COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Southern drops home match to Washburn

Joplin, Mo. — Alyssa Diaz and Janelle Brehm both posted double-figure kills as the Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a match at home to No. 13 Washburn, three sets to none. Individual set scores were 22-25, 16-25 and 17-25.

Brehm and Diaz paced the Lions (5-10) as Brehm had 10 kills and nine digs to go along with four blocks, while Diaz posted ten kills, and a .444 attack average. Sophie Mader dished out 28 assists and had seven digs, while Abbie Casper had 12 digs. Cassie Walton had seven digs of her own.

Washburn (14-4) was led by Genna Berg with 13 kills and 12 digs.

The Lions and Ichabods were neck-and-neck in the opening set with a pair of tied scores and lead changes. Washburn took control late to take the opening set. The second set was tight until the mid-point mark as there were seven tied scores and three lead changes in the first 14 points, but the Ichabods again took control late. The third set was all Washburn with just two tied scores in the set and zero lead changes.

The Lions had nine team blocks in the match.

Southern will play its final home match this Friday as the Lions play host to Emporia State. First-serve from Young Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
