FOOTBALL: Neosho stays unbeaten at home this season with Branson win

NEOSHO, Mo. — The Neosho Wildcats evened their record at 3-3 overall and Central Ozark Conference with a 50-31 Homecoming win Friday night against the Branson Pirates at historic Bob Anderson Stadium.

Very late in the first half, Neosho took a 29-17 halftime lead when Quenton Hughes found Isaiah Green quickly over the middle and Green tossed it to Siler on the hook and ladder for a 48-yard touchdown as time expired.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved Neosho 15 yards back on the extra point and Juan Blancarte made it from nearly 35 yards out.

To open the second half, Neosho senior offensive lineman Carter Baslee came through with another huge special teams play, recovering a pooch kick at the Branson 30.

On the next play, Hughes and Collyn Kivett connected on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 36-17 Neosho lead only 12 seconds after halftime.

“That’s a huge part of the game that a lot of people talk about,” Neosho coach Brandon Taute said. “The middle four minutes there. They got a field goal late in the first half and knew they were going to get the ball back. For us to go down and get a touchdown was huge, then to get the ball back on the kickoff and score on the first play, it was momentum for us and a real shot to the heart for their team.

“We challenged our kids at halftime. We knew we had them on the ropes, let’s go for the knockout, and so they responded really well for us.”

Neosho came up with enough defensive stops throughout to be able to extend the lead, for example going ahead 50-24 early in the fourth after forcing a Branson punt and then scoring on a 5-yard TD pass from Hughes to Green on a slant in the end zone.

“The defense got big stops when they needed them,” Taute said. “They’ve got a big fullback (Cade Grimm) and he runs extremely hard. We knew he was going to cause some issues at times, and I thought the kids did a great job of continuing to rally and continuing to fight. We made some big plays and got them into some long-yardage situations where they’re not very comfortable. I thought we did a great job of executing the gameplan.”

Neosho and Branson each displayed their contrasting styles on their first possession.

As has been the pattern at home this season for the Wildcats, they struck first quick out of the gate with a short pass to Green turned into an 80-yard touchdown play down the Branson sideline only 23 seconds into the contest.

The Pirates answered with an 11-play, 63-yard scoring drive in 6:14 with all 11 plays solely adhering to running the football.

Hughes connected on a pair of touchdown passes each to Green and Kivett, while Siler added a pair of rushing touchdowns, including a 54-yard scamper that followed a big possession for Branson’s bruising bully Grimm.

Grimm’s 1-yard TD run at 8:02 in the third made it a 36-24 Neosho lead and Grimm carried the entire load on a possession that numbered eight plays for 62 yards.

Neosho improved to 3-0 at home this season, and the Wildcats are back on the road in Week 7 to face an 1-5 Ozark squad coming off a 49-7 defeat against Carthage.

“It was awesome,” Taute said. “Our home crowd has been awesome all year long. Our student section has been unbelievable. Our kids feed off their energy, so they’re a huge part of all the success we’ve had this year. It’s just a fun night to be a Wildcat.”

The team district tournament begins on Monday. Seventh-seeded Neosho takes on second-seeded Carl Junction.

FOOTBALL: College Heights falls short in Week 6

The College Heights Christian School 8-man football team suffered a 52-46 loss to Norborne (with Hardin-Central) on Friday night at Joplin High School.

The Cougars led 46-44 at the end of the third quarter, but the Pirates recorded the lone score of the final frame.

College Heights led 22-20 at halftime before both teams erupted for 24 points apiece in the third quarter.

The Cougars recorded 484 yards of offense, 380 through the air and 104 on the ground.

College Heights sophomore quarterback Logan Decker passed for 380 yards on 17 completions with four touchdowns and one interception.

Decker also ran nine times for 77 yards and two scores.

Cannon Miller hauled in six passes for 178 yards with two touchdowns. Miller’s touchdown receptions were from 32 yards and 58 yards.

Caleb Quade had 98 receiving yards on five catches with one TD, while Bo Sitton caught four passes for 90 yards with one TD.

Decker scored both of College Heights’ touchdowns in the first quarter, a 1-yard run and a 23-yard run.

Sitton scored on a 60-yard reception in the second quarter.

Miller caught both of his touchdown passes in the third period, and Quade had a 65-yard TD reception during the frame.

The Pirates scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter to go ahead for good.

College Heights (1-5) is at Lockwood next Friday.

FOOTBALL: Joplin holds Republic at bay before pulling away down the stretch

Twice before the fourth quarter, the Republic Tigers scored to pull within six points of the Joplin Eagles, including as late as the 55-second mark in the third quarter.

Even so, a fourth-quarter run—and a Tiger turnover on downs deep in their own territory—fueled the Eagles to a 42-28 rout in the end at Junge Field on Friday night.

Backed up to their own 10-yard line to start a drive late in the third quarter, Republic (3-3) marched for nine plays before quarterback Wyatt Woods found the end zone from seven yards out to pull within a touchdown at 27-21. Joplin (5-1) answered again, though, setting off a 15-point run that put the game away.

“Republic is a good team and they do a real good job up front with their blocking scheme,” Eagles coach Curtis Jasper said. “We did a really good job in the first half defending them. We gave our offense a chance to get going and got a good win tonight.”

Trailing 35-21 after Joplin junior running back Quin Renfro, who totaled 99 rushing yards on 15 carries and added a 15-yard touchdown reception, converted his second rushing touchdown on the night and added on the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-point margin, Republic was backed up at its own 24-yard line and faced a fourth- down and 7.  Woods was rushed and rolled right before spinning back the other way and attempting to flee the danger toward his own end zone when a teammate got tangled with a defender, drawing a penalty.

Woods got off a throw, but it fell to the turf, the penalty was declined and Joplin took over on downs. On the very next play, senior Drew VanGilder found the end zone for the Eagles’ final score of the night.

“Once we got up two (scores) … and when we were able to get that stop and punch in another one, that was a big shift right there,” Jasper said.

After only 20 points were scored between the two teams in the first half, the first five drives of the second resulted in consecutive touchdowns. After opening the game with two punts in a row, the Eagles scored a touchdown on every drive until there was more time on the play clock than the game clock and they knelt to end the game.

Earlier in the game, Republic made it a one-score contest right as time ran out in the first half. With the clock at all-zeroes, Woods rolled to his right, then threw across his body to James Rexroate who was waiting in the middle of the end zone. That made the halftime score 13-7 in favor of Joplin, but the Eagles received the ball to begin the second half, covering 58 yards in five plays for a score, and the Joplin offense simply didn’t give Republic an opportunity to catch up.

The game was a bounceback for Joplin after suffering a 49-35 defeat at the hands of Nixa in Week 5.

“We’ve still got a lot of things we’ve got to get better at,” Jasper said. “I don’t want to look ahead, but obviously, Class 6 competition is really good competition and we want to go and accomplish our goals in the playoffs, but there’s a lot of things we’ve got to get better at.”

The Eagles will host the Carl Junction Bulldogs for homecoming next week.

“We have Carl Junction at home next Friday night and that’s always a fun game because you know Buckmaster and some of those other guys coached here,” Jasper said. “And we know that staff really well. Obviously the kids, being a close game, know each other real well, so it should be a lot of fun.”

FOOTBALL: Webb City routs Willard in Week 6

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Led by a strong first half, Webb City rolled to a 49-28 victory over Willard on Friday night in a Central Ozark Conference clash at Cardinal Stadium.

Ranked fifth in Class 5, Webb City hiked its record to 4-2.

The Cardinals led 21-0 early and 35-6 at the half against their district opponent.

“It was a great first quarter and a great first half,” Cardinals coach John Roderique said. “We gave up a score on a long pass where someone got out of position. But overall, I thought we did a really good job controlling the game. Offensively, I thought we were pretty sharp. Defensively, we were good early. I know it was a while before they had a first down.”

Webb City led 42-6 by the end of the third period.

In Week 6 of the 2022 season, Webb City scored 21 unanswered points in the opening period.

Landon Johnson’s 1-yard QB keeper finished off Webb City’s opening drive, while Aidan Alberty’s 11-yard sprint made it 14-0 before Breckin Galardo’s 1-yard touchdown plunge gave the Cardinals an early three-score lead.

Willard got on the board with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Russell Roweton to Clayton Scott.

Omari Jackson’s 4-yard touchdown scamper made it 28-6 with 2:35 left in the first half.

Cy Darnell’s 23-yard touchdown sprint on a reverse gave the Cardinals a 35-6 halftime advantage.

Webb City scored the lone TD of the third quarter—a 4-yard run by Alberty.

The Cardinals’ final touchdown of the night came on Ethan Baird’s 39-yard run with 7:49 left.

Willard scored 22 points in the fourth quarter against Webb City’s reserves for the final margin.

At the same time, Roderique noted the importance of getting lots of younger players experience under the Friday night lights.

“We’ve had that situation so many times over the years,” Roderique said. “You get up, so you want to get other guys in the game. It’s so good for morale. It’s just good for the younger kids to get a chance to play on a Friday night. For some of them, it was their first significant playing time this year. They got their feet wet a little bit.”

The Cardinals recorded 482 yards of offense, with 434 rushing and 48 passing.

A senior running back, Alberty had 118 rushing yards on 10 carries with two scores. A junior, Galardo ran 10 times for 79 yards. Baird, a senior, added 76 rushing yards, while Jackson, a junior, contributed 65 yards in his return to action.

Webb City used three different quarterbacks in the game, Johnson, junior Braden McKee and freshman Gabe Johnson.

“We started Landon on defense tonight because we’ve been so decimated by injuries,” Roderique said. “Landon is such an unselfish kid. He was willing to do whatever we needed him to do.

“We’ve been wanting to work Gabe in there more,” Roderique added. “He’s a pretty dynamic kid. He does a great job with the football in his hands. And Braden is our two-minute drill guy. He had a great series before halftime for us. I thought all of our quarterbacks did a nice job for us tonight.”

Trey Roets went 7-for-7 on PAT kicks. William Hayes and Andrew Young both had interceptions for the hosts.

The Tigers (0-6) had 299 yards, 228 passing and 71 rushing. Roweton completed 14-of-27 passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Webb City is now 22-0 all-time against Willard.

FOOTBALL: Nixa cruises past Carl Junction 58-6

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Nixa started fast and never looked back in a 56-8 win over Carl Junction in Central Ozark Conference action on Friday.

The Eagles (6-0) held off the Bulldogs’ early attempts at getting into the end zone and built a 14-0 lead by the start of the second quarter. Nixa scored three more times in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead over Carl Junction (2-4) by the intermission and didn’t slow down in the second half.

Nixa got on the scoreboard on its first drive when QB Connor Knatcal found TE Gavin Kranz for an 8-yard touchdown connection with 5:43 in the opening quarter.

Knatcal hooked up with WR Kael Combs for a 22-yard touchdown with 1:58 left in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 14-0 advantage over Carl Junction.

The Eagles were facing first-down and 16 from their own 32-yard line when Combs caught a pass in the flat on the bubble screen before using a block and sprinting his way past the Bulldog defense for a 68-yard score to push the lead to 21-0 with 7:34 left in the first half.

RB Ramone Green added a 7-yard touchdown for Nixa with 4:55 left to play in the first half for a 28-0 lead.

FOOTBALL: Gall surpasses 1,000 total yards as Carthage rolls past Ozark

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Senior RB Luke Gall eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the season as the Class 5 top-ranked Carthage Tigers rolled past Ozark 49-7 on Friday.

On the third play of the game, Gall broke free on a run between the tackles on third-down and short for a 58-yard touchdown to give Carthage an early 7-0 lead and all of the momentum. Gall surpassed 1,000 total yards of offense on the season in the process, heading into the matchup against Ozark with 792 rushing yards and 151 receiving yards through five games.

The win gives Carthage a 5-1 record, while Ozark falls to 1-5.

Following the quick touchdown, Ozark turned it over on downs on its first drive of the game. Carthage needed just four plays to find the end zone again when QB Cooper Jadwin faked a handoff up the middle and kept the ball to the right for a 38-yard touchdown and a 14-0 advantage with 6:07 left to play in the first quarter.

Jadwin found the end zone again on Carthage’s third drive of the game, capping a six-play drive with a 9-yard touchdown up the middle on a fake to Gall to the right for a 21-0 lead with 2:40 to play in the opening quarter.

On the next Carthage possession, Jadwin found TE Tyler Willis for a 30-yard completion to set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Gall, his second of the game, to push the lead to 28-0 before the intermission.

The Carthage defense fell on a fumble near midfield on the following Ozark drive, with the offense turning the takeaway into a score after Gall’s third touchdown of the game on a run from 5 yards out, his 24th of the season, to cap a five-play, 53-yard drive while moving the lead to 35-0 with 1:26 left before the intermission and enforcing the running clock out of the break.

Ozark looked as if they were stopped for another three-and-out punt on the first drive out of the halftime break, but the return was muffed by Carthage, with OHS falling on it to retain possession. Ozark capitalized on the new life as QB Brady Dodd rushed the ball 46 yards down to the Carthage 1-yard line before he finished it off with a touchdown on the ensuing first-and-goal snap to cut the lead to 35-7 with 7:51 to play in the third.

Gall helped Carthage answer right back after taking a handoff and carrying multiple defenders for the first five yards before breaking loose and sprinting away for a 54-yard touchdown to push the lead out to 42-7 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.

Carthage’s Tayvion Bailey intercepted a Dodd pass on the ensuing Ozark drive to give his Tigers possession at the OHS 46. Jadwin followed with a 34-yard run on the keeper and Carthage capped the drive two plays later with an 8-yard touchdown run from Bailey for a 49-7 cushion inside the final minutes of the third quarter. Bailey added a second interception with 3:05 left to play in the game.
