GIRLS TENNIS: Joplin claims COC win over Ozark

With a little extra motivation, and with a slightly different lineup, the Joplin High School girls tennis team earned a 7-2 win over the Ozark Tigers on Tuesday at the JHS athletic complex.

“Today the girls were playing really well in doubles,” Joplin assistant coach Richard Perry said. “We set up some new pairs we haven’t tried in a match before and it really seemed to work. The girls reacted positively to the changes and it reflected in the score. This was a good win for us because we lost to them early in the season when we had barely any of our varsity players playing, so we wanted to prove how good we really are. Now the ladies need to get ready for one of our toughest matches this Thursday.”

The Eagles, who avenged an Aug. 27 setback to the Tigers, won all three doubles matches to start the dual off on a positive note.

At No. 1 doubles, Joplin’s Astrid Cardenas and Emma Watts beat Hannah Metcalf and Loren Newell 8-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Abry Stayton and Mya Ndedi-Ntepe defeated Makenna Whitfield-Isabella Montileone 8-2, while Cloey Blank and Brynn Driver handled Madison Morgan-Margaret Kensinger 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Cardenas defeated Metcalf 8-1 at No. 1 singles, while Watts beat Whitfield 8-3 at No. 2 singles.

Stayton won the No. 3 singles match 8-2 over Newell.

Ozark’s Morgan defeated Ndedi-Ntepe 8-3 at No. 4 singles and Kensinger beat Blank 8-2 at No. 5 singles.

Joplin’s Driver pulled out an 8-6 win over Montileone at No. 6 singles.

MORE THAN VOLLEYBALL: College Heights knocks off Jasper while raising money for a good cause

Sporting a worthy cause with a new uniform scheme, the College Heights Christian volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-9, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-18) win over Jasper on Tuesday at Ozark Christian College.

“I think we came out strong in service,” College Heights coach Mary Colin said. “And we were aggressive on the hit. We had a couple of kill blocks right off the bat, and that momentum was fun in the first set. I felt like we settled in too early, and that’s what I was pushing them to not do. But at the same time, they were just trying to get comfortable with the gym. … Each time I barked at them about something, they fixed it quickly, which was very important. We knew that Jasper wasn’t going to relax even after the first set.”

RAISING MONEY FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE

Instead of their patented Green and White uniform, the Cougars (3-2) were draped in Black and Gold for their matchup against the Eagles in honor of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Coach Colin is close friends with Kristin Patterson, the Executive Director at Camp Quality Ozarks, a camp designed to provide an uplifting experience during the summer as well as year-round programs to enhance the quality of life for any Missouri child diagnosed with cancer. Coach Colin has volunteered at Camp Quality Ozarks for 10 years alongside Patterson, who is a childhood cancer survivor as well as a former member of the East Newton volleyball program.

“Kristin has really been pushing her entire community to go gold this month for the kids,” Coach Colin said. “She came in and talked to my team about childhood cancer awareness and gave each of the girls someone to pray for. They have done that, and one of our classes even wrote the children inspiring notes. All Seasons Signs and Printing donated our jerseys and they gave us t-shirts at cost to sell and raise money for Camp Quality. With that and donations, we raised $600 for Camp Quality.

“The girls know they are blessed to be on the court, healthy and playing a game that is super fun that they love. At the same time, they appreciate and honor families who don’t have the same experience they’re having.”

GAME ACTION

College Heights opened up with all of the momentum, building a 10-5 lead before a seven-point service run that featured several aces by Addie Lawrence gave the Cougars an insurmountable 17-5 lead.

College Heights opened the second game as quickly as the first, using two kills from Lauren Ukena and another by Lawrence to build a 6-1 advantage. Jasper rallied back though and tied the game at 6-6 on a kill by Crystal Smith. The lead never reached more than three points throughout the remainder of the set with Smith finishing off the game with a kill.

The third game was another tight contest, but the Cougars held the lead and momentum for much of the set. With Lawrence in service, CHC took a commanding 23-16 lead on a kill and ace by Lawrence followed by a kill from Lindsay Griesemer. College Heights finished the game off shortly after on a kill from Griesemer and a kill by Ukena.

The Cougars held the momentum throughout much of the fourth and final set, sealing the win by scoring the final five points of the game behind two kills from Ukena and a kill from Marley Woodford.

STATS

Maddy Colin set the assist record for CHC with 42 while adding five digs, three aces and 13 points in service. Ukena led College Heights with 17 kills, 11 digs and eight service points, while Lawrence finished with 15 kills, four aces, nine digs and a block to go along with 16 points in service. Griesemer had 10 kills, two aces and 10 digs.

PREP SOFTBALL: Elder dominates in the circle as seven-run fourth inning leads Carthage past Joplin

Carthage starting pitcher Jensyn Elder dazzled in the circle while the Tigers’ offense broke open a scoreless game by crossing home plate seven times in the top of the fourth inning on the way to an 8-0 road win over Joplin on Tuesday in Central Ozark Conference action.

After three scoreless innings, the Tigers (9-10, 2-1 COC) plated seven runs on two hits, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and two errors to take a commanding lead. The Eagles (7-7, 0-3 COC) were never able to recover before the final out was made.

“I think right now we are 2-1 in the conference after losing the other night against Nixa and this gets us rolling,” Carthage coach Stephanie Ray said. “We have a big game against Mac County (on Wednesday) and then we roll right into another COC and district opponent in Republic. I think this was a game to get us rolling with energy for the rest of the week.”

IN THE CIRCLE

Elder earned the complete-game win for Carthage after striking out 14 in seven scoreless innings on three hits and no walks.

“She steps on the rubber ready to go every time and just gets in a groove,” Ray said. “You can see it. She has that look in her eye and she is ready to throw. You can see the energy. We are confident playing defense behind her when she is in the circle to make any play.”

Jill McDaniel took the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, on eight hits, three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

GAME ACTION

Joplin had scoring chances early in the first three innings, with runners reaching scoring position in each the first and third frames. The Eagles were unable to take advantage before the Tigers broke through.

“We have to do a better job with our pitch selection,” Joplin coach Manny Flores said. “Against a good pitcher like that, we can’t chase pitches out of the zone. We were pressing too much early with runners in scoring position. If you are able to get one of two of those runs home, you never know. It could be a totally different ball game.”

Landry Cochran led off the top of the fourth with a double to center field before back-to-back one-out walks loaded the bases.

Jordyn Jones was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to score the first run of the game. A bases-loaded walk to Elder pushed across the second run, which was followed by a Joplin error that allowed a third run to score.

Mary Grace Richmond came up next and singled to left to score a pair of runs to make the score 5-0. A dropped third strike allowed Kate Potter to reach along with two more runs scoring to give the Tigers a 7-0 advantage.

“It really got going by Natalie Rodriguez getting into a deep count, fouling off pitches before drawing a walk,” Ray said. “We had a hit-by-pitch followed by a walk and finally got a big hit to bust it open.”

Carthage added to its lead in the top of the seven after Cochran doubled to lead off the inning before being driven home on a single through the right side by Presley Probert to make the score 8-0.

AT THE PLATE

Cochran led Carthage with three hits, including two doubles, and two runs scored, while Richmond finished with two hits, two RBI and a run scored.

Jaydn Pankow led Joplin with two hits, including a double, while Abby Lowery also had a hit.

PREP VOLLEYBALL: Webb City earns Senior Night win over Seneca

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Senior Night definitely went well for the Webb City Cardinals.

Webb City not only recognized its two seniors, but also halted a four-match skid with a convincing victory.

Webb City recorded a quick 3-0 non-conference prep volleyball win over Seneca on Tuesday night inside the Cardinal Dome.

In a matchup that took just about an hour to complete, the Cardinals defeated the Indians 25-16, 25-12, 25-9.

To Webb City coach Rhonda Lawrence, Tuesday’s quick and efficient win was a welcome sight following Monday’s road loss at Bentonville.

“Tonight, it was perfect timing for Senior Night,” Lawrence said. “I like to do the Senior Night a little bit earlier now. That way they’re not under so much pressure emotionally for that last home game. And getting off that losing skid was nice to see. Last night, Bentonville was a very salty team, but we were able to play with them and we’ll learn from that. That’s the level we need to see. But we didn’t play that well last weekend, so it was good to see us play at the level we know we can play at tonight. We played at a high level.”

Webb City’s lone seniors are Makenzie Storm and Kearston Galardo.

“Kenzie and Kearston have been through the thick of it,” Coach Lawrence said. “They were with us when we won districts two years ago and they were with us last year when we lost districts. They both love volleyball. They’ve both played since third grade. They’ve invested a lot into our program. It’s been a lot of fun seeing them develop.”

An outside hitter, Galardo recorded 15 kills on the night. A middle blocker, Storm had six kills, five digs and three blocks.

Also for the Cardinals, Brenda Lawrence had seven kills and four aces, while Aubree Lassiter added five kills. Kate Brownfield contributed six digs and five aces, while Jenna Noel chipped in four digs.

Junior setter Kyah Sanborn handed out 32 assists. Sophomore libero Sophia Crane recorded a team-high 14 digs.

Seneca’s setter duo of Rylee Darnell and Brylee Sage combined to hand out 15 assists.

Tatum White had seven kills, while Jera Jameson contributed four kills. Braxton Raulston had 11 digs, while Parker Long added 10 digs.

A kill from Storm gave Webb City a comfortable 11-2 lead in the first set. Moments later, Brownfield’s ace made it 14-4.

Seneca pulled within eight, but kills from Galardo finished off the opening set.

In the second set, Webb City went up 20-10 after a kill and an ace from Lawrence and a Galardo kill.

Seneca scored the first three points of the third set, but Webb City soon gained the momentum for good. The Cardinals led 17-7 en route to the match-ending win.

The Indians are at College Heights on Thursday.

Webb City hosts a triangular on Saturday with St. Mary’s Colgan (1:30) and El Dorado Springs (4:30).

Webb City fell to 6-5 and 1-2 in the COC with a third straight loss.

Willard hiked its record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the COC.

A Webb City error and Rylee Ritchey’s RBI single gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Cardinals tied it up in the bottom half, as Morgan Brannon was hit by a pitch and later came home on a Willard error.

The Tigers went ahead for good in the second on Kennedy Dalton’s RBI single.

Willard scored four runs in the third to extend its lead to 6-1. The Tigers then added two more runs in the fifth.

The hosts rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Peyton Hawkins smacked a two-run triple to right and Hannah Wells followed with a run-scoring single to make it 8-4.
