The Tigers improved to 2-0.

BOYS SOCCER: Webb City wins 1-0 in double overtime in finale

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Webb City Cardinals and the McDonald County Mustangs were approaching 100 minutes of scoreless soccer when Webb City junior forward Joseph Wermuth connected with the perfect header past McDonald County junior goalkeeper Tomas De La Cruz in the 98th minute for the 1-0 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams at Cardinal Stadium.

Webb City and McDonald County each had their opportunities to score through 80 minutes of regulation, 10 minutes of the first overtime, and seven minutes of the second overtime.

“I think we wore them down,” Webb City coach Nick Harmon said. “They’re a strong team, very hard to play, but I think we have a lot more depth that we were able to rotate in and out of the game. In the end, I think that made the difference, it allowed our guys to still be going strong in the end and find a way to score.”

The Cardinals avoided going into penalty kicks for what would have been the fourth time overall this season and second time in a row this week after Tuesday’s road loss against Central Ozark Conference foe Republic.

“We’ve been through three shootouts already this year,” Harmon said. “Won two and lost one, and the one we lost was Tuesday night this week, so I think the guys were motivated to not let it go to chance again and get the job done in OT.”

The Cardinals played nearly 200 minutes of soccer in the final week of the regular season between their matches against Republic and Webb City.

“It’s a good way to end the season with two competitive matches,” Harmon said. “It feels good to come out on top (Thursday).”

Webb City finished the regular season 10-11 overall, and the Cardinals are both district host and top seed in the Class 3 District 6 tournament starting on Saturday.

“We’re confident,” Harmon said. “We’re excited to see the boys compete. We like our matchups and everybody’s healthy, so the ball’s in our court and we’ve got to go out and perform and work hard for each other and execute.”

Webb City opens against No. 8 Kansas City Ruskin (4-11) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m.

The Mustangs (5-13) are the sixth seed, and they open Saturday against third-seeded Belton (8-8) in the fourth and final quarterfinal match of the day.

No. 4 Bolivar (9-11) and No. 5 Grandview (11-8) play after Webb City-Ruskin and No. 2 Willard (14-10) and No. 7 Carl Junction (5-17) play in the third quarterfinal match.

Neosho’s departure to Class 4 opens up this district to a new district champion.

BOYS SOCCER: Joplin beats Branson in regular season finale

Luciano Reyes and Ely Montanez scored two goals apiece as the Joplin High School boys soccer team defeated Branson 4-0 on Tuesday in the regular season finale.

Adam Montanez had a pair of assists for the Eagles, who finished the regular season with a record of 16-6.

Joplin is the No. 6 seed for the Class 4 District 6 tournament. The Eagles take on third-seeded Lee’s Summit West at 4 on Saturday in a district quarterfinal at Bud Herzog Stadium in Lee’s Summit.

BOYS SOCCER: Joplin blanks Mac County

ANDERSON, Mo. — The Joplin High School boys soccer team earned a 3-0 win over McDonald County on Wednesday night.

Luciano Reyes scored in the 15th minute for the lone goal of the first half.

Joplin’s Adam Montanez recorded a goal in the 50th minute, with Azziel Palma assisting.

Palma’s goal in the 58th minute, which was assisted by Alvarado Cordova, made it 3-0.

Joplin goalkeeper Andrew Jordan made three saves.

The Eagles took seven corner kicks to Mac County’s three.

Joplin (14-6) hosts Parkview on Monday and travels to Branson on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

McDonald County (5-11) is at Aurora on Tuesday and at Webb City on Thursday to conclude the regular season slate.

BOYS SOCCER: Joplin blanks College Heights

The Joplin Eagles netted six goals after halftime during their 7-0 home win on Thursday against College Heights Christian.

The Eagles scored those six goals over a 20-minute stretch of the second half from 28 minutes, 5 seconds through 8:15 remaining in regulation.

College Heights finished with three shots on the night.

“I think it was just slowing down a bit, figuring out how to respond to the pressure,” Joplin coach Josh Thompson said. “College Heights did a great job of putting on the pressure in the first half, and I think it’s probably just hard to keep up that tempo. They did a great job of just throwing us off our game. Second half, we were able to find our ground game. We’ve been a much better second-half team this year, for whatever reason, so I don’t know if that’s just our thing or what, but we definitely settled in more.”

Joplin senior Carlos Palma scored the lone goal of the first half and then fellow senior Adam Montanez, Palma, senior Grayden Cravens, senior Luciano Reyes, Montanez, and Ely Montanez deposited second-half goals.

The Eagles definitely spread the wealth.

“That’s a big deal for our guys,” Thompson said. “It’s just a lot of fun whenever the team can spread the ball around like that. And then it’s whoever is the closest to a goal at the end gets the goal. It makes the game fun, it makes us hard to defend, and it’s everything you want to see.”

The Eagles finished with their fifth shutout of the season and their second in a row, only two days after their 8-0 win over Central Ozark Conference rival Carl Junction.

“We were messy in the first half,” Thompson said. “We couldn’t do a lot even defensively. They were putting on more pressure. Second half, again, we cleaned it up and we were able to win balls in the air, 50-50 balls we were able to start stepping in on, and guys who winning possession is their strength were able to actually flex a little bit. Proud they turned it around.”

Class 4 Joplin improved to 13-5 overall on the season, and the Eagles are back in action on Tuesday with a big conference match at home against Ozark.

“We’d like to have a couple games back, but I can’t be too displeased looking forward to where we’re at,” Thompson said. “We’ll have Ozark to start off next week as a big test. We would like to have Neosho back and Carthage back and have another chance at those. Ozark will be a good one to let us know if we’re where we want to be at this point.”

Class 1 College Heights (with McAuley Catholic) dropped to 10-4 on the season and the Cougars saw their winning streak end at 10.

College Heights lost three straight matches to start the season, then started winning on Sept. 6 with a 2-1 overtime victory over Class 3 McDonald County.

“It was rough,” College Heights coach Scott Yount said. “We just came out flat, and we still had some decent opportunities in the first half, some good overlapping balls, and just missed a couple square-ball opportunities that could have made the difference. Just hoping to come out with a little more intensity in the second half, but we went flat again.”

College Heights welcomes Marshfield, Aurora, and Barstow for the College Heights Invitational on Saturday.

The Cougars play Marshfield at 10 a.m., while Aurora and Barstow face off in the other semifinal match.

The championship game will be played at College Heights with third place contested at Ozark Christian College. Championship and third-place matches are slated for a 2 p.m. start.

The Eagles had 12 shots on-goal in the match. Carl Junction goalkeeper Blake Miller made four saves.

Joplin hosts College Heights (with McAuley Catholic) on Thursday night.

Carl Junction is at Neosho next Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER: Reyes leads Joplin past Springfield Catholic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Luciano Reyes scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead the Joplin High School boys soccer team to a 3-2 win over Springfield Catholic on Monday night.

Joplin’s Adam Montanez scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute.

Catholic’s Kydon Huttenlocher tied it up with a goal in the 40th minute and teammate Matthew Gerety’s penalty kick in the 60th minute gave the Irish a 2-1 lead.

A senior forward, Reyes converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute.

Reyes scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, with Luis Alvarado assisting.

Joplin goalkeeper Andrew Jordan made eight saves, while Catholic’s Braedon Fritz stopped two shots.

Joplin had six corner kicks, while Catholic had two.

The Eagles are at Carl Junction on Tuesday night. Joplin will host College Heights with McAuley Catholic on Thursday night.

BOYS SOCCER: Carthage holds on against Joplin for seventh straight win

The Joplin Eagles made the Carthage Tigers sweat for about 20 minutes of playing time during the second half of their Central Ozark Conference match on Tuesday night, until Carthage junior Welle Welle put in a header off an Eric Garcia corner for a 3-1 lead with 6 minutes, 36 seconds remaining in regulation.

Welle apparently put in his third goal of the match as time expired, but the referee did not count it because he said Welle did not get off his kick before the buzzer, resulting in a 3-1 win for the Tigers.

“We didn’t do a very good job of finishing tonight,” Carthage coach Jacob Osborne said. “We had at least, I don’t know how many, three or four chances that we should have put away and we didn’t. We had time, we were able to get our heads up, just didn’t place the ball where we needed to and put it too close to the keeper.

“Joplin, they always play us tough. Since we let them hang around, once they got that goal, that made it scary and they really amped up the pressure. Our kids did a good job too to bounce back after that and to get back under control and start to play again, because there for a pretty big stretch there we struggled.”

Carthage built a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from Welle and assist from Edson Lopez nearly 14 minutes in and a header from George Laytham with an assist by Danilo Lopez at 8:46 before the half.

Early in the second half, Joplin cut the deficit in half with a goal by Adam Badr and assist by Adam Montanez.

“We were a shell of ourselves in the first half, unrecognizable from the standard that we set for ourselves,” Joplin coach Josh Thompson said. “The second half, I think the team responded well to our adjustments and we stopped playing scared. We were able to get Carthage on their back foot for a little bit in the second half, which was a good change, but it just wasn’t quite enough.

“We definitely had several opportunities that would have evened it up. The balls were maybe two or three inches either direction. Their keeper did a great job, and their defenders back there had good deflections, good blocks. We definitely had the type of pressure that we were seeking to put on them, for a good stretch there in the second half.”

Carthage finished with a 26-24 advantage overall in shots and Carthage senior Julio Lopez and Joplin freshman Toby Ipsen each finished with 12 saves.

“We had our freshman keeper in there today,” Thompson said. “This was his biggest varsity experience so far. Our senior keeper Andrew Jordan wasn’t 100 percent today. Proud of him for being able to step into those shoes and perform well. Then, second half, the defense was able to figure out some of their issues, resolve a lot of them, and put a very good attacking team shut down for a little while.”

Carthage improved to 12-2 overall and 5-1 COC, and the Tigers extended their winning streak to seven entering Thursday’s match at home against Kickapoo.

“Second district game we’ve had this year and that made it extra important because we only have three district games before we actually get to the district tournament,” Osborne said of the win Tuesday. “That makes all the district games important.

“Saturday was big, playing Lee’s Summit West. They’re one of the favorites in our district, and getting a win, it was a very tough game. It was good to be able to step on the field and see that we can play with them.”

Joplin, meanwhile, dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-3 COC, and the Eagles return home this weekend to host their annual varsity invitational tournament.

BOYS SOCCER: Reyes’ late goal lifts Joplin past Webb City

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Luciano Reyes recorded the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lift the Joplin Eagles to a 4-3 victory over Webb City on Tuesday night in boys soccer action at Cardinal Stadium.

Joplin received early goals from Azziel Palma and Reyes to take a 2-0 lead. Palma scored in the third minute, while Reyes recorded a goal in the eighth minute, with Adam Montanez assisting.

Webb City’s Alex Flores scored in the 27th minute and teammate Luis Gallardo recorded the game-tying goal in the 31st minute, with Joe Wermuth getting the assist.

Flores’ second goal, which came in the 33rd minute, gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

Joplin’s Palma recorded an equalizer in the 45th minute, with the assist going to Ely Montanez.

Reyes scored the go-ahead goal with just two minutes remaining in regulation, with Luis Alvarado assisting on the play.

Joplin’s Andrew Jordan made five saves, while Webb City’s Connor Black was credited with eight saves.

BOYS SOCCER: Carthage routs Carl Junction in conference match

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage Tigers scored two goals within the first 6 minutes, 17 seconds of their Central Ozark Conference match against Carl Junction on Tuesday at David Haffner Stadium.

Carthage dominated in both overall possession and overall shots, but the goals did not start coming in bulk for the Tigers until late in the second half.

Carthage scored four goals in over five minutes and the Tigers’ eighth goal punctuated an 8-0 victory over the Bulldogs with 4:45 remaining.

Carthage’s Danilo Lopez is pictured during Tuesday’s match with Carl Junction. All photos by Israel Perez.

“It was 3-0 when we hit our fifth post,” Carthage coach Jacob Osborne said. “We had more post hits than goals at that point.

“Finally, instead of blasting it into the back of the net, they got their head up and just picked corners, which is what we’ve been talking about. It’s hard to get through sometimes, they think that the blasts, the hard-hit goals, the highlight goals, are the ones they want. Just put it in the back of the net, that’s what we’ve been focusing on in practice.

“They had one shot and we had 41. It took us a while to get there.”

Carthage possessed the ball for 73 percent of the match Tuesday night.

Seven different Carthage players scored goals during the 8-0 win: Aldo Sanchez netted two goals and Welle Welle, George Laytham, Henry Hernandez, Eric Garcia, Silas Laytham, and Jorge Lopez scored one each.

Carthage improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 COC, and the Tigers bring four straight wins into their match on Friday against Capital City in the Kickapoo Shootout.

The Tigers are entering the portion of their schedule where the matches are going to significantly increase their strength of schedule.

“We have a very difficult stretch coming up,” Osborne said. “We’re excited for it. Friday and Saturday, we play at Kickapoo, and we play Capital City on Friday and Lee’s Summit West on Saturday. That’s a new district opponent for us, and they’re always one of the top teams in the state. That will be a tough matchup.

“Next week will be another tough week. Tuesday, we play Joplin. Thursday, we play Kickapoo and then Friday and Saturday, we’re going up to Kansas City to play St. Michael’s and Ladue from St. Louis.

“We’re sitting pretty good, but I’m ready to play some games where we’re going to be pushed more because so far this year we haven’t been pushed much. We’re going to get those games now. We’re going to take some bumps with it, but hopefully it makes us stronger and gets us ready for districts.”

Carl Junction, 4-9 overall and 1-4 COC, plays next Friday and Saturday in the Laker Shootout in Camdenton with matches against Hannibal on Friday to close out September and Camdenton and Hillsboro on Saturday to open in October.
