PREP GOLF: Joplin takes second at districts, qualify five golfers for state tournament

Joplin hosted the Class 5 District 3 golf tournament on Monday and despite battling inclement weather, the Eagles had a memorable showing in a field of 15 teams and 74 golfers at Schifferdecker Golf Course.

Joplin took second place overall with a team score of 310, with all five golfers qualifying for the Class 5 state tournament that takes place on May 17 and 18 at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia, Missouri.

“They were fighting and battling,” Joplin coach Jack Pace said. “Rain came down most of the first nine, then the rain quit and the wind picked up. … They were phenomenal and always do what needs to be done. They are an impressive group to watch.”

Not only were Joplin’s scores good enough to qualify, each of them finished in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.

“It’s awesome that we were all able to qualify,” Joplin senior Ethan Sage said. “It’s really great. I believe we will make a run at it at state, so I am really looking forward to it.”

Senior Fielding Campbell led the way for the Eagles, earning a fourth-place finish with a four-over-par 75. Sophomore Hobbs Campbell finished with a six-over 77 to finish in a tie for sixth place. Freshman Harry Satterlee finished in eighth place with a seven-over 78, while Sage and junior Wyatt Satterlee closed their rounds shooting a nine-over 80 to finish in a tie for 10th.

“I was not expecting the rain this morning … and I didn’t prepare for it very well,” Joplin’s Fielding Campbell said about his round. “I got off to a rough start, but I was able to figure it out and rebound to finish with a good round.”

Also qualifying for the state tournament was Carthage senior Grant Riley, who finished in a tie for 15th place after shooting a 10-over-par 81.

“I am really proud of Grant for battling his way back into form this season,” Carthage coach Jamie Newman said. “He represents Carthage and what it means to be a Tiger with who he is as a young man. Today, he struck the ball and his short game is where it has been the past few weeks—great. Missing last year took an opportunity from him. I’m happy he was able to cash in his opportunity today.”

Helias Catholic took first in the team standings with a 309, while Archer Schnieders’ one-over 72 was good enough for a first-overall finish on the individual leaderboard. Smith-Cotton’s Keaton Mateja finished in a tie for second with a 74 with Lee’s Summit West’s Justin Andrews. Helias Catholic’s Davis Linhardt placed fifth with a 76, with LSW’s Josh Lumby tying for sixth with a 77 and Isaac McCullough taking ninth with a 79.

Also finishing in a tie for 10th after shooting an 80 were Nixa’s Johnathan Miller and Chandler Burch and HC’s Burke Bauer.

Shooting 81 and tying for 15th place were Ozark’s Carter Jackson and Boston Huddleston, HC’s Jay Higgins, LSW’s Jack Dorrian and Raymore-Peculiar’s Chase Martel.

Rounding out local scoring, Carthage’s Britt oy shot an 82, while Owen Derryberry finished with an 86. Tyler Philips shot an 89, with Quinn Brewer shooting a 94 for the Tigers.

OF NOTE: Joplin’s Harry Satterlee came off the course initially with a score of 76. He was informed by an opposing golfer in his group while they were signing scorecards that he committed a (two-stroke) penalty for holding the flagstick out of the pin and finishing his tap-in putt one handed. Satterlee sought confirmation and was told by the opposing golfer’s coach he indeed committed a penalty, which resulted in Satterlee giving himself the penalty. It was later discovered that Satterlee had not broken said rule because it was changed two years ago and he should not have been assessed a penalty. However, because he had already signed his scorecard with a round of 78, that score was finalized. SoMo Sports felt obligated to make note of this because without the two-stroke penalty that should not have occurred, Joplin would have finished in first place in team scores.

Withers led with three RBIs, Vargas had two hits and a stolen base, Young led the team with two stolen bases and Amos picked up her 10thwin of the season pitching 5.1 innings of relief striking out three.

In the second game Missouri Western jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Lions shut them out the rest of the way, as Bailey Lacy allowed just one baserunner in the final three innings, while striking out four Griffons.

Pitch hitting in the fourth inning Izzy Medrano picked up an RBI on a groundout to get the Lions on the board. And in the bottom of the seventh inning Vargas was the first to reach on base before stealing second, her 31st steal of the season. Following a Leonhart liner that almost got past the first basemen, Josie Tofpi was walked on four straight balls. Withers took the second pitch she saw in the at bat and ripped one to the top of the right field fence that stayed in to score Vargas and Tofpi to walk-off the game and advance to the semi-final round of the MIAA Tournament held in Edmond, Okla.

Withers led with her walk-off two RBIs, Medrano collected the other RBI, Amos went 2-of-3, Vargas is now tied with Abi Corbett’s 2016 tally for the fifth most steals in a single-season at Missouri Southern. Lacy struck out seven in a complete game to earn her 10th win of the season.

The Lions await the winner of the Central Missouri and Washburn series after both teams picked up wins tonight. In Edmond the Lions will be playing Thursday May 13 at 5 p.m.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: MSSU’S Zach Parish sets D-II strikeout record

Missouri Southern senior lefty Zach Parish became the NCAA Division II all-time strikeout king as the Lions split a double-header with Rogers State on Saturday. The Lions won the opener 12-6, but dropping the nightcap 7-2 at Warren Turner Field.

Parish struck out eight in five innings, moving his all-time strikeout total to 479 and setting a new Division II record in the process.

Parish breaks the previous record that was set by Danny Lampley of Wingate from 1995-98. Parish also set his record in 23 fewer innings than Lampley did.

Parish allowed one unearned run and scattered three hits in moving to 10-1 on the season.

The Lions (28-11, 21-11 MIAA) scored 11 runs in the first inning, nearly batting around twice and held on for the win. Henry Kusiak drove in five runs, while Troy Gagan went 3-for-3 in the game. Brad Willis and Jordan Fitzpatrick had a pair of RBIs, while Clay Milas, Tommy Stevenson, Dexter Swims and Troy Gagan had an RBI each. Gagan scored three runs, while Fitzpatrick, Stevenson and Kusiak had two runs each.

Cale McCallister, Corey Cowan and Jeremiah Kennedy threw in relief.

Fitzpatrick led off the first with a homer, and the Lions loaded the bases behind him with Kusiak driving in two and Swims another to make the score 4-0. An RBI double from Willis drove in two, while Fitzpatrick added another RBI to push the score to 7-0. A double from Gagan scored Fitzpatrick before Kusiak capped the inning with a three-run bomb to left field.

RSU (18-19, 14-18 MIAA) added four runs before the Lions got a sacrifice fly from Milas in the seventh to make the score 12-4. The Hillcats added two more in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Game two saw the game tied at two apiece before RSU scored five runs in the eighth to seal the win.

After the Hillcats led 2-0 going to the bottom of the second, Willis drove in Kinder to cut the lead in half. Fitzpatrick added an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game, but the five-run 8th for the Hillcats proved to be too much.

Will Bausinger started and went one and two thirds of an inning. Ryan Paschal threw six innings of one-hit ball, but took the hard-luck loss to move to 1-1 on the season. Scott Duensing, Cole Woods and Elijah Richeson threw in relief.

Fitzpatrick and Willis had an RBI, while Willis had a pair of hits.

The two teams will matchup in the regular-season finale tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm. It will be Senior Day at Warren Turner Field where the Lions will honor their seven seniors on the roster.
