the rest of this year,” Harbaugh said. “You can only control one shot at a time. But she knows that.”

CARTHAGE WINS TEAM TITLE, JOPLIN TAKES SECOND

With three golfers in the top nine, the host Carthage Tigers claimed the team championship with a four-person score of 366.

Carthage’s Hailey Bryant was the runner-up with a 5-over-par 76. Bryant made three birdies. Shaely Garrison took seventh place with a 92 and Caitlin Derryberry was ninth with a 95. Aubri Fisher’s 103 rounded out the team scoring.

Competing as an individual, Carthage’s Kim Lopez finished eighth with a 95.

“I thought they all played pretty good,” Tigers coach Lowell Catron said. “Hailey’s score is pretty good. Shaely, Caitlin and Aubrey all had their best rounds, so that was good to see. And we’re getting Rylee Scott back tomorrow, so we’re looking forward to that. We’ll keep teeing it up and we’ll keep trying to play as good as we can.”

The Carthage Tigers pose with the first-place plaque on Monday.

The Joplin Eagles finished second in the team standings with a 395.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” Eagles coach Shannon Neill said. “We’re definitely seeing improvements. We still need to work on the short game for sure.”

Joplin’s Emily Delman placed fourth with a 90 and Campbell Waggoner took 10th with a 98.

Also for the Eagles, Sophia Schwartz shot a 99, Bella Sotlar turned in a 108 and Lindsey Belnap shot a 109.

After Allman and Bryant, Webb City’s Sarah Oathout placed third, with Joplin’s Delman fourth, Seneca’s Kaitlyn Soden fifth and Webb City’s Laya McAllister sixth. All four girls carded 90.

Area teams will compete at Cassville on Thursday.

Golf: Allman earns medalist honors, local teams gain experience at CJ invite

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — McDonald County’s Lily Allman was the individual champion, while Pittsburg and Carthage were the top two teams at the Carl Junction Invitational girls golf tournament on Monday at Briarbrook Golf Course.
Allman carded a 3-over-par 75 to claim medalist honors. The Mustangs’ returning state qualifier shot a 35 on the front nine and a 40 on the back.
Allman is off to a solid start to her senior year, as she also won Joplin’s invite last week at Schifferdecker Golf Course. In 2019, Allman captured district and sectional titles before finishing 31st at the state tournament.

Pittsburg’s Samantha Maceli (77) and Hannah Holloman (80) finished second and third, respectively.
The Purple Dragons finished with a team score of 384, four strokes better than shorthanded Carthage. Webb City (410) and Joplin (414) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the team standings.

CARTHAGE RESULTS
Carthage junior Hailey Bryant carded an 83 (41-42) and finished fourth. Bryant is a returning state qualifier who was the runner-up at last year’s Central Ozark Conference tourney.
Also for the Tigers, Shaely Garrison was seventh with a 95 and Caitlin Derryberry finished 10th with a 99. Ava Lacey finished 16th and Aubri Fisher tied for 21st.
“I was very pleased,” Tigers coach Lowell Catron said. “Caitlin Derryberry had her best round ever. Shaely Garrison had her best round ever. Hailey shot an 83…not too bad today. And the cool thing is, with all of them having good rounds, they all have things they can work on and improve on. When they have their best rounds, and they see room for improvement, it’s a good thing.”
The Tigers took second even though they hit the links without Rylee Scott, who has been the team’s No. 2 player. Scott finished third behind Allman and Bryant at last week’s Joplin invite.
“With Rylee gone, we feel pretty good finishing where we did,” Catron said. “Our girls have been working hard and practicing hard. I can’t ask for anything more than that.”
Catron noted it’s already been an unusual start to a new season.
“Everything’s so up in the air,” Catron said. “We don’t even know what class we’re in yet. We don’t know where the districts are yet.”

According to a recent press release from the Missouri State High School Activities Association, classifications for some fall sports, including girls golf, are set to be released on Sept. 21.

JOPLIN RESULTS
Joplin’s Emily Delman placed fifth with an 89. She had a 47 on the front nine and a 42 on the back.
Bella Stotlar shot a 104 and finished 12th. Also for the Eagles, Lindsey Belnap was 15th, Sophia Schwartz tied for 17th and Campbell Waggoner was 20th.
“Emily had a really good day,” Eagles coach Shannon Neill said. “And we had a lot of improvements on our team overall. This is a difficult course, so I’m really pleased with how they played today.”
Neill noted her program’s numbers are up this fall.
“We’re blessed to have 10 girls out for golf this year,” Neill said. “It’s great to see the program growing.”

WEBB CITY RESULTS
Sarah Oathout carded a 90 and finished in sixth place to lead Webb City. The returning state qualifier had a 46 on the front and a 44 on the back.
“Sarah’s not quite where she wants to be yet, but she did make progress from last week,” Cardinals coach Jackson Boyer said.
Webb City’s Laya McAllister tied for seventh with a 95, while teammate Sydney French placed ninth with a 97. Sophia Coulson tied for 38th, while Eve Cartwright was 50th.
“I saw an improvement from last week,” Boyer said. “We’re still not meeting our goals, but it’s early enough in the season that we hope we keep improving. We’re just trying to lower the team score every week.”

CARL JUNCTION RESULTS

Anna Burch was Carl Junction’s top finisher. She shot a 114 and tied for 17th.
Also for the Bulldogs, Rylee Sprague was 28th, Kris Smith took 34th, Jasmine Woerner finished 36th and Chloe Mitchell was 38th.
“We had a lot of young players come out this year, so I’ve been watching them continually improve,” Bulldogs coach Corey Clingan said. “Some of these girls haven’t been playing golf for very long, so seeing the strides they’re making is very pleasing.”
The Bulldogs lost four-year standout Jenna Teeter to graduation. Teeter is now playing at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

INVITE NOTES: Seneca’s Kaitlyn Soden finished 11th with a 103, while McDonald County’s Jolie Stipp shot a 104 and tied Sotlar for 12th. Nevada was led by Katie Pennington, who finished 19th with a 114.
Area golf teams will compete at Nevada on Friday.
