Last week: Carl Junction lost to Webb City 28-14, Neosho lost to Nixa 51-0.

Last year: Carl Junction defeated Neosho 17-6.

OUTLOOK: Coming off their best performance of the season, the Carl Junction Bulldogs will look to take the next step in Week 6. Carl Junction QB Alex Baker completed 22 passes for 244 yards last week against Webb City, with Cole Stewart and Noah Southern his top targets. Brady Sims is CJ’s leading rusher. Sims ran 22 times for 93 yards last week. Neosho has failed to score in three of five games this season. The Wildcats were limited to just 99 yard of offense last week, 88 rushing and 11 passing. After being shut out last week, Neosho is now tasked with facing a Carl Junction defense that held Webb City to its lowest scoring output of the season, as the Bulldogs gave up just one second-half score last Friday. Quarterback Logan Whetzell and running back Talon Mitchell lead Neosho’s offense. Neosho is celebrating Homecoming.

PREP FOOTBALL WEEK 6: WEBB CITY AT BRANSON

WEBB CITY AT BRANSON

Records: Webb City 4-1, Branson 2-3.

Last week: Webb City beat Carl Junction 28-14, Branson lost at Carthage 33-10.

Last year: Webb City defeated Branson 42-0.

OUTLOOK: Webb City has outscored its opponents 200-93 this season, while Branson has been outscored 136-102. The Pirates own wins over Carl Junction (21-20) and Neosho (49-15), with losses to Nixa (42-6), Ozark (26-16) and Carthage last Friday. 

Branson’s spread offense averages 155 passing yards and 106 rushing yards per game. Tristan Pierce has completed 48 passes for 697 yards this season, with  Brady Blackwell and Ethan Jones the top receivers. Blackwell has 461 receiving yards and five touchdowns, while Jones has 197 yards. Pierce passed for 281 yards against Neosho, with 203 yards going to Blackwell. Cristian Berumen has racked up 338 rushing yards with five scores. He ran for 112 yards on 13 carries with one score last Friday. Berumen also knocked in a field goal last week.

Webb City’s Devrin Weathers has rushed for 753 yards (150 per game) and has scored 13 touchdowns, while Cade Wilson has recorded 285 rushing yards with six scores, including three last Friday. Cole Gayman has passed for 268 yards with four touchdowns and also ran for 263 yards and two scores. Mekhi Garrard and Cohl Vaden have two TD receptions apiece. Lucas Ott (42), Treghan Parker (29) and Brayden Hollingsworth (28) are the team’s leading tacklers. Hollingsworth has three sacks and Parker has two interceptions.

Webb City is currently ranked second in Class 5 by the Missouri Media. These two teams are both in Class 5 District 6.

PREP FOOTBALL WEEK 6: CARTHAGE AT WILLARD

RECORDS: Carthage 4-0, Willard 1-4

LAST WEEK: Carthage 33, Branson 10; Willard 32, Joplin 20

LAST YEAR: Carthage 35-14

OUTLOOK: Carthage picked up 344 yards of offense last week, which is the fourth time they have gained over 300 yards of offense this season in their first game back in action after being forced to cancel their Week 4 contest with Webb City due to COVID concerns.  Quarterback Patrick Carlton rushed for 131 yards and finished with three touchdowns, while running back Luke Gall rushed for 137 yards and two scores. 

Willard is coming off their first win of the season, where Willard’s Owen Bushnell carried the ball 28 times for 142 yards and touchdown, while Tyler Janes completed 7-of-10 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. He carried the ball 18 times for 40 yards.

PREP FOOTBALL WEEK 6: REPUBLIC AT JOPLIN

RECORDS: Joplin 2-3, Republic 2-3

LAST WEEK: Willard 32, Joplin 20; Ozark 35, Republic 28

LAST YEAR: Joplin 55-7

OUTLOOK: Joplin is coming off a loss against then-winless Willard. In the defeat, senior running back Nathan Glades did not play with a knee sprain. Quarterback Always Wright completed 17-of-25 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Freshman running back Quinton Renfro rushed 17 times for 130 yards and a touchdown in his varsity debut. Wideout Trayshawn Thomas caught seven passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, while Keaton Renfro caught five passes for 51 yards.

Republic’s Gavyn Beckner completed 12-of-17 passes for 148 yards and an interception, while Avery Moody carried the ball 19 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Sterling picked up 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Golf: Led by Bryant’s runner-up finish, Carthage takes second at COC tourney

NIXA, Mo. — Led by Hailey Bryant’s runner-up showing, the Carthage High School girls golf team finished second in the team standings at the Central Ozark Conference girls golf tournament on Thursday at Fremont Hills Country Club.

With four of the top eight scores, Ozark captured the team championship. Ozark finished with a team score of 354, while Carthage was second with a 379 and Nixa finished third with a 397.
Ozark’s Elizabeth Freeman was the individual conference champion with a 7-over-par 78.
Carthage’s Bryant placed second with an 81, while Nixa’s Mia Farrar took third with an 87 and Republic’s Clara Fronabarger was fourth with a 90.
Ozark’s Maddie Greenlee and Katie Marshall tied for fifth with scores of 91, while Carthage’s Rylee Scott placed seventh with a 92.
Ozark’s Georgia Fraser carded 94 and was eighth, while Webb City’s Laya McAllister finished ninth with a 95 and Republic’s Regan Holmes took 10th (98).
Webb City’s Sarah Oathout and Joplin’s Sophia Schwartz both finished just outside the top 10 with identical scores of 99.
Republic (426), Webb City (433) and Joplin (436) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the team standings.
Willard (438), Branson (443) and Carl Junction (460) rounded out the team standings.
Area teams will compete at their respective district tournaments on Monday.

Tennis: Joplin’s No. 1 doubles team wins COC title

Joplin’s duo of Astrid Cardenas and Emma Watts won the No. 1 doubles bracket at the Central Ozark Conference girls tennis tournament on Wednesday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
The Eagles defeated Republic’s Sedalia Shumaker and Morgan Lewis 8-0 in the championship match.

Cardenas-Watts beat Nixa’s Megan Brassard-Olivia Engelman in the semifinals after topping Carthage’s Lucy Butler-Katie Barton in the quarterfinals.
Cardenas and Watts had both missed recent duals, but the pair took care of business on Wednesday.
“Astrid’s coming back from an injury, she hasn’t played a lot and she’s only playing doubles right now,” Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. “Emma missed some matches because of an illness. But they won their matches handily.”
Joplin’s No. 2 doubles team of Jensen Vowels and Lauren Laird finished third in their bracket.
“We came home with medalists in two divisions and that’s always pretty good,” Williams said. “I know that’s pretty gratifying for the girls. Coach (Richard) Perry and I were real proud of what the kids did today.”
Vowels-Laird beat Ozark’s Savannah Goodwin-Isabella Montileone in the first round before falling to Republic’s Abigail McCord-Wrigley Cook. The Eagles defeated Webb City’s Taylor Yockey-Delaney Duke before beating Branson’s Macy Scott-Madelyn Faria 8-3 for third-place.
Kennedy Schwartz competed at No. 1 singles for Joplin, while Cloey Blank was the team’s entrant at No. 2 singles.

Webb City’s Kirsalyn Hood defeated Carthage’s Kianna Yates 6-2 for third-place at No. 2 singles. Webb City had Rachel Drum at No. 1 singles and Kinzlea Smith-Danecca Heffren at No. 1 doubles.
Carl Junction featured Nicole Sherwood at No. 1 singles, Mariah Barnett at No. 2 singles, Hannah Clinage-Hope Sponsel at No. 1 doubles and Jenna Besperat-Valeria Alamina-Poor at No. 2 doubles.
Also playing for Carthage were Isabelle Johnston at No. 1 singles and Anayansi Lopez-Rodas-Daniela Marquez at No. 2 doubles.
Neosho featured Michelle Lindsay at No. 1 singles, Claudia Martensen at No. 2 singles, Ana Ramirez-Mariana Anaya at No. 1 doubles and Jasmine Martinez-Lyndsey Doke at No. 2 doubles.
Ozark’s Melissa Peralta was the No. 1 singles champ, beating Republic’s Elsie Crawford 8-4. Nixa’s Anna Martens claimed the No. 2 singles title by defeating Ozark’s Hannah Metcalf 8-4. Republic’s McCord-Cook were the champs of the No. 2 doubles bracket.
Nixa claimed the team championship, with Republic second and Ozark third.
Joplin will host the individual district tourney on Friday.
“Hopefully we’ll get some girls qualified,” Williams said.
