TRACK & FIELD: Joplin captures both team titles at Webb City

 

WEBB CITY, Mo. — In a final tune-up before next week’s Central Ozark Conference Meet, Joplin’s boys and girls track squads claimed the team championships at the Webb City Invitational on Friday inside Cardinal Stadium. 

Joplin’s boys won the meet with 163 points. Willard (157), Neosho (122), Webb City (93) and East Newton (48) rounded out the top five teams. 

Joplin’s girls compiled 156.5 points. Webb City (150), Carl Junction (126), Neosho (86) and McDonald County (63) rounded out the top five teams.

 

JOPLIN HIGHLIGHTS

Eagles senior Donovyn Fowler won both of his signature events, as the future Oklahoma Sooner took first in the triple jump (14.52m) and the long jump (7.18m). 

Joplin’s Donovahn Watkins won the shot put with a heave of 16.86 meters and Gustavo Onate took first in the 300 hurdles in 44.48 seconds. 

The Eagles won three of the four relays. 

Joplin’s team of Hobbs Campbell, Zaben Barnes, Nicholas Horton and Evan Matlock won the 4×800 relay in 8:14. 

The Eagles won the 4×200 in 1:34, with Orion Norris, Tayshaun Palmer, Davin Thomas and Luke Vieselmeyer running. Joplin crossed the line first in the 4×100 in 44.19 seconds, with Fowler, Norris, Thomas and Vieselmeyer competing.

Taking second for the Eagles were Norris (400) and Nicholas Horton (800). 

Finishing third for the Eagles were Aidan Sampson (LJ), Ian Horton (1600), Drew VanGilder (javelin), Norris (200) and Matlock (3200). Taking fourth were Watkins (discus) and Grey Edwards (1600).

The Joplin girls won the 4×200 relay in 1:49, with Brynn Driver, Allie Lawrence, Abigayle Lowery and Amaya Montgomery competing. 

The Eagles were second in the 4×100, with Kaylie Anderson, Abigail Eckert, Lawrence and Lowery running. The JHS girls were third in the 4×400, with Eckert, Montgomery, Owens and Driver running. 

Finishing second in their individual events were Jovi Frost (shot put), Phia Vogel (100), Driver (TJ, 400) and Maria Loum (PV). Taking third were Anderson (100) and Lowery (200).

Finishing fourth in their respective events for the JHS girls were Bailey Owens (high jump), Claire Jasper (shot put), Addison Route (100 H), Lowery (100), Eckert (LJ), Lawrence (PV, 200), Kirsten Thom (300H) and Mairi Beranek (3200). 

 

WEBB CITY HIGHLIGHTS 

The Webb City girls won seven events. 

Riley Hawkins won two events for the Cardinals. A Missouri Southern signee, Hawkins crossed the line first in the 1600 with a time of 5:26 and also won the 3200 in 12:03. 

Also winning events for the Webb City girls were Chase Stilley (high jump), Ripley Shanks (pole vault), Aubree Lassiter (discus) and Dawsyn Decker (javelin). 

The team of Izzy Lopez, Abi Street, Sophia Crane and Alanna Bundy won the 4×800 relay in 10:41. 

Street was the runner-up in the 3200, while finishing third in their events were Decker (shot put), Essence Robinson (LJ, 400) and Bundy (800).

The Cardinals were third in both the 4×100 and 4×200 and fourth in the 4×400.

Individual event winners for the Webb City boys were William Wolfe (high jump) and Lucas Ott (javelin). Wolfe cleared 1.92 meters, while Ott recorded a toss of 50.93 meters. 

Trey Roets was the runner-up in the javelin, while Noah Moss (110 H), Dupree Jackson (LJ), Jose Antillon (400), Dustin Brockmiller (3200) all finished fourth in their respective events. 

Webb City’s boys were second in three relays—the 4×100, 4×200, 4×800. 

 

COLLEGE HEIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS

The College Heights Christian Cougars competed alongside the area’s large schools.

For the College Heights girls, Addie Lawrence won the 400-meter run (1:00) and was the runner-up in the 200 (26.55).

College Heights’ girls took second in both the 4×200 relay and the 4×400, with Jayli Johnson, Lawrence, Lauren Ukena and Katie Moss competing. 

The CHC girls finished third in the 4×800, with Marla Anderegg, Madelynn Jordan, Moss and Emily Winters competing. 

Ukena was third in the 300 hurdles, while Maddy Colin (high jump) and Johnson (400) finished fourth in their events. 

The CHC boys finished fourth in the 4×200 relay, with Zach Beaty, Colsen Dickens, Caleb Quade and Ethan Ukena competing. 

College Heights’ boys were fifth in the 4×400, with Beaty, Dickens, Derrick McMillan and Quade running. 

 

CARL JUNCTION HIGHLIGHTS

Carl Junction’s girls won eight events. 

Ally Montez (100 hurdles, 300 H), Olivia Vediz (triple jump, long jump) and Sydney Ward (100-meter dash, 200) each won two events.  

The CJ girls won the 4×100 relay in 50.8 seconds, with Vediz, Montez, Hannah Cantrell and Ward competing. The Bulldogs also took first in the 4×400, with Ward, Emily Rice, Delaney Harris and Montez competing.

Also for the Bulldogs, Cantrell (LJ) and Loren Lee (discus) placed second in their events, while Sloan Uebinger (100 H), Acadia Badgley (PV) and Madilyn Olds (javelin) all took third. 

Leading the CJ boys was Colton Talken, who placed fourth in the 100. 

 

NEOSHO HIGHLIGHTS

Neosho’s Kaden Cole won the 1600 in 4:34.

The Wildcats took first in the 4×400 in 3:37, with Izaiah Hill, Evan Haskins, Connor Jordon and Isaiah Green competing. 

Taking second in their events for the Wildcats were Tyrese Hill (100, 200), Jared Siler (LJ) and Green (TJ). Siler was also third in both the triple jump and high jump.  

The Wildcats were third in the 4×200 relay, with Marcus Duncan, Haskins, Green and Tyrese Hill competing. The NHS team of Jordon, Brandon Doyle, Brandon Cargile and Gabe Mabrey finished fourth in the 4×800 relay. 

On the girls side, Neosho’s Riley Kemna was second in both the 1600 and the 3200.

Finishing third were Miranda Wennhold (high jump) and Chloe Wood (3200), while Wennhold was fourth in the triple jump.  

The NHS girls were second in the 4×800 (Wood, Prough, Kivett, Kemna).  

Beclynn Garrett placed fourth in the javelin with a school record toss of 32.53 meters. 

 

MCDONALD COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS

McDonald County’s Jada Alfaro won the girls shot put (9.98m). Taking second in their events for the Mac County girls were Savannah Leib (high jump) and Mariana Salas (javelin), while Sosha Howard placed third in the triple jump.

Placing third for the McDonald County boys were Jr. Eliam (discus) and Ricky Wright (110 H), while finishing fourth was Joshua Pacheco (TJ).

 

OTHER EVENT WINNERS

Other event winners in the boys meet were East Newton’s Gabe Bergen (400) and Kelton Sorrell (3200) and Willard’s Isaac Shaw (discus), David Schwartz (110 H), Walter Jones-Luster (100, 200) and Thomas Shuster (800). 

Willard’s Ella Hayter won the girls 800.

WHAT’S NEXT? 

Squads from Joplin, Webb City, Carl Junction and Neosho will compete at the Central Ozark Conference Meet next Thursday at Carthage High School’s David Haffner Stadium. 

College Heights will compete at the district meet on May 7 in Sarcoxie.

TRACK & FIELD: Cardinals, Bulldogs, Tigers compete at Carl Junction invite

 

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — With only bragging rights on the line, close rivals Webb City, Carl Junction and Carthage got together on Friday for the Carl Junction Invitational track meet at Bulldog Stadium.

No team scores were kept at the invite, but all three schools had many highlights and several standout performances. 

 

WEBB CITY GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

The Webb City girls won nine events.

Missouri Southern recruit Riley Hawkins won two individual events. Hawkins crossed the line first in the 400-meter run in 1:02 and also won the 1600 in 5:25. Hawkins took second in the 3200 in 12:26. 

Abi Street took first in the 3200 with a time of 12:18 and finished second to her teammate Hawkins in the 1600 in 5:35. 

Hally Philpot won the 800 in 2:38 and Alanna Bundy took first in the 300 hurdles in 54.33 seconds.

Sophomore Dawsyn Decker took first in both the shot put (31-3.25) and the javelin (124-0.25), while Aubree Lassiter won the discus (97-5.25). 

Webb City’s 4×800 relay team of Sophia Crane, Izzy Lopez, Alanna Bundy and Elliett Capron took first in 10:53. 

The Cardinals were second in the 4×200, second in the 4×400 and third in the 4×100. 

Finishing second in their respective events were Kylie Jennings (100), Essence Robinson (400, LJ), Crane (800),  Chase Stilley (HJ) and Ripley Shanks (pole vault).

Taking third for the Cardinals were Stilley (100), Robinson (200), Bundy (3200), Maci Brown (100 hurdles), Lopez (300 hurdles), Khloe Rhuems (HJ) and Aubrey McKnight (javelin). Finishing fourth were Emily Countryman (1600), Chloe Emery (300H), Halle Hurd (TJ) and Kenzie Storm (javelin).

 

WEBB CITY BOYS HIGHLIGHTS

The Webb City boys won seven events.

Jose Antillon won the 400 in 52.9 seconds, Mason Hedger took first in the 1600 in 4:52 and Roman Borboa finished first in the 3200 (9:57). 

William Wolfe won the high jump (5-10), Justin Allen took first in the pole vault (11-11.75) and Dupree Jackson claimed first in the long jump (20-10.5).

The Cardinals won the 4×800 relay and took second in the 4×100 and 4×400.

Taking second in their individual events were Jordan Thornburg (100), Omari Jackson (200), Daunte Smiles (800, 1600), Evan Stevens (3200), Aidan Alberty (HJ, LJ), Dalton Thurlo (shot put), Nathaniel Miller (discus) and Malique McCarter (javelin). 

Third-place finishers were Dakota Grove (1600), Hedger (800), Dustin Brockmiller (3200), Jace Jones (110 H), Jadon Brisco (300 H) and Thurlo (discus).

Finishing fourth for the Cardinals were William Headrick (100), Max Higginbotham (200), Ricardo Arrieta (800), Joshua McDaniel (110 H), Jones (300 H), Joseph DeGraffenreid (HJ), Brisco (PV), Omari Jackson (LJ) and Lucas Ott (javelin). 

 

CARL JUNCTION GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

The Carl Junction girls won seven events. 

Carl Junction freshman sprinter Sydney Ward won two individual events, the 100-meter dash in 13.01 seconds and the 200 in 27.55.

Bulldogs senior Olivia Vediz won both the long jump (16-8) and the triple jump (34-4.25).

Sloan Uebinger won the 100 hurdles in 18.56 seconds, while Emerson Lundien took first in the pole vault (10-3.5). 

The Bulldogs won the 4×100 relay and took third in both the 4×200 and the 4×400. 

Finishing second in their events were Loren Lee (discus) and Madilyn Olds (javelin), while third-place finishers were Emily Rice (400), Acadia Badgley (PV) and Hannah Cantrell (TJ).

Riley Briggs (800) and Delaney Harris (PV) took fourth in their respective events. 

 

CARL JUNCTION BOYS HIGHLIGHTS

Owen Hensley was the top performer for the CJ boys, as he took second in the pole vault (11-5.75).

Finishing third for the Bulldogs were Colton Talken (200), Jack Lawson (400), Quin Kennedy (HJ), Caleb Graham (PV), Donnie Keith (shot put) and Braxton Dodds (javelin). 

Taking fourth were Tony Stewart (400), Parker Epperson (TJ) and Dylan Robbins (shot put).

The Bulldogs finished second in the 4×200 relay, third in the 4×100 and third in the 4×400.

 

CARTHAGE GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS 

Carthage’s Joey Hettinger won the girls high jump with a leap of 4-11.75. 

The Tigers won the 4×200 relay, with Aven Willis, Sydnee Dudolski, Ashlyn Brust and Lexa Youngblood competing. Willis, Youngblood, Brust and Boyd won the 4×400. The Tigers were second in the 4×100.

Dudolski was the runner-up in the 200, Jaidyn Brunnert finished second in both hurdle races and the triple jump, while Lilly Holmes took second in the shot put and third in the discus.

Taking third for the Tigers were Morelia Reyes-Perez (800), Maggie Boyd (1600), Hettinger (LJ) and Jordan Childs (shot put).

Fourth-place finishers for the CHS girls were Marissa Boyer (100), Trisha Kanas (400), Jenna Wilson (3200), Brunnert (HJ), Millie Templeman (LJ) and Nichols (shot put).

 

CARTHAGE BOYS HIGHLIGHTS

Carthage won three relays on Friday at Carl Junction.

In a solid showing, the Tigers won nine individual events and three relays. 

Luke Gall won the 100-meter dash in 11.9 seconds, Taye Witherspoon took first in the 200 in 25.14 and Miquel Solano crossed the line first in the 800 with a time of 2:04. 

Trenton Yates won the 110 hurdles (17.09) and the triple jump (41-10), while Daryl Martin took first in the 300 hurdles (43.96). 

Micah Lindsey won two events, taking first in the shot put (46-11.5) and the discus (137-3.75), while Zachary Lansford won the javelin with a toss of 149-7. 

The CHS boys won three relays. 

Carthage won the 4×100 relay in 44.47 seconds, with Landen Schrader, Gall, Cooper Jadwin and Aiden Rogers competing. 

The Tigers also won the 4×200 in 1:34, with Schrader, Chris Mejia, Braxton McBride and Jadwin running.

McBride, Solano, Tyler Burt and Schrader won the 4×400 in 3:35. The Tigers took second in the 4×800. 

Finishing second in their individual events were Burt (400), Martin (110 H), Yates (300 H) and Mejia (TJ). 

Taking third were Jadason Davis-Maxey (LJ) and Jackson Hettinger (TJ), while fourth-place finishers were Caleb Fewin (1600, 3200) and Edward Carreto-Martinez (discus).

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: CJ’s Montez sets meet records at PSU invite; Webb City’s Hawkins, Joplin’s Dunn also shine

 

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Competing at the stadium she’ll eventually call home, Carl Junction senior Ally Montez won two events in record-setting fashion at the 33rd annual Jock’s Nitch/PSU Gorilla Relays on Friday at Prentice Gudgen Track on the campus of Pittsburg State University.

A Pittsburg State signee, Montez won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.7 seconds and also crossed the line first in the 300 hurdles in 44.76 seconds. Both times are meet records. 

Montez’s performance led the Carl Junction girls to a fifth place finish in the team standings. 

Fayetteville (Ark.) was the team champion with 149 points, while Owasso (Okla.) took second with 110 points and Nixa was third with 96.

Raymore-Peculiar (75), Carl Junction (60.5) and Webb City (50) rounded out the top six teams. 

There were 25 full teams competing. 

Also for Carl Junction, freshman Sydney Ward took second in two events, the 100-meter dash (12.5) and the 200-meter dash (26.42), while senior Olivia Vediz was the runner-up in the long jump (16-9).

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the 4×100 relay, with Ward, Montez, Vediz and Hannah Cantrell competing. Montez placed fourth in the 200, while Emerson Lundien was seventh in the pole vault.

Like Montez, Webb City senior Riley Hawkins crossed the line first in two events.

A Missouri Southern recruit, Hawkins won the 2000-meter steeplechase in 7:48 and also took first in the 800-meter run in 2:25.

Taking third in their respective events for the Cardinals were Dawsyn Decker (javelin) and Alanna Bundy (steeplechase). Webb City’s Ripley Shanks took fifth in the pole vault, while Abi Street placed sixth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600 and Sami Mancini finished sixth in the shot put.

The Cardinals were seventh in the 4×800 relay, with  Bundy, Izzy Lopez, Sophia Crane and Elliett Capron competing. Webb City’s 4×400 relay team of Hally Philpot, Lopez, Hawkins and Bundy finished eighth.

Leading the way for the Joplin girls was senior distance runner Jennalee Dunn.

A Cornell recruit, Dunn won the 1600-meter run in 5:13.

Other top finishers for the Eagles were Brynn Driver, who took fifth in the 400, and Claire Jasper, who placed eighth in the shot put. 

Joplin’s Phia Vogel, Tatiana Potter, Bailey Owens and Abigayle Lowery finished seventh in the 4×400 relay.

Neosho’s 4×800 relay team of Riley Kemna, Heaven Kivett, Lakyn Prough and Chloe Wood finished fourth in 10:49.

Kemna placed fourth in the 3200 and Wood finished eighth in the 1600.

Carthage’s Joey Hettinger finished sixth in the high jump by clearing 5-1.

The Tigers were eighth in the 4×800 relay, with Morelia Reyes, Jenna Calhoon, Grace Brown and Maggie Boyd competing.

Thomas Jefferson’s Nico Carlson and Samantha Seto finished 10th and 11th in the steeplechase.

Joplin High School was one of nearly 30 teams from four states competing at Pittsburg State University on Friday.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD: Joplin’s Fowler, Webb City’s Smith set meet records at Gorilla Relays

 

PITTSBURG, Kan. — By winning a pair of individual events, one in record-setting fashion, Donovyn Fowler led Joplin to a fifth-place finish at the 33rd annual Jock’s Nitch/PSU Gorilla Relays at Prentice Gudgen Track on a chilly Friday at Pittsburg State University. 

The top five teams were Fayetteville (97.6), Owasso (83), Lee’s Summit West (81.6), Lee’s Summit North (65.5) and Joplin (56). There were nearly 30 full squads from four states competing.

A senior standout, Fowler captured gold in his two signature events, the triple jump and the long jump.

Fowler won the triple jump with a meet record mark of 48 feet, 3 inches. The old record of 46-3 was set in 2010 by Pittsburg’s Keenan Soles. 

An Oklahoma recruit, Fowler recorded the record-setting jump on his fifth attempt.

Fowler also won the long jump with a leap of 23-7.5.

Joplin won three total events at the invite.

The JHS team of Hobbs Campbell, Zaben Barnes, Nicholas Horton and Evan Matlock won the 4×800 relay in 8:10.

Joplin’s Grey Edwards was the runner-up in the 2000-meter steeplechase in 6:45, while Donovahn Watkins placed third in the shot put (54-6.5)

The Eagles placed eighth in the 4×100, with Tayshaun Palmer, Davin Thomas, Luke Vieselmeyer and Fowler competing.

Fowler wasn’t the only local athlete to set a meet record. 

Webb City’s Grayson Smith won the pole vault by clearing 15 feet even, a meet record. The previous mark of 14-11.5 was set in 1991.

Also for the Cardinals, Lucas Ott placed third in the javelin (156-5) and Roman Borboa took fifth in the 1600 (4:29). Finishing seventh for the Cardinals were Billy Wolfe (high jump), Smith (long jump), Nate Miller (discus) and Trey Roets (javelin), while Dupree Jackson (LJ) and Evan Stevens (3200) both finished eighth. 

The Cardinals were sixth in the 4×800, with Borboa, Daunte Smiles, Mason Hedger and Jose Antillon running.

Neosho senior Kaden Cole was the runner-up in the 1600 in 4:22. El Dorado Springs standout Daelen Ackley won the event in a meet record time of 4:19. A Missouri Southern recruit, Cole finished fourth in the 3200 with a time of 9:27. 

Also for the Wildcats, Isaiah Green placed fifth in the triple jump and Jared Siler tied for seventh in the high jump. 

Carthage’s Zach Lansford placed fifth in the javelin (149-11) and teammate Luke Gall finished sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.21 seconds. 

The Tigers were seventh in the 4×400 relay, with Miquel Solano, Tyler Burt, Daryl Martin and Landen Schrader competing.
