The McAuley Catholic Warriors earned their 13th win of the season in commanding, straight-set fashion (25-16, 25-14, 25-12) on Thursday against the visiting Purdy Eagles.

McAuley took care of business and did not allow a one-win Purdy team to hang around to build any confidence.

Purdy led 2-1 in the first set and that proved to be the Eagles’ only lead all match. Additionally, there were only three tie scores with two of them happening in the first set.

“I was very proud of the girls,” McAuley coach Sarah Nangle said. “We took a mental health day (Wednesday) and didn’t have practice. We did a lot of team bonding stuff. We went and had ice cream, and I think tonight you could really see that we gelled more as a team than we have all season. We have changed our motto. We’re more focused on our faith, being a family, and being more consistent.

“I think the girls did a good job the entire three sets of staying up, running different plays that we’ve been working on at practice, and being aggressive.”

Senior setter and outside hitter Lily Black finished with six kills and five assists, senior libero JoJo Wheeler finished with 12 digs and committed no passing errors in the contest, junior setter and outside hitter Kloee Williamson added four kills, three assists and five aces, and sophomore Jadyn LaFerla came through with three blocks and four more aces.

The Warriors fared well Thursday with their service game.

“We have been a very strong serving team,” Nangle said. “We are good at placing the ball. We have worked on it every practice, and I’ve got some really good servers that are very aggressive. Then, I’ve got some servers that can put the ball where I want them to put it, and we’re very successful at that. Our defense backs it up if it comes on our side.”

McAuley takes a 13-8-2 overall record into the Patriot Challenge this weekend hosted by Providence Academy in Rogers, Ark.

The Warriors then have Ozark 7 Conference matches on the road on Tuesday against Wheaton and on Thursday against Verona.

VOLLEYBALL: Webb City sweeps Carl Junction in conference opener

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Webb City volleyball earned its first Central Ozark Conference victory, which was also a district win, in its conference opener with a 3-0 sweep over short-handed Carl Junction on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (11-2-1, 1-0 COC) opened with a 25-19 win in the first set before holding off the Bulldogs 25-22 in the second set for a 2-0 lead. Webb City built an early lead in the third set and never looked back on the way to a 25-12 sweep-clinching win.

“In the first and third set, I was pretty happy with (our play),” Webb City coach Rhonda Lawrence said. “In the second set, we started making some mental errors, so we have to lock in on that. (Carl Junction) showed us some of our weaknesses that we are going to have to work on a little bit harder. (The Bulldogs) are playing without Logan Jones right now and that makes a huge difference to their whole team and I hate that for her, but I am just glad to get our first conference win under our belt. We just have to continue to get better each game.”

Carl Junction—playing without senior setter Lo Jones, an Arkansas commit, who is healing from an injury—falls to 5-5-1, 0-1 COC on the season.

“We are obviously a different team without Logan, but I thought we did some of the right things to get ourselves in a position to get the right swings,” Carl Junction coach Cheryl Sharples said. “I thought we passed fairly solid and were in the spots to dig some of their hitters. Their setter did a good job of getting their hitters one one one, which made us struggle a little bit.”

GAME ACTION

The middle hitters made an early impact for Webb City in the first game, setting the tone at the net for nearly the entire match. The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-3 fueled by a kill from Aubree Lassiser to go along with a kill and a block from Jaeli Rutledge, with Brenda Lawrence and Kate Brownfield also contributing kills.

“Whenever they are slowing down a ball or we can feed the middle and get more production out of them, that helps to open up our outsides, too,” Coach Lawrence said. “It was nice to be able to lean on them a little bit tonight. We haven’t had to do that yet, so it was a great experience for them.”

Webb City pushed the lead to 11-5 before a sideout and back to back kills from Carl Junction’s Kylie Scott to time the margin to three. A kill from Lassiter pushed the lead to 14-10 before a three-point service run by Lassiter, with Lassiter and Rutledge each earning a kill, after a pair of sideouts made the score 18-11—more than enough cushion on the way to the first-set win.

“We struggled in serve receive early in sets,” Sharples said. “We just had to dig and fight our way back into the match. That kind of took a little bit out of us.”

Webb City used an early four-point service run in the second set by Brenda Lawrence to build the advantage but to Carl Junction’s credit, each team the Cardinals looked as if they would pull away, the Bulldogs rallied.

After a block from Rutledge put WCHS in front 14-8, Carl Junction scored six of the next eight points, including two kills from Karissa Chase and an ace from Scott, to cut the deficit to 16-14. Webb City answered with the next four points, including an ace from Brownfield, to go up 20-14. Once again the Bulldogs rallied with a sideout kill from Destiny Buerge before Buerge scored five straight points in service to tie the game at 20-20. Scott had two kills, while Adia Kennedy had a block.

“I was proud of them in that second set,” Sharples said. “I thought they were fighting and competing at that point in time. Even late in the first set, I feel like we kind of started that mentality. That’s what I kept telling them, ‘Just get better each point and don’t worry about the score.’ I thought we focused well on that in the second set. In the third set, I thought we focused a little too much on the score.”

The Cardinals used a sideout followed by kills from Kyah Sanborn and Lassiter to go up three before a pair of WCHS errors cut the margin back to one. Webb City finished off the second set with a kill from Lassiter and a kill from Rutledge.

“I think that shows that we have kind of been there before,” Coach Lawrence said. “To have so many returners back on the floor, it helps us not get rattled. We’ve really challenged ourselves on the mental side of the game. Other teams are going to go on runs, we just have to stick to what we do well. … I think we have done a good job of doing that.”

After a 2-1 start to the third set, Webb City took all the momentum after scoring eight of the following nine points to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Brownfield had two kills to go along with a kill from Rutledge.

Following three consecutive sideouts made up of a kill by Chase, then Brownfield before a kill from Buerge, CJ committed four straight errors before a kill from Lassiter pushed the lead to 16-4. The Cardinals made it 20-6 on a kill from Lassiter and an ace from Brenda Lawrence before a kill from Brownfield and an error on CJ made the score 22-7. Both teams traded blows from there before Webb City put the sweep away with a kill from Lawrence.

“Kate is super athletic and that makes her job a little easier,” Coach Lawrence said of Brownfield’s ability to take over offensively in the third set. “She sees the floor really well, which helps her find great holes (in the defense). … The more confident she grew with the things that were working, it made everyone want to feed her the ball more, too.”

STATS

Lassiter had 12 kills, 10 digs and a block, while Brownfield finished with 10 kills and seven digs. Rutledge had seven kills and two blocks, while Sanborn had 31 assists and 11 digs. Sophia Crane had 10 digs, with Brenda Lawrence adding five kills and two aces and five digs.

Scott had 13 kills for Carl Junction, while Miya Carnes had 26 assists. Buerge finished with eight kills.

UP NEXT

Both teams take part in the Carl Junction Classic on Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Neosho rallies late, wins in 8 innings for 9th straight win

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Neosho Wildcats started out hot with solo home runs from two of their first three hitters, cooled down at the plate with four scoreless innings in a row and fell behind 5-2, and warmed back up with two runs in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and five big ones in the eighth to earn an 11-6 extra-innings victory Tuesday in Central Ozark Conference play against rival Webb City.

Freshman pitcher Olivia Emery earned the win in long relief of sophomore starter Carleigh Kinnaird, freshman Autumn Kinnaird and sophomore Beclynn Garrett hit the early home runs, and seniors Abbie Carpenter and McKaylie Forrest each delivered two-run doubles in the decisive top of the eighth.

Webb City took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the third, all of them scored with two outs as the Cardinals loaded the bases and took advantage of a pair of Neosho defensive miscues.

“We had the two home runs to start the game and get us on the board, then we just didn’t play very clean defense behind Carleigh,” Neosho coach Catie Cummins said. “That’s very frustrating for her. I know that, and I’m frustrated for her because I thought she threw well. We just weren’t playing defense behind her. Fortunately, we were able to find the bats late in the game and took care of business.

“Olivia came in and did a great job, but I want to give a shout-out for Carleigh because it’s a hard place to be, to feel like you’ve let down your team and go out to right field. She cheered on her teammates the whole time and she did well at the plate. She deserves that kudos, and it’s a whole team win.

“We sub in courtesy runners and pinch runners, and Trinity Drake comes in off the bench with a big hit to get us going (in the sixth). That’s a hard spot to be in, too, because you’re sitting hoping your name’s going to be called and then it is, and you’ve got to go out there and hit the ball. She did, and I’m super proud of her. I know the statline is going to say that she has a single and that’s it, but that got us back in the game headed into the seventh.”

The Cardinals were two outs away from a 6-5 loss when freshman third baseman Kylee Sargent hit a solo home run to center to force extra innings.

That proved to be the only run Webb City scored against Emery, who came in to earn the final out in Webb City’s four-run third and kept the Cardinals within reach for Neosho’s potent bats.

In the Neosho eighth, Bailey Bowers and Amber Kinnaird worked walks and Garrett reached on a fielder’s choice that forced out Kinnaird at second, and then came the big hits.

Carpenter hit the game-tying double to left in the seventh and she hit a very similar ball to almost the same exact spot, scoring Bowers and Garrett with a double.

Two batters later, Forrest hit her two-run double scoring Carpenter and Carleigh Kinnaird, then Emery made it a five-run lead for the Wildcats on an RBI double.

Neosho retired Webb City in order in the bottom of the eighth with shortstop Garrett ending it on a sensational diving catch barely into the outfield grass.

Emery and Carleigh Kinnaird combined to strike out 12 Cardinals in the contest balanced against just one walk, and the Wildcats made the defensive plays (including a pair of Webb City runners thrown out by Forrest late in the game, one at second and one at first) and delivered plenty of big hits to improve to 15-3 overall and 3-1 COC with a nine-game winning streak headed into Wednesday’s non-conference game on the road against Monett.

“We’ve got to take care of business at Monett and then go take care of business (Thursday) at Ozark,” Cummins said. “It’s a COC game, but it’s also a district opponent. It’s a big game for us to go win and it would set us up for a better district seed and potentially a good finish in the COC. Overall, I’m happy that we fought back (Tuesday) and I’m going to sleep a lot better tonight … about the fifth inning, I was getting a little stressed.”

Liz Rhuems went 3-for-4 for the Cardinals, while Alex Maturino drove in two runs. Laney Taylor was charged with the loss.

Webb City dropped to 9-9 overall and 3-2 COC entering Thursday’s road contest against Republic (12-6).

BOYS SOCCER: Carthage dominates Webb City in Tuesday match

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage Tigers officially broke free of the funk from their 3-2 loss Sept. 13 against Neosho with a commanding 7-0 win Tuesday over Central Ozark Conference rival Webb City at David Haffner Stadium.

Carthage scored three goals in the first half and four in the second, highlighted by a stretch of three goals in two minutes in the middle of the second half, and senior goalkeeper Julio Lopez Merida and the Tigers preserved a shutout victory.

“That’s always the key, even in games that are a blowout, if you let that goal in, it does bring in a little bit of disappointment,” Carthage coach Jacob Osborne said. “I was happy to see us finish it (a shutout) off.

“Our loss last Tuesday, we had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes that Neosho capitalized on, and we were still licking our wounds a little bit on Thursday (at home against Springfield Central). We didn’t give a performance that we were capable of but were still able to squeak out the win (3-2). I think it left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth on our team that we didn’t we show up like we should have on Thursday. We made sure that we were here today, and that’s what made the difference.”

Silas Laytham and Welle Welle scored the first two goals, then senior Jorge Mendez Lopez connected on the goal that broke the Cardinals’ back only 38.7 seconds before halftime.

Welle started the outburst with his second and third goals for a hat trick, fitting since his third goal required some fancy dribbling with his head before he put one past Webb City goalie Connor Black.

Welle did not start Tuesday because he was under the weather, but one could never tell by his performance on the field against Webb City.

Aldo Sanchez Cancinos finished off the three goals in two minutes and Bryan Ordonez closed out the scoring late in the 78th minute.

Carthage took 32 more shots than Webb City on the night, 40-8.

The Tigers, 6-2 overall and 3-1 COC, return home Thursday for a match against non-conference opponent McDonald County.

“We have Mac County on Thursday and then Carl Junction on Tuesday,” Osborne said. “Then, next weekend is where we’ll see Lee’s Summit West, which is a new district opponent for us. We’re going to play them at Kickapoo, so big games are coming. Our October schedule is ridiculous, plain and simple. There’s no let-up in October. We have to play those teams to get ready for the district that we’re in.”

Carthage’s schedule in October includes Joplin (Oct. 4), Kickapoo (Oct. 6), St. Michael the Archangel (Oct. 7), Ladue Horton Watkins (Oct. 8), Ozark (Oct. 11), Vianney (Oct. 14), Springfield Catholic (Oct. 20), Rockhurst (Oct. 22), and Nixa (Oct. 25).

Webb City, meanwhile, dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-3 COC entering Thursday’s non-conference match against College Heights.

BOYS SOCCER: Perez’s late goal gives Neosho win over Joplin

Juan Perez scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to lift the Neosho Wildcats to a 2-1 win over the Joplin Eagles on Tuesday night in Central Ozark Conference soccer action.

Joplin took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal from Azziel Palma, with Luciana Reyes getting the assist.

Neosho’s Arturo Lopez scored the tying goal in the 43rd minute.

Neither team scored until Perez’s game winner.

Joplin’s Andrew Jordan made seven saves, while Neosho’s Johnathan Tribbey recorded five saves.

Joplin (6-3) is at the Richard Wilson Classic this weekend. Neosho (5-0) hosts Willard next Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL: Joplin earns thrilling five-set win over Carthage

For a moment, it looked like the Joplin Eagles were going to earn a clean sweep over the rival Carthage Tigers on Tuesday night.

But just minutes later, after a sudden shift in momentum, it appeared as if the Eagles were going to let one slip away, as the visiting Tigers looked poised to pull off an improbable come-from-behind win.

In the end, Joplin got it done in the deciding set and the Eagles earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Tigers in Central Ozark Conference volleyball action inside Kaminsky Gymnasium.

The Eagles defeated the Tigers 25-18, 25-22, 25-27, 15-25, 15-7.

“It’s always fun to play a conference and district opponent,” Eagles coach Desiree Felker said. “Carthage brought the energy and intensity. They didn’t make our job easy tonight. I feel good that we were able to come out with the win. Credit to Carthage. They didn’t go away and they kept fighting. That made it really fun in here tonight.”

“That match was so much fun and I’m so proud of my girls,” Tigers coach Chloe Allmoslecher said. “There’s definitely a rivalry with us and Joplin. They knocked us off for the district championship last year. We got them at the jamboree this year. I was really proud of my girls. It’s not easy to lose the first two sets and come back. So I was really proud we could make it a five-set night. It was a fun game to watch.”

In a clash between Class 5 District 7 foes, Joplin won the first two sets and appeared to be on the way to a 3-0 sweep.

But the Tigers came from behind to win the third set and carried over their momentum en route to taking the fourth set, forcing a fifth set.

After dropping two straight sets, the Eagles took the lead right away in the deciding fifth set — and they never relinquished it.

“This win should give us a lot of confidence going forward,” Felker said. “I feel like we’re getting better every night, and I hope this win fuels their fire.”

The Eagles pulled away in the first set with Jayla Hunter serving.

The second set was deadlocked at 22 after Carthage’s Abby Holderbaum slammed a kill at the net. The Tigers committed a serving error, Joplin received an ace from Abby Edwards and the set ended after a Carthage attack error.

Joplin looked in control of the third set, as the Eagles led 21-14. But the Tigers stormed all the way back with a 10-3 run to tie it up at 24 after an ace from Mia De La Pena.

Carthage’s Kinley Adams and Joplin’s Bailey Owens traded kills before the Tigers scored two straight points on a Holderbaum kill and a Joplin hitting error.

The Tigers kept the momentum in the fourth set, leading 18-13 en route to the win.

“We did a good job of keeping the ball alive and we took advantage of their mistakes,” Allmoslecher said. “We noticed they had to run a little bit different lineup. We stayed level-headed on the court. It paid off. I’m proud of how my girls stayed mentally tough. I just wish we could have pulled it off.”

“We had some lineup changes that may have caused us to panic a little bit,” Felker said. “Carthage definitely kept the momentum in the fourth set. We just had to reset and refocus after the fourth set.”

Joplin never trailed in the fifth set, as the Eagles led 6-2 after a kill from Serafina Auberry. Auberry and Owens slammed two kills apiece late in the set to give the Eagles the win.

“We did a really good job of putting the ball away in the fifth set,” Felker said. “We found a way to terminate the ball. Serafina and Bailey took over and made sure that happened.”

A junior outside hitter, Owens led the Eagles with 16 kills. A senior outside hitter/middle blocker, Auberry added 14 kills.

Senior outside hitter Paisley Parker contributed 20 digs and nine kills.

Senior setter Kaya Cooper had 22 assists and 16 digs, while classmate Abby Hembree handed out 20 assists. Cooper and Parker had four aces apiece.

A senior libero, Hunter had a team-high 32 digs. Edwards added 13 digs.

Holderbaum had 15 kills for the Tigers, while Brielle Cartwright added 12 kills.

Riann Schwartz had 29 digs, while Raven Probert handed out 18 assists. Jaidyn Brunnert added 15 assists.

Both teams return to conference action on Thursday, as Joplin (8-5-1, 1-0 COC) is at Branson and Carthage (4-11, 0-1 COC) is at Ozark.

VOLLEYBALL: Neosho sweeps rival McDonald County

NEOSHO, Mo. — The Neosho Wildcats improved to 5-2 on the season with their 3-0 victory (25-17, 30-28, 25-19) Monday against non-conference rival McDonald County.

Neosho’s Whitney Kivett passes a ball during the Wildcats’ sweep of McDonald County on Monday.

The visiting Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in each set, only to see the Wildcats come back and win the set in the end.

“Coming out with the win is what we had planned for and discussed as a team,” Neosho coach Jessica Walton said. “We did not plan for McDonald County to be that close, but our serve receive gave us some issues. Overall, compared to last year, we aren’t a team that gives up and have learned to handle pressure a lot better than the previous year.

“I don’t feel like we tapped into our true team Monday night. I saw bits and pieces, but I am glad we pulled out the win. This is a special team, and I don’t want anyone to judge them based off that match.”

Neosho erased a slim 14-12 first-set deficit with a decisive 10-0 run and then exchanged a series of side-outs to close out the set 25-17.

Neosho fought off two set points to earn a 24-all score in the second, then fought off three more set points before putting together three straight points to claim the second 30-28.

Neosho went ahead 11-10 in the third set and never looked back en route to a sweep.

Neosho returns to action Tuesday with the Central Ozark Conference opener against Nixa (8-3).

“I think we have made great progress,” Walton said. “We are already on track to beat our record last year, and our JV has done an exceptional job and already broke their record. I feel we still have a lot of growing to do as far as conference play and starting out with Nixa is tough. They are a great team and a great program. We are taking some of our matches as a way of preparation for districts, so getting the experience playing against them and collecting more footage, we can hopefully start working on ways to compete better with them.”

SOFTBALL: McDonald County earns walk-off win over Nixa

ANDERSON, Mo. — McDonald County improved to 12-4 on the season with a 3-2 win over Nixa on Monday in non-conference softball action.

The Mustangs won in walk-off fashion.

In the final frame, Mac County’s Analisa Ramirez singled up the middle before Reagan Myrick and Maggie Pratt both reached on errors.

Next, Nevaeh Dodson hit a grounder to second base, and the throw home got past the catcher, with the tying and winning runs scoring on the play.

McDonald County had five hits, two by Ramirez.

Dodson drove in two runs on one hit, while Jacie Frenken homered.
