SOFTBALL: Joplin sweeps road twinbill to make it nine straight wins

ROGERSVILLE, Mo. — Joplin softball earned wins over Rogersville and West Plains on Saturday for a twinbill sweep on the road.

With the pair of victories, Joplin improves to 15-2 on the season. The Eagles are currently riding a nine-game winning streak and host Republic on Tuesday at the JHS Athletic Complex.

 

JOPLIN 15, ROGERSVILLE 8

Joplin hung crooked numbers up four times against Rogersville on the way to the win.

The Eagles took the lead with a five-run second inning before scoring four more in the third to push the lead to 9-1 after three full. Rogersville plated three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 9-6 with two innings to plate. Joplin scored four runs in the sixth to essentially seal the win before both teams traded two tallies in the seventh inning.

Ava Wolf started and earned the win after allowing one run on two hits, two walks and a strikeout in three innings. Caelyn Bobski allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits, two walks and three strikeouts in four relief innings.

Kalee Gauldin took the loss after allowing 15 runs on 14 hits, 12 walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Joplin finished with nine players recording a hit, with Maria Loum leading the way with four hits, including a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Abby Lowery doubled twice, had a team-high four RI and a run scored, while Bailey Ledford had two hits, including a triple, to go along with a team-high four runs scored and an RBI.

Joplin’s Kirsten McMillen doubled and had two RBI, while Riley Kelly had a hit and drove in one. Ashley Phillips and Jadyn Pankow each had a hit and scored two runs.

Peyton Meadows walked twice and scored twice.

 

JOPLIN 7, WEST PLAINS 2

Joplin and West Plains traded runs early only for the Eagles to ultimately pull away from Zizzers to complete the Saturday sweep.

The Eagles and Zizzers traded single tallies in the first before Joplin scored twice in the top of the second, with West Plains answering back with a run in the bottom. The Eagles closed the game with the rest of the scoring, touching home once in the third, twice in the fifth and once more in the seventh inning.

Jill McDaniel earned the win in the circle for Joplin after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, four walks and eight strikeouts in a complete seven innings of work.

Allyssa Joyner took the loss for the Zizzers after allowing seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits and two strikeouts in seven innings.

Kelly picked up an RBI for Joplin in the first inning when she doubled to right field to score Lowery. West Plains tied the game in the bottom half with a run scoring on an error.

McDaniel helped her own cause in the second inning with an RBI double right before another run scored on a groundout by Bailey Ledford later in the inning.

The Zizzers cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second, but that would be as close as they would get to the lead. Joplin’s Izzy Yust singled home Lowery in the third inning and Libby Munn hit her fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning with a two-run shot to left. Kelly picked up another RBI in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Lowery and Yust each doubled and had three hits at the plate, with Lowery scoring three times and Yust scoring once and driving in one. Munn homered on the way to two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Ledford had a hit and drove in a run.

VOLLEYBALL: Webb City takes 2nd at Hillcrest tourney

The Webb City High School volleyball team settled for the runner-up plaque at the Hillcrest Slamfest on Saturday.

The Cardinals went 4-1-1 at the event, falling to Lebanon in the championship match.

In pool play, Webb City defeated Waynesville 25-9, 25-12, split two sets with Camdenton (25-12, 23-25), beat Willard 25-18, 25-19 and edged Hillcrest 25-22, 25-23.

In bracket play, Webb City topped Republic 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 before Lebanon defeated the Cardinals 25-21, 25-23 for the tourney championship. 

For the tourney, Kate Brownfield recorded 39 kills, while Brenda Lawrence added 34 kills. Aubree Lassiter had 33 kills, while Jaeli Rutledge contributed 15 kills. 

Kyah Sanborn handed out 114 assists from the setter position.

Sophia Crane had a team-high 72 digs, while Brownfield had 30 digs. Jenna Noel added 28 digs, while Lawrence had 24 digs and Sanborn added 22 digs.

Noel and Brownfield served seven aces apiece. Lassiter had six blocks and Rutledge added five blocks.

Webb City (6-2-1) hosts Bentonville on Monday night inside the Cardinal Dome. 

CROSS COUNTRY: Parrigon leads Warriors at Father Tolton invite

COLUMBIA, Mo. — In a race that featured 139 runners, McAuley Catholic’s Michael Parrigon finished fifth in the boys division at the Father Tolton Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

A sophomore, Parrigon crossed the finish line at 17 minutes, 37 seconds.

The top four finishers were Father Tolton’s Quentin Hermann (16:51), Calvary Lutheran’s Kyle Hagemeyer (16:58), Father Tolton’s John Glaude (17:27) and Centralia’s J.R. Lesher (17:33).

Also for the Warriors, freshman Trae Veer finished 29th in 19:33, senior Phillip Motazedi was 30th in 19:34, senior Joe Staton finished 34th in 19:47 and senior Drew Zeb placed 38th in 20:05.

Freshman Alex Bohachick (57th) and senior Kable Reichardt (70th) also competed for McAuley.

McAuley’s boys finished third in the team standings with 123 points.

Father Tolton (31) and Centralia (76) were the top two teams. There were 13 full squads competing.

“The Father Tolton Invitational was a great experience,” Warriors coach Andy Youngworth said. “It simulates a state trip. We appreciate the administrative team letting us take these trips.

“Michael earned a fifth-place medal,” Youngworth added. “32 seconds between our second and fifth runner is a great improvement. The team has been battling some illness, but I thought we competed well and took third place against a tough field of Class 2 and Class 3 schools.”

For the McAuley girls, junior Kendall Ramsey finished 17th with a time of 22:26.

Junior Miriam Kramer (100th) and freshmen Brooke Righter (103rd) and Samantha Perrin (104th) also competed for the McAuley girls.

“Kendall ran a tough race,” Youngworth said. “She a lot of on her plate with volleyball and cross country, but she does a good job of balancing both sports. Our younger girls continue to improve and are starting to figure out what needs to be done to get better.”

Father Tolton’s Elyse Wilmes won the girls race in 18:46. There were 117 runners in the girls race, with 10 full teams.

Father Tolton (35) and Centralia (77) were the top two girls teams.
