LADY MUSTANG CLASSIC: First half surge leads Webb City past Carl Junction

ANDERSON, Mo. — Webb City scored the final 10 points of the first half and never trailed after intermission on the way to a 46-32 win over Carl Junction on Tuesday in a consolation bracket contest of the 2023 Lady Mustang Classic at McDonald County High School.

Up nine at the break, Webb City outscored Carl Junction 18-13 in the second half.

Carl Junction led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, with junior forward Dezi Williams scoring 10 points in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs led 19-18 after two straight hoops from senior forward Kylie Scott, but the Oral Roberts signee picked up her third foul and had to go to the bench.

Webb City closed the first half on a game-changing 10-0 run, with two buckets from Addie Burns and one apiece from Malorie Stanley, Jenna Schulz and Adalyn Maxwell.

With the late surge, the Cardinals held a 28-19 halftime advantage.

Scott scored the first basket of the second half, but then picked up her fourth foul of the contest on an offensive foul call.

The Cardinals outscored the Bulldogs 9-5 in the low-scoring third quarter for a 37-24 lead.

The Bulldogs scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, but Scott fouled out with just over six minutes left on another charge call on a drive through the lane.

Carl Junction pulled within seven with three minutes left after a pair of buckets inside from Williams, but Webb City scored the final eight points of the game for the final margin.

Eight players scored for Webb City’s balanced attack, as Stanley and Burns recorded 11 points apiece and Abby Sargent added nine.

Williams scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Scott added 12 points in limited minutes.

Webb City (2-5) will play Bentonville West in the tourney’s fifth place game at 3:30 on Wednesday.

Carl Junction (4-4) will return to action next Tuesday at home against McDonald County.

LADY MUSTANG CLASSIC: Despite solid effort, Webb City falls to Springdale

ANDERSON, Mo. — Despite a solid effort, Webb City’s girls basketball team suffered a 64-45 setback to Springdale (Arkansas) on Monday in an opening-round contest of the 2023 Lady Mustang Classic at McDonald County High School.

Springdale improved to 7-1, while Webb City fell to 1-5.

Ignited by a full-court press, Springdale scored nine unanswered points at the end of the first quarter to take a 19-7 lead.

Down 25-11, Webb City used a 9-2 run to pull within seven, with Malorie Stanley, Abby Sargent and Kirra Long contributing points during the surge.

At the break, the Bulldogs held a 29-20 advantage.

A trey from Stanley trimmed Webb City’s deficit to nine at 35-26, but Springdale closed the third quarter on a 14-2 surge for a 49-28 cushion.

The Cardinals put together a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs never relinquished their lead.

A senior guard, Stanley led the Cardinals with 16 points.

Also for the Cardinals, Sargent scored nine points, Jenna Schulz added eight and Addie Burns had five.

Webb City is playing without a key performer, as senior guard Mia Robbins is out of action after suffering an injury in the final game of the Carthage Invitational.

Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, the champions of this year’s Carl Junction Classic. Charleen Hudson scored 19 points, while Kaiya McCoy added 16 and Jakayla Bunch had 15.

Webb City will meet either Farmington or Carl Junction at 4:30 on Tuesday in a consolation bracket contest. Carl Junction was slated to play Farmington on Monday night.

BOYS HOOPS PREVIEW: Webb City returns standout guards, plenty of depth in ’23-24

Webb City returns a group of standout guards entering the 2023-24 season.

And with three returning starters, and plenty of overall team depth, expectations are high once again in Webb City.

“Our staff is excited to get the season started and watch this group compete,” Webb City coach Jason Horn said. “We return a very athletic group of guys who gained valuable experience in some big games at the varsity level last season. I think we can compete with any team on our schedule. For me, the most important thing is to see our players grow individually and collectively as a unit.”

Webb City’s returning starters are senior guard Barron Duda and junior guards Holton Keith and Eli Pace.

The 6-foot-3 Duda earned all-conference and all-district recognition as a junior after averaging 14 points and six rebounds a game. Duda made 54 3-pointers last winter.

“Barron had a great junior season,” Horn said. “Barron’s a tremendous shooter who can score the ball from all three levels.”

The 6-1 Keith averaged 10.5 points, four assists and just under two steals per contest last season, while the 6-foot Pace contributed 6.5 points, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals a game as the team’s floor general.

“Holton is a great leader and on-ball defender,” Horn said. “He plays the game with unmatched energy and toughness. I think he has the potential to be one of the better players in the area.

“Eli will run the point for us again this season,” Horn continued. “He’s a high IQ player who makes everyone around him better. His ability to score and distribute the basketball makes him a tough matchup for our opponents.”

Other athletes returning with prior varsity experience are 6-foot senior guard Omari Jackson, 6-4 junior forward Joel Hendrix and 5-8 sophomore guard Gabe Johnson.

“Omari is a tremendous athlete who plays the game with a great deal of toughness,” Horn said. “He has a quick first step and can finish at the rim. Joel has great touch around the basket. His length, athleticism and ability to shoot the basketball will make him a tough matchup in the post. Gabe is a hard-nosed competitor on the court. He’s an explosive athlete and a tremendous playmaker.”

Junior forward Joseph DeGraffenreid and sophomores Slade Hurd (G), Trae Turner (G) and Dalton Riggs (F) are other players who have the potential to make an impact at the varsity level.

“Joseph can spread the floor with his ability to shoot the basketball,” Horn said. “Trae is a very skilled and athletic guard who can finish plays at the rim. Slade is a solid guard who can shoot the ball from behind the arc. Dalton is a fundamentally solid player with a great motor who can finish plays around the basket.”

Horn noted there’s a lot to like about this year’s group, especially its guard play.

“Team speed should be a plus for us again this season and we will look to speed the tempo up on both ends of the floor,” he said.

Of course, every team has its areas of concern heading into a new season. And as always, the Cardinals will be getting off to a late start due to the football team’s successful postseason run.

“I think our depth will improve as the season progresses, but early on we could experience some growing pains with some of our key reserves getting used to the speed and physicality of the varsity game,” Horn said.

Horn said the keys to success are simple this winter.

“No. 1 is we have to stay healthy,” he said. “If we can do that and continue to improve our timing on the offensive end while cutting down on unnecessary fouls defensively, I think we can compete at a high level.”

Webb City went 17-11 last season and ended the season in the district semifinals. The Cardinals lost Trey Roets, Alex Martin and Joe Adams to graduation.

The Cardinals open the 2023-24 season at home against Monett on Dec. 5.

GIRLS HOOPS PREVIEW: Webb City features experienced backcourt trio

The experienced backcourt trio of Mia Robbins, Malorie Stanley and Kirra Long will lead the Webb City girls basketball team this winter.

In addition to the three returning guards, the Cardinals will feature several newcomers in big roles this winter.

“We are really excited about the group of girls we have out this year,” Webb City coach Lance Robbins said. “They are very coachable and have a desire to compete. We have a good mix of youth and veterans that we believe will keep getting better as the season progresses and they play more together. We look forward to seeing what this group can accomplish.”

Mia Robbins will once again be a key performer for the Webb City girls basketball team. File photo.

Mia Robbins is a varsity veteran entering her senior season, as she’s been a key performer for her father’s squad the last several years. She averaged just under six points per game last season while leading the team in steals and 3-point percentage.

“We expect Mia to provide us with leadership and to increase her scoring this season,” Coach Robbins said.

Stanley is a senior and Long is a junior. Both scored about five points per game last winter. And both players should have expanded roles this year.

“Mal can be a difference maker on both ends of the floor for us,” Robbins said. “And we expect her to be a big contributor this season. Kirra has the potential to have a breakout season. She can create off the dribble and has improved her 3-point shooting.”

Sophomore guard Kylee Sargent and juniors Brynn Gilchrist (F) and Kamdyn Myers (G) are players who could contribute at the varsity level this winter.

“Kylee will miss the first part of the season due to injury, but we expect her to be a big part of our success when she gets back on the floor,” Robbins said. “Brynn should help us defensively and with rebounding. Kamdyn is a solid defender who could compete for playing time at the varsity level.”

Junior post player Jenna Schulz is another newcomer who is expected to contribute.

“She’s an athletic post that can defend, rebound and run the floor,” Robbins said.

Other newcomers who could see playing time this winter include sophomore Karsyn Cahoon and freshmen Abby Sargent, Addie Burns, Adalyn Maxwell, Kaelyn Maxwell and Jocelyn Maxwell. Burns and the Maxwell triplets provide height inside.

With the season opener quickly approaching, Coach Robbins noted there’s a lot to like about this year’s group.

“We believe one of our biggest strengths is that we are a well-rounded team,” Robbins said. “We have about four or five kids that on a given night could get us 15-20 points. With several scoring options we could cause opponents problems defensively. We are scoring the ball better than we have in recent years. Another strength is our kids’ willingness to learn. They have been very coachable, and practice has been fun.”

Last year, Webb City went 18-11 overall and 5-4 in the always-tough Central Ozark Conference. The Cardinals ended last season with a loss in the district title game against eventual state runner-up Carl Junction.

The Cardinals lost three starters from last year’s squad, as Kate Brownfield and Izzy Lopez graduated, and all-state post player Sami Mancini transferred to Link Academy.

Robbins is optimistic the Cardinals can put together another solid season this winter.

“We want to build off that success we had last year,” Robbins said. “Although we will be a different looking team and have adjusted some things schematically to fit our personnel, we still feel like we will be a very competitive basketball team.”

Robbins added there’s still plenty of work to do if the Cardinals want to peak at the end of the season.

“A big concern for us going into the season is rebounding,” Robbins said. “We really need a few kids to step up and take ownership of that defender/rebounder role for our team. We have some kids that are capable of doing that and we’re confident that they will get the job done. It sounds cliche, but staying healthy is a big key to our success. Another big key will be how quickly some of our younger players adjust to varsity level play.”

Webb City will meet Bentonville at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Carthage Invitational. The team’s first home game is Dec. 5 against McDonald County.

WRESTLING PREVIEW: Young Webb City squad features returning state qualifier Taylor

Returning state qualifier Colt Taylor is expected to lead the way for the Webb City wrestling team this season.

A senior, Taylor finished second at 132 pounds at last year’s district tournament before concluding the season at the Class 3 state championships.

Taylor, who earned 28 wins as a junior, finished third in his weight class at last year’s COC Tournament.

Seniors Cooper Heilbrun, Bronson Collard and Carson Farmer and sophomore Blayke Leonard are Webb City’s other returning athletes with prior varsity experience.

For the Webb City girls, junior Emma Combs and sophomore Layla Espinoza are returning starters.

Webb City coach Jamie Williams noted he’s excited to see how his squad performs this winter.

“We are a fairly young team,” Williams said. “Having a returning state qualifier (Colt Taylor) is going to be a huge bonus. Also, both Layla and Emma are returning with lots of experience from last year. The strengths of the team are that we have a returning state qualifier. And with the girls we have two returning varsity wrestlers. This will help us with our younger athletes on the team. We also have some underclassmen and women that have previous experience that they can build on.”

With so many newcomers in the varsity lineup, Williams hopes to see steady progress throughout the season.

“We are going to be a younger team with a lot of learning to take place,” Williams said. “Once we get going with the season it will go fast. We will have a lot of opportunities to grow as a team with our competitions that we are going to. We are going to be a younger team so being able to go out and compete will help a lot. Being able to get exposed to lots of different styles of wrestling and being able to see how the kids react will be huge this year.”

Williams noted the team’s keys to success are not complicated.

“We need to show up, outwork everyone else, hold ourselves accountable and learn every time we step on the mat,” he said.

Webb City’s boys will host Nevada and Reeds Spring on Nov. 28. The Webb City girls are at Diamond on Nov. 21.

DISTRICT FOOTBALL: Webb City routs Belton, advances to title game

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Webb City Cardinals showed no signs of rust after a bye week.

In an explosive start, top-seeded Webb City scored on its first four offensive plays in dramatic fashion en route to a dominating 71-20 win over fourth-seeded Belton on Friday night in the Class 5 District 7 semifinals at Cardinal Stadium.

“We had a great week of practice last week and it carried over to this week,” Webb City coach Ryan McFarland said. “We wanted to clean some things up in the bye week and I think we proved we did that tonight. We’ve really been emphasizing getting off to a fast start. All year it seemed like we went into halftime struggling a little bit before playing better in the second half. Playing better in the first half was a priority and I think we accomplished that tonight.”

Webb City (8-2) will host third-seeded Carthage (7-4) in the district title game next Friday night.

“It should be a great environment and it will be a big test for us,” McFarland said. “Who else would you want to play to try and win a district championship?”

Playing in front of a large home crowd on John Roderique Field, Webb City built a commanding 64-7 lead by halftime in the program’s first-ever meeting with Belton.

The Cardinals scored 37 unanswered points to start the night.

“We were doing things right and the offensive line played really well,” McFarland said of the fast start. “That group has played well all year. And at this time of the year, you like to see the guys doing the things they’ve been coached to do.”

GAME RECAP

On his team’s first offensive snap of the night, Webb City sophomore quarterback Gabe Johnson sprinted 80 yards to the end zone.

After Belton’s second punt of the night, the Cardinals once again needed just one play to score. Johnson ran 54 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the touchdown, giving Webb City an early 14-0 advantage with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter.

The Cardinals made it three touchdowns on three plays when senior running back Omari Jackson, in his first action since Week 3, sprinted 35 yards to give the hosts a 21-0 lead with 3:23 left in the opening frame.

A bad snap resulted in a safety and gave the Cardinals a 23-0 advantage.

Next, Braden McKee completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to Drew Vonder Haar on the fourth offensive play of the night for a commanding 30-0 cushion.

“That’s the kids believing in our system and just doing their jobs,” McFarland said of scoring four times on four plays. “We got a lot of people involved. We keep telling the guys to prepare themselves and make the most of their opportunities. They were able to do that tonight.”

Jackson’s 21-yard touchdown run made it 37-0 early in the second quarter before Belton got on the board on Tyrion Thomas’ 84-yard kick return.

A 56-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Spieker, an 8-yard run by Andrew Elwell, Andrew Young’s 84-yard pick six and Slade Hurd’s 98-yard run made it 64-7 at the break.

After intermission, Jackson Lucas ran for a 95-yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals a whopping 71-7 lead.

Belton scored twice in the fourth quarter against Webb City’s deep reserves for the final margin.

NAMES & NUMBERS

Webb City recorded 578 yards on just 29 plays. The Cardinals ran for 444 yards on 27 attempts and passed for 134 yards on two completions.

Webb City only had possession for 15 minutes, 16 seconds, while Belton had a time of possession of 32:44.

Johnson ran twice for 133 yards and two scores. Alex Dunne converted 9-of-10 PAT kicks.

The 71 points is believed to have tied the school record. Webb City also scored 71 points on Oct. 24 of 2014 against McDonald County (71-0). The Cardinals scored 70 against Nevada in 2004. Those are believed to be the only two times the Cardinals have reached 70 points.

Belton (6-5) compiled 235 yards on 62 plays, with 156 rushing and 79 passing.

The Webb City defense recorded four interceptions.

“Belton has a talented quarterback and we were able to get pressure on him with our D-line,” McFarland said. “We were able to drop our linebackers. It was a great job by our defensive coordinators and our defensive players for sure.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Webb City will host longtime rival Carthage with the district championship on the line next Friday at 7 p.m.

Carthage knocked off second-seeded Raytown South 56-28 in the other semifinal.

Of course, Carthage defeated Webb City 20-13 in Week 7.

“Coach (Jon) Guidie does an awesome job and we know they’re a talented team,” McFarland said. “Our guys wanted a chance to play them again and they’re going to get it. It’s time to get back to work and try to figure out what went wrong last time and we’ll try to fix it. They were the more physical team last time, so that’s going to be a point of emphasis for sure.”

FOOTBALL: Webb City finishes strong, ends skid against Joplin

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The highly-anticipated meeting between state-ranked rivals Joplin and Webb City once again lived up to its usual billing.

But after an even first half, Class 5 No. 2 Webb City made more winning plays after intermission on the way to a convincing 38-21 victory over Class 6 No. 9 Joplin on Friday night inside a packed Cardinal Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 14 at halftime before the Cardinals outscored the Eagles 24-7 in the second half.

“I’m extremely proud of our kids,” Webb City coach Ryan McFarland said. “We faced some adversity. At halftime, we felt like we should have had the lead, but the game was tied. The kids just kept fighting. We talked about getting a stop to start the third quarter and we talked about finishing drives offensively. We were able to do that.”

Of course, Joplin had won the previous four meetings with Webb City.

The Cardinals ended the skid.

“This is big,” Webb City sophomore Gabe Johnson said. “We came out strong and won the game. We kept pushing it in the second half. They’d beat us four years in a row, so this feels good. I’ve been waiting for my turn in this game.”

“Honestly, our kids and coaches were aware of it, but we never talked about it as a team,” McFarland said of attempting to halt the streak. “You don’t want to put too much pressure on the kids. We just wanted to be a week better this week and I think we were.”

Joplin coach Curtis Jasper noted the Cardinals deserved the victory.

“It was a hard-fought, physical game, so hats off to Webb City,” Jasper said. “Webb City played really well, especially up front. We made some mistakes and they had some big defensive stops. In the end, you have to give Webb City a lot of credit. They played very well tonight.”

GAME RECAP

After Joplin’s defense forced a turnover on downs on the first series of the night, the Eagles needed just two plays to go 66 yards, as senior QB Hobbs Gooch completed a short pass to senior tight end Whit Hafer, who rumbled past the defense to the end zone for a 58-yard score.

Webb City responded immediately, as the speedy Johnson returned the ensuing kick 97 yards for a game-tying score.

The Cardinals took a 14-7 lead at the end of the opening frame when senior QB Braden McKee connected with Johnson for a 14-yard touchdown strike. The hosts were able to extend the go-ahead drive after recovering a punt.

Webb City threatened to extend its lead to two scores late in the first half, as the hosts had the ball on the 10-yard line. But a pass into the end zone was picked off by Joplin’s Chavis Coleman.

The Eagles made the most of the takeaway, as the visitors tied the game at 14 with an eight-play, 87-yard drive that was finished off by Jett Beal’s 29-yard reception with 45 seconds remaining in the first half. Joplin also kept the tying drive going by pulling off a fake punt.

“Coach (Alan) Linden does a great job of preparing our special teams,” Jasper noted. “We thought the fake punt was there and we took advantage of it.”

Alex Dunne’s 37-yard field goal gave Webb City a 17-14 lead and was the lone score of the third period.

Webb City’s Brett Korth picked off a Gooch pass on the next series, and the Cardinals extended their lead to 10 on junior Andrew Elwell’s 5-yard scamper.

The Eagles pulled within three with 8:13 left after Aidan Sampson hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Gooch.

Joplin senior Whit Hafer scampers past the Webb City defense during Friday’s game.

But the Cardinals finished strong, scoring a pair of unanswered touchdowns in the final frame.

Johnson sprinted to a 28-yard touchdown with 6:47 left before Webb City’s defense forced a quick three and out on the next series.

“The interception was a big play for them,” Jasper noted. “And the run by Johnson was a huge play.”

The Cardinals put the final touches on the win with 3:09 remaining when Joseph DeGraffenreid caught a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Joplin nearly scored before the end of regulation, but the Webb City defense stopped the Eagles near the goal line before running out the final seconds.

McFarland noted he was proud his team was able to limit the Eagles to one score after the break.

“Our defense has played well all year,” McFarland said. “We were able to get stops. They play hard and they play as a group.”

INJURY REPORT

Webb City took the field without a pair of key performers, as starting running backs Breckin Galardo and Omari Jackson both suffered injuries in last week’s game at Republic.

The Eagles were not at full-strength, either, as they are currently missing standout running back Quin Renfro, a South Dakota State recruit.

Also of note, Joplin’s Gooch and standout offensive lineman Dontrell Holt (Iowa State recruit) were back in the lineup for the Eagles this week.

The Eagles lost a couple of players to injuries on Friday night.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Joplin (3-1) hosts Class 6 No. 4 Nixa (4-0) next Friday.

Jasper said there were positives his team can take away from Friday’s loss.

“It’s just Week 4, so we still have a chance to get better,” Jasper said. “We have another tough opponent next week. We need to get better between now and then.”

Webb City (3-1) hosts Ozark (1-3) in Week 5.

The Cardinals have now won three straight after a Week 1 setback at Nixa.

“It’s been rewarding to watch the kids have success on the field,” McFarland said. “They’ve been rewarded for their efforts.”

FOOTBALL: Webb City knocks off Carl Junction in home opener

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Ryan McFarland has been on the sidelines of countless Webb City home football games over the years, first as a player and then as an assistant coach.

But Friday night’s contest inside Cardinal Stadium was a new experience — it was McFarland’s home debut as the storied program’s head football coach.

In the first home game since 1996 without John Roderique leading the team, Webb City earned a hard-fought 47-28 win over Carl Junction in Week 2 of the 2023 prep football season.

Ryan McFarland

McFarland noted it was a special moment to lead the Cardinals down the hill onto what is now John Roderique Field.

“It was a surreal feeling,” said McFarland, who played football at Webb City before assisting Roderique for several years on the sidelines. “Coach Roderique and I talked several times today and I think we were both kind of lost because we’re in different roles. This is a great community with great players. To lead the team down the hill tonight was a blessing for sure.”

McFarland was handed the game ball after recording his first head coaching victory at Webb City.

“The most special part of getting win No. 1 is it was able to happen here,” McFarland said. “We would have loved to win last week, but to be able to have my first game on John Roderique Field and be able to get the win was great. Our kids played well, so it was a special night.”

After coming up short at Nixa in Week 1, Webb City never trailed in Friday’s matchup with the Bulldogs.

However, the Cardinals were clinging to a slim 21-14 halftime advantage before outscoring the Bulldogs 26-14 in the second half.

Simply put, the Bulldogs made the Cardinals earn the win.

“We were kind of frustrated at halftime because we only had three possessions,” McFarland said. “We only ran 11 plays and didn’t get the chance to get into a groove in the first half. Offensively, we really wanted to open up the playbook tonight. We made some adjustments in the second half. We got on a roll there, and I feel really good about it.”

HAFNER PLEASED WITH BULLDOGS’ EFFORT

Despite the loss, Carl Junction coach Todd Hafner noted he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our kids,” Hafner said. “Our kids played their guts out. We got better from Week 1 to Week 2. That’s all we ask. We asked the kids to give us everything they had tonight, and I don’t think they could have given us anymore.

“Our kids bought in during this last week of practice,” he added. “They understand now what we’re trying to get out of them. The scoreboard isn’t what we wanted, but our kids got better and I think they trust what we’re telling them.”

Of course, Hafner is back leading the Bulldogs for the second time in his coaching career.

“It’s been fantastic,” Hafner said of his return to CJ. “I can’t really put into words how fun it is right now to coach these kids. The community and school are awesome. The administration has been fantastic. These kids have bought in… I can’t be any happier.”

GAME RECAP

Webb City’s Brody Eggleston picked off a pass on the third play of the night, giving Webb City great field position on the 37. Four plays later, sophomore Gabe Johnson took a reverse and ran 20-yards to the end zone with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Marching 74 yards on 14 plays, the Bulldogs tied it up with 2:08 left in the opening frame when senior QB Dexter Merrell connected with junior wide receiver Jaxton Wobken for a 9-yard touchdown strike.

The game wasn’t deadlocked long, as the speedy Johnson took the ensuing kickoff and sprinted 94 yards to the house to give the hosts a 14-7 lead.

A 2-yard touchdown plunge by Carl Junction senior running back Johnny Starks, along with the PAT kick by Gavin Cowger, made it 14-14 with 3:40 remaining in the first half. A 34-yard pass from Merrell to junior Ryder Pyles set up the game-tying score.

Webb City senior quarterback Braden McKee charged into the end zone from 3 yards out with 43 seconds left in the first half, and Alex Dunne’s PAT kick gave the Cardinals a 21-14 cushion at the break.

The Cardinals outscored the Bulldogs 13-7 in both the third and fourth quarters for the final margin.

Carl Junction’s Johnny Starks takes a handoff from Dexter Merrell during Friday’s game at Webb City.

Senior running back Omari Jackson ripped off a 42-yard touchdown run early in the second half, but Carl Junction responded when Merrell scored on a 3-yard QB keeper.

The Cardinals separated with two unanswered touchdowns—a 49-yard run by Galardo and a 37-yard pass from McKee to junior Drew Vonder Haar that made it 40-21.

The two teams traded scores late in the fourth quarter, as Merrell connected with Wobken on a 7-yard strike before Webb City’s Johnson completed a 72-yard TD pass to junior Joseph DeGraffenreid in what was a final exclamation point on the win.

NAMES & NUMBERS

The total offense was nearly identical in this one, as Carl Junction recorded 349 yards (177 rushing and 172 passing), while Webb City had 346 yards (186 rushing and 160 passing).

The Bulldogs, who had 18 first downs to Webb City’s 12, ran 73 offensive plays to the Cardinals’ 32. Carl Junction’s time of possession was 34:28 to Webb City’s 13:32.

“We played better up front this week,” Hafner said. “Last week’s game really helped us prepare our kids for what we were looking for.”

Merrell completed 13 of 23 passes for 172 yards and also ran for 80 yards on 23 carries. Starks finished with 87 rushing yards on 17 carries. Starks was also credited with 10 tackles.

Webb City’s Galardo ran for 94 yards on just eight carries, while Jackson added 48 yards and Johnson had 38.

Johnson completed both of his pass attempts for 82 yards, while McKee was 4 for 7 passing for 78 yards.

Senior linebacker Christian Brock led Webb City’s defense with 10 tackles, while Eggleston and senior linebacker Jordan Howard had nine tackles apiece and senior defensive back Conner Gayman had eight.

McFarland noted his team still has work to do.

“I know our defense got frustrated because CJ was able to hang on to the ball and get first downs,” McFarland said. “They did to us what we wanted to do to Nixa last week…they kept our offense off the field. We’ll watch the film and I’m sure we’ll see some areas we need to get fixed. And I’m sure we’ll get those things fixed moving forward.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Carl Junction (0-2) hosts Neosho (0-2) next Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

Webb City (1-1) travels to Republic (2-0) in Week 3. Of course, the Tigers ended Webb City’s 2022 season in the district semifinals.

“They beat us for the first time in school history to end our season last year,” McFarland said. “They’re proving they’re one of the best teams in the conference. We should be fired up to get work on Monday. I’m excited. It should be a good test for us and it will show us where we’re at as a team.”
