NEOSHO HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Neosho boys rebound from semifinal loss to win 3rd place

NEOSHO, Mo. — Neosho coach Zane Culp laid it out plain and simple for the Wildcats after their disappointing 77-49 loss Thursday against Crooked Oak (Okla.) in the semifinals of the 68th annual Neosho Holiday Classic.

During his postgame interview, Culp said that he told his players they can either lay down or show up at noon on Friday and avenge themselves.

The Wildcats definitely showed up at noon on Friday and they avenged themselves with a 54-41 win over Monett for third place in the Black Division of their home tournament.

Monett led 2-0 and 4-2 early on, but Neosho went on an astonishing 21-0 scoring run on the way to a 23-7 lead after one quarter.

“The guys came out with a lot of energy,” Culp said. “We talked about how we felt we played very below our standards defensively (Thursday). We just talked about every bucket they take better be the hardest bucket they’ve ever taken in their lives. They kind of clung to that and did a good job.”

Senior bench contributor Michael Day scored all eight of his points and fellow senior Isaiah Green added five more during that 21-0 stretch.

The Wildcats made 10 out of 13 shots in the first eight minutes and needless to say, they could not keep that nearly 77 percent shooting clip for the entire game.

Neosho finished 21-45 overall (46.7 percent) from the floor in the contest, a number hurt by a 2-13 performance (15.4 percent) from 3-point range.

The Wildcats owned a 36-16 advantage inside the paint, 22-1 in points off turnovers, 14-0 off the fast break, and 8-0 in bench points.

“A lot of those turnovers, I think maybe one was off a press, the rest were just digging in and playing really good half-court defense,” Culp said. “Kael Smith really set the tone early. He poked away a couple balls, blocked a shot, and dove on the floor. He’s one of our best players. He’s one of our leaders, and to see him set the tone right off the bat like ‘This is what we’re doing today,’ that was really good to see.”

All-tournament selection Green recorded his second double-double of the tournament and he accomplished this one with 15 points and 10 assists to go alongside his 13 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday against Cassville.

Green needed three rebounds Friday for a triple-double and he added three steals and one blocked shot in 32 minutes of play.

Slam dunk competition winner Carter Baslee joined his fellow senior in double-double territory with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Smith finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Brock Franklin and Carter Fenske each scored four points.

Monett cut Neosho’s lead down to 47-41 with 2:27 remaining, but the Wildcats buckled down both defensively and offensively and scored the game’s final seven points.

Blaine Salsman and Jason Garner led Monett with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Neosho improved to 8-2 overall and the Wildcats are back in action Jan. 3 against their Newton County rival East Newton.

“The boys had a mission to win the finals so it’s kind of like a shrugged win,” Culp said, “but you take every win you can get and I’m proud of them for responding today. It could have been really easy after last night and not as big a crowd (Friday) to lay down, but I thought this was probably the hardest they’ve played in a while. To turn around and do that in a noon game makes me really proud of them.”

NEOSHO HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Neosho girls finish runner-up in home tournament

NEOSHO, Mo. — Six made field goals.

Seven made free throws.

A single point in the first quarter and four at halftime, all on free throws.

The first 18 minutes of the game before a made field goal and the final stat line of 19 points and 18 turnovers.

Those are the main numbers that highlight tournament host Neosho’s often grisly struggle Friday during a 51-19 loss against defending girls champion Fort Smith Northside (Ark.) in the championship game of the Neosho Holiday Classic played at Neosho High School.

“We did not come out the way that we wanted to come out tonight,” Neosho coach Daniel Durst said. “I’m not sure what it was, but we just didn’t show up to start with and I got them to start back up after halftime, but we dug ourselves a really big hole and it’s hard to dig yourself out of that.

“That Northside team is really tough. We knew that coming in. They’re a great basketball team. I told the girls in our walk-through this morning that we need to play as hard as we can to put ourselves in a position to win at the end of the game. We stressed that if we were going to win this game it would be a close one until the end. Unfortunately, we didn’t show up ready to do that today.”

Looking on the bright side of the Wildcats’ performance in their home tournament, though, Neosho won games against Van Buren (Ark.) and Memphis Whitehaven (Tenn.), erased an 11-point deficit with the final 15 points in the last three minutes against Van Buren and scored the first nine points in their win against Whitehaven, senior Karlee Ellick and sophomore Beclynn Garrett each received all-tournament recognition, and senior Reagan McInturff repeated as the champion of the 3-point shooting competition.

McInturff also made the go-ahead 3-point basket in the thrilling win Wednesday against Van Buren.

“I think overall tournament play, we played well,” Durst said. “With the exception of tonight, we’re getting better. Every game, we take something away and learn from it, and we’re better the next time. Even from this loss tonight, it’s tough but we’ve learned something, and it will then make us better in the future.”

In the loss Friday, Ellick, Garrett, and her older sister Maelynn Garrett each led Neosho with four points, Meredith Baldwin and Courtney Thomason each added two, and McInturff, Autumn Kinnaird, and Madison Olson each made a free throw to round out the scoring.

Karys Washington scored a game-high 26 points for Northside (10-2) and she also tallied nine rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot, and one steal.

Erianna Gooden added nine points for the Grizzlies, a perennial power in Arkansas Class 6A girls basketball.

Northside outscored Neosho 32-12 in the paint, 23-5 off turnovers, and 20-3 in second-chance points, as well as owning a 37-23 rebounding edge.

Neosho dropped to 7-5 overall and the Wildcats return to action Jan. 9 with their Central Ozark Conference opener on the road against Webb City (6-4).

At this point in the season last year, Neosho was 5-7 overall.

NEOSHO HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Fast start leads Mustangs past Patriots for 7th place

MCDONALD COUNTY BOYS 54, EAST NEWTON 35

NEOSHO, Mo. — The McDonald County Mustangs raced out to a big early lead and never looked back in the Black bracket’s seventh-place game on Friday at Neosho Junior High.

In a game they never trailed, McDonald County led 21-3 by the end of the first quarter.

The Mustangs took their biggest lead, 22 points, at the 6:41 mark of the fourth quarter.

Sterling Woods scored 21 points, handed out six assists and grabbed four steals to lead the Mustangs (6-6), while Josh Pacheco recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Cross Dowd added 10 points for the Mustangs, while Weston Gordon scored seven.

East Newton received 11 points from Marshall Renner and nine apiece from Chase Sorrell and Braxton Wolfe.

Wolfe had 12 rebounds for the Patriots (5-7).

McDonald County scored 20 points off East Newton’s 16 turnovers and the Mustangs outscored the Patriots 34-8 inside the paint.

SAPULPA 55, CASSVILLE 42

Sapulpa used a 12-4 run in the second quarter to pull away in the Black bracket’s fifth-place game on Friday at Neosho High School.

The first, third and fourth quarters were nearly even.

Aidan Cook scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats (7-4).

NEOSHO HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Neosho girls to play for championship; Neosho boys will play for third

NEOSHO, Mo. — The Neosho girls basketball team is back in the championship game of their home tournament for the first time since 2016 after their 58-44 win over Memphis Whitehaven (Tenn.) on Thursday at Neosho Junior High.

Neosho scored the game’s first nine points, Whitehaven never led and it was only a tie game for three seconds total, and Whitehaven could not get better than a nine-point deficit (50-41, 52-43) in the fourth quarter.

Neosho improved to 7-4 overall and the Wildcats draw the formidable Fort Smith Northside Grizzlies, defending tournament champions, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Neosho High School.

“I am very, very pleased,” Neosho coach Daniel Durst said. “We did falter a bit in the third, which is common for us, but I say that we held it together better than normal and that served us well in the fourth quarter. We came back alive and finished it off.”

The Wildcats picked up Thursday right where they left off from Wednesday’s comeback 52-48 win over Van Buren (Ark), when they erased an 11-point deficit with the game’s final 15 points in the final three minutes.

That did roll over for us and the girls are just starting to build more and more confidence as we go,” Durst said. “It’s translating to better and better play and more wins. This (Whitehaven) was a great test for us. I’m super proud of them.”

The Wildcats maintained two advantages that fed into their 14-point win: a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint and a 21-6 advantage in made free throws.

“We actually had a conversation at our walk-through about pounding the ball inside,” Durst said. “I thought we really had an advantage there, and I said let’s get to the free throw line. Score when the clock’s stopped.”

Senior post Karlee Ellick, fellow senior Reagan McInturff, and sophomore guard Beclynn Garrett combined for 49 points Thursday.

Ellick, who proved responsible for the majority of those points in the paint, finished with a game-high 24 points and she had eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.

McInturff added 13 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.

Garrett tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and one assist in 31 minutes.

Ellick, McInturff, and Garrett alone shot a combined 21-24 from the stripe (87.5 percent) with each player missing only a single free throw (Garrett 8-9, McInturff 7-8, Ellick 6-7).

The Wildcats set an early tone by going to the line first only five seconds in and they already had six free throw attempts within the first 48 seconds of the game.

Maelynn Garrett finished with five points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while fellow senior Raine Harris added four points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Jeurnei Wright led Whitehaven (8-2) with 15 points, 14 of which she had as the Tigers outscored Neosho 30-25 in the second half.

In order to earn their first Neosho Holiday Classic title since 2014, the Wildcats will have to go through one of the absolute powerhouse Arkansas girls basketball programs in Fort Smith Northside, who defeated St. Joseph Lafayette 58-32 on Thursday and Stoutland 57-15 on Wednesday in their first two Holiday Classic games.

“Very, very excited,” Durst said. “It’s been since 2016 these girls have done that. We’re pumped and ready to go.

“They’re (Northside) going to be a tough, tough team to beat. We can do it, but we’re going to have to play really hard. I’m hoping that the energy from this game leaks over and gets us started tomorrow like it did today.”

Crooked Oak (Okla.) boys 77, Neosho 49

The host Wildcats will not repeat as Black Division champions, as they endured a rough 28-point semifinal loss on Thursday with the Ruf-Nex from Oklahoma City outscoring Neosho 38-13 in the first and fourth quarters, including 19-5 in the first.

Neosho led for 61 seconds, and the game was tied for 51 seconds.

Crooked Oak led for just over 30 minutes.

Cranking up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, Neosho made it a 49-39 game before Crooked Oak closed out the quarter with 9 of the final 11 points to stretch the lead to 58-41 entering the fourth.

“When you’re down that much and you have to fight that hard to get back, you just run out of gas,” Neosho coach Zane Culp said. “I felt like energy wise, (Carter) Baslee, Isaiah Green, and Brock (Franklin) brought it. They had to play every minute hard, and they ran out of gas.”

Neosho (7-2 overall) will play for third against Monett at noon Friday at Neosho High School.

“That’s what I told them,” Culp said. “You have an option: You can lay down or you can show up tomorrow at noon and avenge yourself. There’s not really any other option.”

Neosho defeated Monett 48-33 back on Dec. 13.

On Thursday, Green finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Carter Fenske had 12 points, Kael Smith 11 points and five rebounds, and Baslee added eight points, four rebounds, and two blocks.

Tymie Adkins-Freeman, Elijah Garcia, and Daevion Hill combined for 66 of Crooked Oak’s 77 points — Adkins-Freeman a game-high 24 points behind 12 made free throws, Hill 22 points along with 13 rebounds and three blocks, and Garcia 20 points sparked by six trifectas.

The Ruf-Nex are ranked fifth in Oklahoma Class 3 by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA).

SPRINGFIELD CATHOLIC GIRLS 47, CARTHAGE 40

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A big second half propelled Springfield Catholic past Carthage 47-40 at the Pink and White Lady Basketball Classic on Wednesday at Kickapoo High School.

Carthage held a 23-17 lead at halftime, but the Irish outscored the Tigers 30-17 in the second half.

“A poor shooting second half doomed us down the stretch tonight,” Carthage coach Scott Moore said. “The kids worked hard, executed the plays and got themselves good looks. The shots just didn’t fall.

“We played great defense during the first half and boxed out the best I’ve seen us do all season,” Moore added. “So there are positives to take out of this loss. We just need to get back to working hard in practice to get us back to where we want to be for 32 minutes of game time execution. Last night, the defense let us down. Tonight, the offense didn’t hold up its end of the court. When we put both phases of the game together for 32 minutes, we will be the team no one wants to play. We have to come back after the new year with that thought in mind. Our best game is still ahead of us. We want to play that way in our next game.”

Lauren Choate led Carthage with 12 points. She hit a trio of 3-pointers. Kianna Yates added nine points and Maggie Boyd had eight.

Peyton Wiseman scored 15 points for Catholic and Katie Galligos added 14.

Carthage (5-4) is at Strafford on Jan. 5.

NEOSHO HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Neosho girls rally big for opening-round win; NHS cruise in opener

NEOSHO, Mo. — With three minutes and 12 seconds remaining in regulation during their Neosho Holiday Classic opener on Wednesday, all signs pointed toward a defeat for the host Neosho Wildcats against the Van Buren Pointers at Neosho Junior High.

Neosho’s Karlee Ellick scores inside for the Wildcats in their matchup with Van Buren on Wednesday in the Neosho Holiday Classic. Photo by Derek Livingston.

Van Buren’s Caylee Barbour heated up from 3-point range late in the third and early in the fourth quarter and her teammate Camryn Schmidt provided the other four points during a 10-2 run in the first 2:45 of the fourth that put the Pointers up 42-35.

Jaci Odom’s two free throws then gave Van Buren a 48-37 lead with 3:12 remaining.

After that, everything changed so dramatically that Neosho scored the game’s final 15 points and came out with a stunning 52-48 win.

The Wildcats’ turnover rate slowed down in the fourth, Reagan McInturff hit the go-ahead 3-point shot with just under a minute remaining, the Wildcats completely took the Pointers out of their offense that final 3:12, and Neosho made seven free throws down the home stretch.

“What we have been harping on them all season to break is this—when it gets tough, we fold up, we lay down and it’s over,” Neosho coach Daniel Durst said. “So, really, we had a timeout with about three minutes left and I just had that conversation with them. This is exactly what we fight against all the time, it’s just laying down and rolling over. Now you’ve got to stand up, you’ve got to sprint hard, and it’s got to be the three hardest minutes of defense you’ve ever played. They responded.”

Neosho led Van Buren 10-9 after one quarter, the teams were tied at 19 at halftime, and Neosho led 33-32 entering the fourth.

Turnovers slowed Neosho down — 21 after three quarters with seven in each quarter, but Neosho committed only three in the fourth.

Van Buren, meanwhile, committed seven in the fourth and finished with 23 turnovers.

“Turnovers killed us,” Durst said, “but I knew it was going to be a sloppy game coming off break because it always is. Luckily, we were able to pull that out.”

Neosho last played Dec. 19 against William Chrisman.

Neosho senior Karlee Ellick finished with a double-double with a game-high 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She already had a double-double at halftime with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the first 16 minutes.

“She gets us going,” Durst said. “When teams pressure her, then we falter a little bit until we can get our bearings again.”

McInturff added 13 points, Beclynn Garrett scored all 11 of her points in the second half and came through with five assists, three rebounds and six steals after being slowed down by foul trouble in the first half, Maelynn Garrett and Avyn Blair each added four points, Raine Harris added two points, and Courtney Thomason rounded out the scoring with one point.

The Wildcats finished 15-25 (60 percent) from the line and owned a nine-point advantage on Van Buren in made free throws.

Van Buren made five more 3-point baskets (8-3) than Neosho.

Ellick’s work on the glass contributed to a 33-23 rebounding advantage for the Wildcats.

Aspen Cone and Schmidt each led Van Buren (7-6) with 11 points and Barbour had nine. Foul trouble in the second half slowed Cone down after she had nine points in the first half.

Neosho improved to 6-4 overall and the Wildcats play Whitehaven (Tenn.) in their next Holiday Classic game at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Neosho Junior High.

Whitehaven defeated St. Joseph Lafayette 58-46 on Wednesday.

NEOSHO BOYS 61, CASSVILLE 43

Cassville led Neosho for all of 49 seconds and the game was tied for 2:15 during their Neosho Holiday Classic Black Division quarterfinal game Wednesday at Neosho High School.

Neosho went on to a 38-16 halftime lead behind a dominant 25-10 second quarter.

Cassville finished the contest with 20 turnovers, which led directly to 23 Neosho points and a 17-2 edge in fast break points for the host Wildcats.

“Defense is what we pride ourselves on,” Neosho coach Zane Culp said. “It’s not necessarily a press or anything special, it’s just about making them take tough shots. We started slow offensively … we got a groove going. They play a good 1-3-1 matchup zone, but once we got the feeling of it, we were in a good spot.”

Isaiah Green led Neosho with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds and finished with six assists. Carter Baslee had 11 points and seven rebounds, Carter Fenske added 10 points, Michael Day contributed eight points off the bench, and Kael Smith and Jared Siler each added five, Collier Hendricks four, Brodie Arthur three, and Brock Franklin two points.

Aidan Cook finished with 12 points to lead Cassville.

Neosho, now 7-1 overall, plays the Crooked Oak (Okla.) Ruf-Nex in a semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Neosho High School.

The Ruf-Nex roughed up East Newton 79-52 in their Holiday Classic opener Wednesday.

HUNTSVILLE (ARK.) BOYS 67, MCDONALD COUNTY 57

The Huntsville Eagles erased a 35-27 halftime deficit and earned a 10-point victory Wednesday over the McDonald County Mustangs with a 40-22 second half, including a 20-9 fourth quarter.

Huntsville took control for good of the contest with eight unanswered points in 83 seconds of the fourth quarter, turning a 53-51 deficit into a 59-53 lead with 3:11 remaining in regulation.

Huntsville’s guard tandem of Mason Davidson and Troy Lambert proved too much for the Mustangs, especially in the second half, and they finished with a combined 46 points (Davidson 24, Lambert 22).

McDonald County’s Cross Dowd scored a game-high 25 points.

“I thought we came out in the first half and had a decent amount of energy,” McDonald County coach Brandon Joines said. “We executed pretty well. Second half, they had more of the energy, and they had the little extra spark to get going and we struggled to score the ball. We got a little hesitant with our movement and bad things started to happen.

“Then, on the other end of the floor, defensively, we let two guys (Davidson, Lambert) who are solid scorers, and they can shoot the ball … we let them shoot for free.”

McDonald County dropped to 5-5 on the season overall and the Mustangs face Sapulpa (Okla.) in a Black Division consolation semifinal at 10 a.m. Thursday at Neosho Junior High.

Sapulpa took a 51-50 loss Wednesday against Monett.

HOOPS ROUNDUP: Carthage girls, boys drop tourney openers; McAuley boys suffer close setback

GLENDALE GIRLS 78, CARTHAGE 49

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Glendale used a strong second quarter to build a cushion and pulled away from Carthage in the opening round of the Pink and White Lady Basketball Classic at the O’Reilly Family Event Center on the campus of Drury University.

The Falcons took a three-point lead into the second period and outscored the Tigers 24-16 in the second period to hold an 11-point advantage at the intermission. Glendale pushed the lead to 19 to start the fourth before cruising down the stretch.

Glendale came out firing today and had their best offensive game of the year,” Carthage coach Scott Moore said to SoMo Sports. “Their size created a lot of problems for us on both sides of the floor. They start four girls 5-foot-11-inches or taller and we don’t have any one that tall in our program.”

“I was pleased with our offense in the first half, but defensively we can’t afford to give up 41 points in a half to anyone we play. We haven’t played our best game of the year yet. We need to get into a groove offensively that lasts for 32 minutes. When we do that, coupled with our usual stifling defense, then we will have played our best game. That’s what we are striving for right now.”

Reilly Heman led Glendale (8-1) with 23 points, while Madelyn Zingg added 20 to lead Glendale in scoring. Avery Givens had 16 points in the win.

Kianna Yates led the Tigers with 16 points, while Maggie Boyd added 12 points to give Carthage two players with double figures. Lauren Choate added nine points in the loss.

Carthage (5-3) plays Springfield Catholic at 5 p.m. at Kickapoo High School in the second round on Wednesday.

TRUMAN BOYS 56, CARTHAGE 52

ROLLA, Mo. — Truman edged Carthage 56-52 on Tuesday in the opening round of the US Bank Holiday Tournament at Missouri S&T.

Truman led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and 32-26 at the half. Carthage trailed 46-41 entering the fourth quarter.

The Tigers won the fourth quarter 11-10, but it wasn’t enough.

Justin Ray led the Tigers with 15 points and Max Templeman scored 13. Britt Coy and Clay Kinder contributed nine points apiece.

Carthage (3-5) will return to tourney action at 4 on Wednesday against either Waynesville or St. Pius in the consolation semifinals.

WHEATON BOYS 41, MCAULEY CATHOLIC 40

WASHBURN, Mo. — McAuley’s rally came up just short as Wheaton earned an opening-round win in the Southwest Holiday Tournament on Tuesday.

The Warriors trailed by nine points heading into the final eight minutes of play and outscored Wheaton 17-7 in the final quarter to come up one point shy.

Michael Parrigon led the Warrior with 17 points, while Rocco Bazzano-Joseph added seven. Jack Jones scored six and Connor Taffner finished with five.

Blake Morgan scored 20 points for Wheaton.

McAuley (4-7) plays Southwest at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

HOOPS: 22 teams prepare for Neosho Holiday Classic

The 68th annual Neosho Holiday Classic begins Wednesday, Dec. 28, and lasts through Friday, Dec. 30 with 16 boys teams in two divisions (Black, Gold) and six girls teams.

On the boys side, tournament host Neosho will look to defend its Black Division title and the Wildcats open against their fellow Wildcats in Cassville for the second year in a row.

The other three Black Division quarterfinal games are Sapulpa (Okla.) and Monett, Huntsville (Ark.) and McDonald County, and East Newton and Crooked Oak (Okla).

Neosho defeated archrival McDonald County 70-63 for the championship last season, earning the Wildcats their first Holiday Classic title since 2002.

The Gold Division quarterfinal games are Atascocita (Texas) against St. Joseph Lafayette, Van Buren (Ark.) against Morrilton (Ark.), Bentonville (Ark.) against Maumelle (Ark.), and Cypress Falls (Texas) against Memphis Mitchell (Tenn).

Texas schools Atascocita and Cypress Falls both make return appearances in the Holiday Classic after making significant waves several years ago.

Atascocita, driven by sharpshooting guard Carsen Edwards and the explosive 6-foot-8 big man Fabian White, dominated the Holiday Classic and took over Neosho for four days back in 2015. The Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time of their appearance in Neosho.

Edwards and White both enjoyed outstanding collegiate careers — Edwards twice earned All-American honors at Purdue and White started more than 100 career games for Houston.

Edwards now plays professionally in Turkey after his NBA career did not pan out, while White plays for the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League.

Meanwhile, Cypress Falls entered the 2017 Holiday Classic nationally ranked and placed third in a tournament won by North Little Rock, who featured future Arkansas Razorback star and current Golden State Warrior shooting guard Moses Moody.

Other notable players from the Holiday Classic past include current and former NBA players Malik Monk, Buddy Hield, Hasheem Thabeet, and the twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison, as well as former NFL quarterback Josh Freeman.

Maumelle defeated fellow Arkansas school Mills 84-73 for the Gold Division title last season.

On the girls side, defending champion Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside, Stoutland, Neosho, Van Buren (Ark.), St. Joseph Lafayette, and Whitehaven (Tenn.) make up the field.

Neosho, the only local team on the girls side, plays Van Buren on Wednesday and Whitehaven on Thursday.

Van Buren won three straight Holiday Classic titles from 2015 to 2017.

Former Tennessee and WNBA player Shekinna Stricklen propelled the Morrilton Devil Dogs to three straight girls titles from 2003 through 2005, and she became the most notable girls player from the Holiday Classic.

BOYS HOOPS: Carthage suffers close loss at 12 Courts of Christmas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Carthage suffered a 47-45 setback to Van Buren (Arkansas) on Wednesday at the 12 Courts of Christmas boys basketball tournament at Hy-Vee Arena.

The Tigers fell to 3-4 on the season.

The game was tied at 18 at the end of the first quarter.

Carthage took a 28-26 lead into halftime, and the Tigers held a 37-34 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

The Tigers were clinging to a 39-36 lead with just under six minutes to play, but Van Buren finished the game on an 11-6 run.

The Pointers scored the go-ahead hoop with 1.8 seconds left.

Clay Kinder and Max Templeman scored 10 points apiece to lead the Tigers, while Justin Ray added nine points. Britt Coy and Trent Yates contributed eight points apiece.

Conner Myers scored 15 points to lead the Pointers, while Jaxon Cazzell added 14.

The Tigers were originally scheduled to play Fort Osage at the event on Thursday, but that contest was canceled due to the weather forecast.

Carthage will compete at the US Bank Holiday Tournament in Rolla from Dec. 27-29.

Notes: In other games on Wednesday at the tourney, Golden City’s boys suffered a 47-42 loss to Albany and Golden City’s girls beat Albany 50-19.

BOYS HOOPS: Nevada earns win over Harrisonville

NEVADA, Mo. — Nevada’s boys basketball team earned a 54-41 victory over Harrisonville on Tuesday night.

Winners of two straight, Nevada improved to 3-7.

The Tigers were clinging to a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but the hosts outscored the Wildcats 14-6 in the second period.

Nevada led 38-30 entering the fourth quarter. The Tigers outscored the visitors 16-11 in the last eight minutes for the final margin.

Senior forward Drew Beachler scored 20 points to lead Nevada, while senior guard Cade Beshore added 12 and sophomore Jack Cheaney had eight.

Mason Mitchell scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats (3-6), while Mason Worthley had 12.

Nevada returns to action on Jan. 3 with a road date at Clinton.

GIRLS HOOPS: Webb City wins second straight to end ’22

SENECA, Mo. — With a second double-digit win in as many nights, the Webb City girls basketball team definitely ended the 2022 portion of the schedule on a positive note.

Webb City rode a strong first quarter and a solid overall effort to a 60-44 victory over Seneca on Tuesday night in the ’22 finale.

The win comes one night after the Cardinals pounded Pittsburg (Kansas) 77-29.

Webb City’s Kate Brownfield puts up a shot from in close against Seneca’s Parker Long on Tuesday night. Photo by Derek Livingston.

“This is a positive way to end the first part of the season,” Webb City coach Lance Robbins said. “There’s a lot of good things we saw the last two nights that we can build on. These two wins give us some momentum going into the second half. We’ll use the next week and a half to work on some things and to try to get better. Hopefully we can use this win as a springboard going into the second half of the season.”

Hot-shooting Webb City used a 19-3 run in the first quarter to take control of the non-conference clash, and the Cardinals withstood Seneca’s mini-surge in the second half.

“I thought we had a good, solid performance all the way around,” Robbins said.

The Cardinals shot the ball well from the perimeter in the early going.

Webb City made five 3-pointers in the opening frame, with Kirra Long, Mia Robbins and Sami Mancini each knocking down one trey and Kate Brownfield hitting two of her own.

“I thought we shot the ball really well last night and I think our confidence grew from that,” Coach Robbins said. “We made our first couple of shots tonight and I think we fed off of that. But it all starts with our defense. Our defense leads us, and it helps us get good looks on the offensive end.”

Seneca sophomore guard Hazley Grotjohn kept her team within striking distance by scoring 10 first-quarter points. Webb City’s lead was 21-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals continued to knock down shots from beyond the arc in the second period, as Mancini, Izzy Lopez and Long all buried 3-pointers.

Those treys and a free throw from Malorie Stanley gave Webb City a comfortable 31-16 halftime advantage.

Grotjohn scored all but two of her team’s points in the first half.

The Cardinals faced some adversity in the third quarter.

The 6-foot-5 Mancini picked up her third, fourth and fifth fouls in just over a minute, with the disqualifying fifth foul coming at the 3:13 mark of the third quarter on what appeared to be a clean blocked shot.

“It was my fault that Sami got her fifth foul,” Coach Robbins said. “I didn’t get her out quick enough when she got her fourth. But we played three games without her at the Mac County tournament, so our girls know how to play without her on the floor.”

Seneca used a 10-4 run to cut what was once a 17-point deficit down to eight.

But late hoops from Long and Brownfield and a 3-pointer from Mia Robbins extended Webb City’s lead to 47-34 at the end of the third period.

Webb City’s lead was never in jeopardy in the fourth quarter, as it remained in double figures the rest of the way.

“We had several kids step up and hit big shots,” Coach Robbins said. “I thought Kirra Long came ready to play today and she hit some big shots. Mia hit a couple of big shots and Kate gave us another solid performance.”

Three players reached double figures for Webb City, as Brownfield and Long scored 17 points apiece and Mancini had 14 points and 20 rebounds.

A sophomore, Long made a trio of 3-pointers. A senior, Brownfield also had eight rebounds. A junior, Mia Robbins added eight points. Mia Robbins, Mancini and Brownfield all hit two 3-pointers apiece.

Grotjohn scored a game-high 29 points. She hit four treys and grabbed nine rebounds for the Indians, who fell to 2-5 on the season. Senior Parker Long contributed seven points for Seneca.

Webb City heads into the Christmas break with a 6-4 record.

After the break, Webb City is at Nevada on Jan. 3. Seneca hosts Clever on Jan. 2.

GIRLS HOOPS: Chillicothe stings Joplin with blowout victory

The visiting Chillicothe Hornets scored the game’s first 13 points and never looked back during their stinging 72-32 win Tuesday over the Joplin Eagles at Kaminsky Gymnasium.

Chillicothe, receiving votes in Class 4 in the preseason rankings from the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, led 53-10 at halftime behind a 26-8 first period and then a lopsided 27-2 second quarter in which Joplin made no field goals and only two free throws.

Joplin trailed by 48 points entering the fourth quarter before outscoring Chillicothe 16-8 over the final eight minutes.

“It’s the simple fact of being able to handle pressure,” Joplin coach Brad Cox said. “That was a really good team we played today. We know that we need to get better at our skill, and we need to get better at taking care of the ball. At the end of the day, that’s what beat us tonight. We did a lot of good things in the second half, and we came back and made it more respectable, but at the same time, we’re just behind on skill. The girls are working extremely hard to get better and to build a foundation here at Joplin.”

Chillicothe senior Jessica Reeter scored 20 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, while teammates Kayanna Cranmer and Cali Burkhardt scored all their 11 and nine points, respectively, during that first-half domination of the home team.

The Hornets scored 19 points in the second half, but the damage had already been done.

Sophomore guard Olivia Munn led Joplin with seven points and Isabella Yust, Alissa Owens and Bailey Ledford each chipped in six points for the Eagles.

Ledford scored Joplin’s first two points at 3:56 of the first quarter with a pair of free throws and her junior classmate Bailey Owens made Joplin’s first field goal at 2:30 of the first.

By that point, Chillicothe already led 20-4.

Joplin dropped to 2-8 on the season and the Eagles are slated to close out their 2022 portion of the schedule Thursday at home against Springfield Central.

HOOPS ROUNDUP: Neosho boys pull away from Aurora; McAuley boys fall to Galena; Nevada girls improve to 8-2

NEOSHO BOYS 85, AURORA 57

AURORA, Mo. — Neosho separated from Aurora in the second quarter and pulled away down the stretch to earn the win on Monday.

With the game tied at 8s going into the second period, the Wildcats (6-1) outscored the Houn Dawgs (0-8) to the tune of a 28-9 to take a 36-17 advantage into the intermission. Leading by 21 entering the fourth, Neosho put the game away down the stretch thanks to 23 fourth-quarter points—the third straight quarter of 20 or more.

Isaiah Green and Carter Baslee each finished with a double-double, as Green closed with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Baslee with 20 points and 10 boards. Kael Smith added 12 points to give the Wildcats three players in double figures. Jared Siler added seven points and Carter Fenske finished with six.

Neosho is in action next as the hosts of the annual Neosho Holiday Classic basketball tournament from Dec. 28-30.

GALENA BOYS 55, MCAULEY CATHOLIC 16

GALENA, Kan. — The McAuley Catholic boys dropped a non-conference clash at Galena on Monday night, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 55-16 win over the Warriors.

Up 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, Galena outscored McAuley 20-2 in the second period to take a comfortable 32-9 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs were up 47-14 at the end of the third quarter.

McAuley fell to 4-6 overall.

Rocco Bazzano-Joseph scored eight points to lead the Warriors.

Trey Martinez added four points, while Noah Black and Dylan Taffner each scored two.

Tyler Little scored 15 points to lead Galena, while Jack Perry and Malachi Wesley added 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs (5-0).

The Warriors play Wheaton on Dec. 27 at the Southwest Holiday Tournament.

NEVADA GIRLS 56, PLEASANT HILL 29

PLEASANT HILL, Mo. — Nevada’s girls basketball team improved to 8-2 on the season with Monday’s lopsided road win over the Chicks.

It was the team’s sixth straight victory.

Nevada led 26-16 at intermission. The Tigers outscored the hosts 30-13 in the second half.

Clara Swearingen scored 19 points for the Tigers, while Maddy Majors added 14 and Abbey Heathman had 11.

Nevada plays St. Michael the Archangel on Dec. 30 at the 12 Courts of Christmas tourney in Kansas City.

GIRLS HOOPS: College Heights comes up big late in close one with Pierce City

The College Heights Christian Cougars pulled out a 50-46 win on Monday night against the visiting Pierce City Eagles at the College Heights Athletic Complex.

College Heights’ Jayli Johnson drives to the hoop for a score in the Cougars’ win over Pierce City. Photo by Derek Livingston.

Until College Heights took a six-point lead at 50-44 on a pair of Libby Fanning free throws with 1 minute and 12 seconds remaining in regulation, each team led by as many five points, 30-25 for Pierce City in the third and 42-37 for College Heights in the fourth quarter.

Otherwise, it seemed like the teams were separated by a basket only all game.

Down the stretch, College Heights made the plays on both ends and the shots to win the game, while Pierce City had three possessions end up empty on turnovers.

“It was close throughout,” College Heights coach John Blankenship said. “We were up by two at halftime (23-21) and up by one at the end of the third quarter (36-35). We didn’t play extremely well throughout the game. We had spurts where we did really well. We had a couple defensive breakdowns that’s not typical for us, lost some of our offensive execution.

“Libby Fanning had a big game tonight, another double-double, and Jayli Johnson stepped up and played well. We had some key rebounds at crucial points in the game. Maddy Colin got a great rebound and made a good pass to Libby, and she finished. That gave us a couple-point spread (42-37) that really helped us out.”

Fanning and Johnson combined for 80 percent of College Heights’ 50 points, as Fanning scored a game-high 24 points and Johnson frequently weaved and worked her way to the basket to generate 16 more points.

“They’re both capable of doing that every night,” Blankenship said. “We’ve got some more kids that can step up and help us out with more scoring as well. When we’re all five on the court playing well together, our scoring is usually pretty balanced. Libby and Jayli, though, are our two go-to people.”

Addie Lawrence hit a 3-point shot near the end of the third quarter that broke a 33-all score and helped the Cougars take a one-point lead into the fourth.

Fellow senior Lauren Ukena had a steal and score early in the fourth to put College Heights ahead 38-35.

Lawrence and Colin each finished with three points and Ava Lett and Ukena each had two.

In a game that saw four players combine for 72 of the 96 total points scored (75 percent of the scoring), Pierce City seniors Madi Tindell and Olivia Stanphill combined for 32 with Tindell at 17 and Stanphill 15 points.

Pierce City led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, last led 33-31 in the third, and earned a 44-all score on a Tindell basket in the fourth.

College Heights closed out the 2022 portion of the schedule with a 5-4 overall record and the Cougars return to action Jan. 3 on the road against Bronaugh.

“We’ve got some things we need to work on,” Blankenship said. “Our outside shooting is suffering a little bit right now, but we’re really close. Our shots are not far off. We start knocking down some of those outside shots, it’s going to open up things in the middle for Libby. If we can get our inside-outside game going, we’ll be tough to stop. Our guards are improving, they’re working on it, and I think we’re close to getting there.”

College Heights avoided a three-game losing streak and a losing record with Monday’s win.
