COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Glades leads Lions to first win of the season

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Missouri Southern football team got three rushing touchdowns from Nathan Glades and the Lions scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal a 30-13 win on the road at Northeastern State inside Doc Wadley Stadium.

Glades, a Joplin High School product, became the first Lion (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) since Jacob Park to rush for three scores in a game. Ironically, Park did it against these RiverHawks in 2019. Glades finished with 20 carries for 133 yards and three scores, including a long of 56 yards.

Anthodius Ashley rushed 51 yards on 15 carries and a score of his own, while Dawson Herl was 11-for-18 for 148 yards in the air. Akeem Gillmore was 2-for-2 in passing for 45 yards, while Ezekiel Lang had four catches for 84 yards. Chris Boudreaux caught three passes for 68 yards.

Nick Williams continued to be consistent and steady as the senior had four punts for 166 yards, averaging 41.5 yards, including a long of 56 and three inside the 20. Williams hit his only field goal attempt of the evening, a 36-yard try late in the fourth.

Defensively, the Lions were led by Richard Jordan Jr. with 11 tackles. Solomona Fetuao had six tackles and two sacks, while Colton Bass and Avery Bass picked up interceptions. Romel Readus and Kalepo Fiaseu had a sack each.

NSU (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) was led by Jacob Frazier as he went 19-for-28 for 194 yards and a score, but the Lions sacked him four times and picked off a pair of passes.

Southern struck first when Glades went in from one-yard out to put the Lions up 6-0 with seven minutes left in the first quarter. The play was set up by a beautiful halfback pass from Gillmore to Lang that netted 35 yards and put the Lions inside the five-yard line. Southern tried for the two-point conversion but was not successful.

The RiverHawks picked up a field goal from Tyler Crawford, but Glades struck again, this time for 56-yards to put the Lions up 13-3. Crawford hit another field goal, this time from 50-yards out as time was expiring and the halftime score stood Lions 13-6.

Coming out of the halftime break, NSU was the first to score as the RiverHawks drove right down the field and Frazier hit Devin Blayney for 14-yards to tie the score at 13 with 11 minutes left in the third.

The fourth quarter was all Lions. Southern picked up a one-yard touchdown run from Glades, his third of the game, to end a long drive and put the Lions up 20-13. With five minutes left on the clock, Ashley picked up a nine-yard score to make the tally 27-20 Lions.

Williams added a late field goal to make the final tally 30-13. A late interception from Colton Bass sealed the win and led to victory formation.

The Lions outgained NSU 415 to 282, including 191 to 71 on the ground. Southern held the ball for nearly 34 minutes compared to 26 for the RiverHawks. The Lions never trailed in the game.

The Green and Gold will be back at it next weekend as Southern plays host to Central Oklahoma. Kickoff from Fred G. Hughes Stadium is set for 5 pm on Saturday evening.

VOLLEYBALL: Carl Junction outlasts Rogers in five sets for third straight win

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction volleyball found itself in an early-week dog fight against Rogers, Arkansas, with the Bulldogs outlasting the Mountaineers 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 18-25 and 17-15 on Monday for their third straight win this season.

“I thought our kids dug really deep for this win,” Carl Junction coach Cheryl Sharples said. “I know it was probably going to be a tough night because of our community situation, but I thought everyone really dug deep there at the end to find a way to win.”
The fifth set was, in a sense, a microcosm of Carl Junction’s thrilling win in a war of attrition. The Bulldogs found themselves 6-3 early after a four-point service run from Sadie McConnell that included an ace, which ultimately turned into a 9-5 deficit before a sideout and five-point run in service by Jocelyn Brown that included a Destiny Buerge kill and block from Adia Kennedy gave Carl Junction an 11-9 advantage.

The Mountaineers scored the next three points to take a 12-11 lead before CJ jumped back in front with a kill from Kennedy and Buerge to go up 13-12. Both teams traded sideouts for the next points until CJ used back-to-back kills from Kylie Scott to put away the set and the win. Scott scored the last four points for the Bulldogs down the stretch.

“I thought our middles made a really good adjustment, blocking wise, in the fifth set,” Sharples said. “We were kind of struggling with that in the fourth set, so that adjustment of getting the block close helped a lot. I thought we did a pretty good job, once we got on a little bit of a run, of really serving them a little more aggressively, getting them out of system and then taking advantage of the ball we were given. And Kylie came on really strong there at the end.”

The win moves Carl Junction to 3-1 to start the season.

STATS

Scott finished with a team-high 21 kills to go along with 16 digs. Lo Jones had 53 assists and 16 digs, while Buerge had 15 kills, a team-high 25 digs and five aces in service. Sarah Buchele had 19 digs, while Kennedy had eight kills and two blocks.

GAME ACTION

Carl Junction sophomore Karissa Chase winds up for a swing during the Bulldogs’ win over Rogers on Monday. Photo by Shawn Fowler.

Carl Junction played in front for nearly the entire opening game thanks to a four-point run in service by Kylie Scott to build a 10-6 advantage. Karissa Chase had a pair of kills in the run, while Aubreigh Fowler also had a kill.

“The more they grow, those two, (the better we will be as a team),” Sharples said. “Aubreigh is kind of playing out of position, but she is getting better and her offense was really good tonight for us. As those two, and Adia, develop, that is just going to make us that much better.”

Lauryn Heinle used a three-point run capped by a Brooklynn Weaver kill to bring Rogers within two of the lead, 16-14. Dahana Tuomala cut the lead to 20-19 with a kill before a Mountaineers ace tied things up. With Madison Rhea in service late, Rogers scored the final three points on kills from Weaver and Heinle to clinch the first set.

The Bulldogs evened things back up in the second set thanks to a momentum-changing service run by Destiny Buerge, who pushed a 9-7 advantage to 18-7 after scoring nine straight points. She had four aces in the run.

“She really did a great job of hitting her spots, serving aggressively to get them out of system and give us an opportunity to score,” Sharples said. “That was really key. At that point, we just really took control of that set from there.”

CJ held pace in the second set with Buerge getting a kill and Jocelyn Brown serving up an ace to close out the second set with a win.

The Bulldogs and Mountaineers were in another back-and-forth affair all the way through the third set by Scott ripped off the final five points of the match in service to give Carl Junction the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set. Chase had a block and a kill in the run, while Buerge added a kill as well.

Rogers jumped out to a 4-0 advantage to start the fourth game and the Mountaineers never relinquished the lead, forcing a winner-takes-all fifth set on an ace from Olyvia Hall.

UP NEXT

Carl Junction is at McDonald County on Thursday before kicking off Central Ozark Conference play when the Bulldogs host Webb City on Sept. 20.

“This is the kind of battle we need night in and night out to prepare for where we want to be,” Sharples said when asked what the five-set win meant as conference play draws nearer. “It gives us a lot of confidence to pull a win out against a good team with really great hitters and really great athletes.”

VOLLEYBALL: Webb City upends Bentonville in four sets

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Webb City Cardinals won a critical third set after nearly squandering it and then closed out a 3-1 victory (25-22, 22-25, 28-26, 25-13) with a strong fourth set on Monday against the Bentonville (Ark.) Tigers at the Cardinal Dome.

“Too close to the finish to force another set,” Webb City coach Rhonda Lawrence said. “We wanted to make sure that we stepped out there and ended it. We were very intentional on matchups of who was blocking who, giving us a better opportunity. We found their weakness, and we tried to exploit it hard during that fourth set. Obviously, it worked, but they had some unforced errors that helped us out a little bit.

“Proud of the way that we played intentionally. We played under control. We played our guts out, played hard volleyball. Played smart volleyball, too, and that’s what can set your team apart. If we can get to a consistency of doing that, we’ll be tough to beat.”

Webb City improved to 7-2-1 overall entering Tuesday’s road match against Seneca and the Cardinals finished off their Northwest Arkansas portion of the schedule 2-1 against Bentonville West, Rogers Heritage, and Bentonville.

“Northwest Arkansas volleyball is always competitive, and this is actually the first time in the history of Webb City volleyball, since we’ve started playing them, that we’ve beaten Bentonville High School,” Lawrence said. “We’ve beaten Bentonville West several years, but it’s the first time we beat Bentonville, because they’ve always been super-stacked, and they’ve won tons of state championships.”

The Cardinals open Central Ozark Conference play Tuesday, Sept. 20, against Carl Junction and Thursday, Sept. 22, against Willard, both matches on the road.

“It’s the only way to get prepared for the COC,” Lawrence said of playing schools like Bentonville and Bentonville West. “Because our COC volleyball is some of the best in the state of Missouri. That’s the beauty of it.”

Aubree Lassiter led the Cardinals on Monday with 15 kills, Brenda Lawrence and Kate Brownfield combined for another 22 with Lawrence at 12 and Brownfield 10, setter Kyah Sanborn found ways to finish with five, Kirra Long added four, and Jaeli Rutledge had two.

Sanborn had 40 assists and 10 digs, Sophia Crane 24 digs, Brownfield 14 digs, and the team combined for 12 blocks, as well as 48 kills, 68 digs, and 11 service aces.

The Cardinals, in fact, ended both the third and fourth sets on aces.

Webb City returns home Saturday to host a quad with St. Mary’s Colgan, El Dorado Springs, and Nevada visiting the Cardinal Dome.
