SOFTBALL: Neosho erupts offensively in COC win over Carl Junction

NEOSHO, Mo. — The Neosho Wildcats’ offense erupted during a 13-2 run-rule victory in five innings on Tuesday against the Carl Junction Bulldogs at the Neosho Athletic Complex.

Neosho scored two runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth, and two in the fifth to finish it off, while Neosho senior pitcher Chloe Patterson and her fellow Wildcats silenced Carl Junction after the Bulldogs scored both their runs in the first.

Neosho sophomore shortstop Beclynn Garrett delivered a game-tying two-run home run in the first, highlighting the Wildcats’ 13 runs on 12 hits Tuesday.

“We were not sharp in the top of the first,” Neosho coach Catie Cummins said. “That being said, we responded immediately whenever we got a chance to get some runs back. The two-run home run gets us right back in it and it feels like a new game so we’re not pressing as much. I was very pleased with that.

“I challenged them at the end of the first and said basically that you’ve got to get it together. Maybe my words were not quite that kind, but that is about what it was, and they responded. They faced that adversity, realized they were not sharp the first inning, and just bounced back. I appreciate that.”

Patterson pitched three scoreless innings after the first and sophomore Carleigh Kinnaird came on for a scoreless fifth, leaving the Wildcats a chance for the run-rule victory which they quickly earned in two batters.

“I thought Chloe did a great job settling in after that (first),” Cummins said. “She just gave up a few hard hits, but other than that, she worked the ball around. The plan was to leave her in, but after taking a ball off her hand, we decided it was best not to risk it. We had Carleigh warmed up and she came in and gave us an inning. She did a great job.”

Meanwhile, on the offensive side, Kinnaird hit a two-run triple and Grace Johnson a RBI single in the third, Abbie Carpenter an RBI single and Johnson a RBI double in the fourth, and Amber Kinnaird ended the game on a two-run inside-the-park home run.

“They pounded it,” Cummins said. “We told them that it’s different than (McDonald County), and the pitcher was a little bit quicker. We prepared on Sunday for that pitcher, so then it was an in-game adjustment for today. I thought our middle of the lineup did the in-bat adjustment. Whiff on a few pitches, see a pitch go by, and they were ready to go. I was very pleased with our in-bat adjustments, and we didn’t have to wait around until the second or third time through the lineup to hit the ball hard.”

Neosho improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 Central Ozark Conference, and the Wildcats have won four of their last five games entering Thursday’s conference game against Branson.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Cummins said. “I think we are still not playing our best ball and I’m OK with that. We want to be playing our best in October. That’s the goal. With that being said, we’re in a good spot to finish at the top of our conference. That’s in the back of our mind. We’re three games in and in the past, we have not been set up as nicely as we are now with our early wins. It’s going to be a challenge, but I think we can do it. We have to have the right mindset. We’re playing well.”

Hannah Cantrell, Madi Olds, and Dezi Williams each had one of Carl Junction’s three hits against Patterson and Carleigh Kinnaird. Carl Junction’s first two hitters, Cantrell and Ryleigh Palmer, each scored a run and Olds picked up the team’s lone RBI with a groundout bringing home Cantrell. Palmer scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs also compounded their difficulties Tuesday by committing five errors.

Carl Junction enters Thursday’s conference game at home against Republic at 4-6 overall and 0-3 COC.

SOFTBALL: Big innings lead Carthage past Webb City

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A pair of big innings propelled the Carthage Tigers to a 12-1 run-rule win over the rival Webb City Cardinals on Tuesday in Central Ozark Conference softball action.

Carthage pushed across six runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth.

The Tigers improved to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in the COC, while the Cardinals fell to 5-6 and 2-1 in conference play.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Landry Cochran’s RBI single to left, but the Cardinals tied it up in the top of the second on Alex Maturino’s bloop RBI single into left.

Carthage scored six times in the third inning.

After two hits, the Cardinals failed to corral Jenna Calhoon’s squeeze bunt, allowing Aven Willis to score. An RBI groundout off the bat of Cochran made it 3-1.

Webb City’s third error of the frame allowed Carthage to take a three-run advantage before Ashlynn Jackson delivered an RBI single for a 5-1 cushion.

Later in the inning, Shelby Hegwer’s two-run single extended Carthage’s lead to 7-1.

In the fourth, Jackson and Brooklyn Dolon-Main hit RBI singles before Hegwer launched a three-run home run for a 12-1 lead.

The game ended after the Cardinals failed to score in the top of the fifth.

VOLLEYBALL: Joplin sweeps Springfield Catholic for confidence-building win

By coming through in the clutch again and again, the Joplin Eagles earned a clean sweep.

Three close sets went Joplin’s way in a non-conference volleyball clash with Springfield Catholic on Tuesday inside Kaminsky Gymnasium.

The Eagles got it done in crunch time and topped the Irish 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 to earn a confidence-building victory.

“That’s a big win for us,” Eagles coach Desiree Felker said. “That was a good win. Springfield Catholic does a lot of good things. They’re very aggressive at the net. We learned a lot this past weekend at Hillcrest, and I think we’re better for it.”

Felker noted her squad displayed a lot of determination in the hard-fought match.

“We dug in tonight and we refused to go away,” Felker said. “That showed out on the court. I think the girls have made a decision on what kind of team they want to be. They want to be a team that will dig in, play for each other and not back down when it gets tough.”

Junior outside hitter/middle blocker Bailey Owens led the Eagles with 10 kills, with many of those kills coming at crucial moments.

“She had a good night for us,” Felker said of the 6-foot-1 Owens. “She did a lot of nice things for us at the net. I can’t say enough about her.”

Senior outside hitter Serafina Auberry added five kills for the Eagles. Senior setter Kaya Cooper handed out 13 assists, while classmate and fellow setter Abby Hembree had eight assists.

Senior defensive specialist Jayla Hunter had a team-high 16 digs, while senior Paisley Parker added 14 digs. Sophomore Adalynn Noirfalise contributed 13 digs and senior Abby Edwards had 10 digs.

Springfield Catholic standout Grace O’Reilly recorded 19 kills. A Long Beach State commit, O’Reilly recently surpassed 1,000 career kills.

The first set was close all the way, as there were 11 ties. The final deadlocked score came at 23-23. Owens recorded back to back kills to give the hosts the opening set.

Catholic held a 14-7 lead in the second set before the Eagles gained the momentum with Auberry serving. Joplin eventually tied the set at 14.

Like the first set, the second set was deadlocked at 23 when Owens slammed a kill. On set point, Owens blocked O’Reilly’s kill attempt at the net to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The third set was much like the first two, as neither team was able to gain much separation. In fact, there were 12 ties in the third set, the last coming at 21-all.

Joplin took advantage of a Catholic attack error and then went up 24-21 after a pair of aces from Auberry.

The Irish scored two straight points, but the hosts ended the night when Owens hammered home her final kill of the evening.

“Defensively, we did a very good job tonight,” Felker said. “They refused to let a ball hit the floor. Catholic’s No. 4, O’Reilly, she did a really good job. We did a good job of doing our best to get a touch and keep the play alive.”

The Eagles, who have been assigned to Class 5 District 7 this season, will travel to Aurora on Thursday for what will be a final tune-up before conference play begins next week.

Joplin (6-5-1) will begin Central Ozark Conference action next Tuesday with a home date against Carthage.

SOFTBALL: Joplin rallies back several times and walks off against Republic for 10th straight win

Finding itself trailing several times against Republic on Tuesday at the JHS Athletic Complex, Joplin softball didn’t waver in the face of adversity and rallied several times before walking off for a 9-8 win over the Tigers in Central Ozark Conference and district action.

“First off, credit to Republic because they just don’t go away,” first-year Joplin coach Brenden Schneider said after the win. “They’re a well-coached team that made the most of every opportunity they were given. That is a really good ballclub.

“For us, I kept telling the girls they needed to have some grit and find a way, when things aren’t going our way, to win a game. Actually, yesterday, we had a talk before practice and we told them it was great that they’ve won nine in a row, but the game is going to show you some adversity at some point. What is that going to look like and how are you going to react? … Most importantly for me—(they) were there to pick each other up. If someone made a mistake, someone was there stepping up and finding a way to make it happen. That has been the theme for our season. We are a family and we pull for each other.”

The victory is the 10th straight for the Eagles, who improved to 16-2 (3-0 COC) on the season and haven’t taken a loss since the opening game of the Paige Neal/Christina Freeman Invitational on Sept. 2. The 16th win of the season also matches the win total for all of last year, and the Eagles still have more than 10 games remaining on the schedule.

“Last year, Coach (Manny) Flores did such a good job of getting these girls into a position where they expected to win,” Schneider said about the confidence his girls are playing with this season. “That is huge for us. These girls go out every single day and know that if they play hard, hit and give it our all, we are going to put ourselves in a position to win, and that is what happened tonight.”

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Jill McDaniel earned the complete-game win in the circle for Joplin after allowing eight runs, five earned, on five hits, seven walks and six strikeouts in seven innings.

Freshman Piper Dishman took the loss for Republic after allowing nine runs, six earned, on 13 hits, four walks and eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

ONE LAST RALLY

After Republic plated three runs, two unearned, in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at 8s, Joplin was looking for its third rally of the game. Who better to turn to than sophomore Maria Loum, who already had a two-run double and two-out single to kick off the Eagles’ rally in the fifth. Loum tallied her third hit with a bunt single to get things started.

“What an X-factor having her down there (in the No. 9 spot),” Schneider said of Loum’s impact. “She just has the ability, when it’s crunch time, to just get on base. She is always right there in the thick of it. She always seems to be either hitting someone in or getting on base, and she is just a weapon on the basepaths with her speed.”

Junior Bailey Ledford followed with a single through the right side and sophomore Jadyn Pankow was intentionally walked two batters later with runners on second and third with one out to load the bases. Facing a 2-2 count, sophomore Riley Kelly lined a single off the second baseman’s glove and into center field to play Loum for the walk-off victory.

“It is pretty impressive to watch these girls work at the plate right now,” Schneider said about watching his team constantly battle back in its walk-off win over Republic. “Their approach was really good tonight. They made sure they weren’t chasing a whole lot tonight and were trying to go the other way with it. Look at the game-winning hit—it was a base hit to the right side.”

TRADING BLOWS

Republic got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning after sophomore Lili Richerson drew a walk to put runners at the corners with one out. Richerson took off from first in a steal attempt and after the throw down to second, sophomore Addison Walker broke from third and scored before the return throw—which was wild—to home arrived, with Richerson taking third in the process.

Richerson touched home two batters later on a two-out RBI single from junior Graci Woods for a 2-0 lead. Woods stole second and wound up scoring after a pair of throwing errors by Joplin to cap the Tigers’ three-run second inning.

Joplin rallied with two-out magic in the bottom of the second inning after Loum doubled home a pair of runs on a hard ground ball to right-center to trim the Eagles’ deficit to 3-2.

The Eagles came all the way back in the third inning after sophomore Abby Lowery led the inning off with a single before Pankow went opposite field in the next at-bat with a line-drive double to right-center field to plate the runner from first to tie things at 3s.

Joplin took the 4-3 lead moments later after loading the bases later in the frame with one out before Kirsten McMillen hit a hard ground ball to second, which was bobbled, allowing the go-ahead run to score as McMillen was thrown out at first.

RepMo put on a rally of its own in the top of the fourth after using a hit-by-pitch and two walks to start off the inning, which led to a pair of runs scoring for a 5-4 advantage. The first Tigers’ run scored on a passed ball, with the second coming home on a sacrifice bunt from Woods.

Joplin refused to go away, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth before Kelly brought home the tying run with a groundout to second to make the score 5-5.

The Eagles used two-out lighting once again in the last of the fifth inning when Lowery singled up the middle with two strikes to score Loum, who had a two-out single up the middle to start the rally, giving JHS a 6-5 lead. After a second run scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, Pankow singled to left to plate the third tally of the inning for an 8-5 advantage.
The Tigers didn’t make it easy on the Eagles, scoring three runs on one hit, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and an error to tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the seventh. Two of the runs coming home were unearned.

AT THE PLATE

Ledford had two hits and scored two runs, while Lowery had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Pankow finished with three hits, two RBI and a run scored to give the first three batters in the Joplin’s lineup a total of eight hits, five runs scored and three RBI. Loum went 3-for-4 at the plate to go along with her two runs and two RBI, while Kelly had a hit and two RBI and McMillen had a hit and an RBI.

ON DECK

Joplin continues its conference slate with a home game against Ozark on Thursday.
