FOOTBALL: Branson beats Carl Junction in battle of coaching brothers

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — When the clock hit zeroes Friday night in Carl Junction, Bulldogs head coach Todd Hafner and his brother, Branson head coach Aaron Hafner, shared the same feeling.

“I’m glad this game is over,” Aaron Hafner said after the game, “We’re really, really close. Neither one of us were looking forward to this game, I’m going to be honest with you—but at the end of the day, it’s about our kids. It’s not about us.”

“I mean it’s just hard,” CJ coach Todd Hafner said, “It’s hard. I feel terrible for our kids, and I know he feels terrible that I feel terrible. I’m sad for our kids, but it took a well-played game to win. Neither team was going to give this one away.”

The Branson defense stifled Carl Junction all night, spoiling the Bulldogs’ homecoming game 21-7 Friday.

“It was a really physical game. I knew it was going to be,” Aaron Hafner said, “Our kids played really well as far as assignment football, and being physical at the point of attack. When you do that, you have a chance to do some good things.”

After a Carl Junction punt on their first possession of the game, Branson drove 53 yards for a touchdown on its first drive to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Bulldogs were aiming to respond on the ensuing drive, but that series ended with Branson’s Zyere Fair intercepting a pass by CJ QB Dexter Merrell inside the 5-yard line and keeping the score at 7-0 Pirates heading to the second quarter.

Carl Junction found their first points in the second quarter, with a clutch throw from Merrell to WR Jett Mills. Merrell connected with Mills in the end zone on fourth-down-and-3 from the 15 to knot the score at 7s with less than eight minutes remaining until halftime.

Branson quickly found its way into the red zone on the next drive, but Carl Junction’s Aidan Beachner recovered a Pirate fumble to halt the drive and give the home team their first chance to take the lead.

The Bulldogs put together a solid drive following the turnover but ultimately turned it over on downs deep in Branson territory to keep the game tied 7-7 at the break.

Branson dipped into the bag of tricks late in the third. On fourth-down-and-5 from the Carl Junction 34-yard line, QB Luke McCormick tossed it out to RB Gage Depee, who pulled up and threw to a wide open WR Teagan Asbury behind the defense for a 34-yard touchdown strike.

“We didn’t want to kick a field goal in that spot and we didn’t want to punt,” Aaron Hafner said of the play call, “Our kids executed, and obviously, that was a big play in the game.”

After a missed PAT, the Pirates were back in front 13-7 going to the final period

Early in the fourth quarter, Branson added to its leads with another touchdown—this one on the ground. Javen Finkbone scored from 8 yards away and the Pirates converted on a 2-point try to push the lead to 21-7 with 8:46 remaining in the game.

Carl Junction had a chance to pull within one score on their next drive but Branson stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down inside the 10, with a pass from Merrell to Jaxton Wobken being ruled incomplete in the end zone.

“Offensively, we weren’t great tonight. We really weren’t,” Todd Hafner said, “We missed a couple open plays. I don’t want to take anything away from Branson, but I don’t think we executed well on offense tonight.”

The Pirates took over possession and ran out the clock to secure the 14-point victory.

Branson (2-3) hosts Neosho, while Carl Junction (1-4) hits the road for a COC matchup against Nixa.

“Todd and I are ready to move forward with our seasons,” Aaron Hafner said, “They have a nice ball club. He’s done a heck of a job in year one. They’re not playing like a team that’s in year one under a new head coach. I’m looking forward to watching them and rooting for them the rest of the season.”

FOOTBALL: Joplin rolls past Branson in opener behind breakout game from sophomore Davin Thomas

If you weren’t familiar with sophomore Davin Thomas’ name before Joplin squared off against Branson to open the 2022 regular season, you certainly knew his name by the time the clock expired in the fourth quarter.

Joplin football has produced a number of athletes over the last several seasons capable of the big play, and Thomas looked like another dangerous addition to the Eagles’ offense after accumulating a pair of touchdowns to go along with 116 yards receiving on five catches, all coming in the first half, to help lead Joplin past Branson 34-3 on Friday at Junge Field.

“He definitely has the speed and athleticism to be a big-play guy,” Joplin coach Curtis Jasper said. “With sophomores, you just never know how they will react the first time on the big stage. But, he made some outstanding plays and it’s nice that we can count on him.”

In total, Joplin’s offense had five scoring drives while gaining 441 yards on 49 plays, but also had a pair of turnovers.

“Offensively, the thing I was most proud of was our perimeter blocking,” Jasper said. “We return WRs Terrance (Gibson) and Aidan (Sampson), but we also had some guys like Davin who were fairly new playing and they did a good job, too.”

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles’ defense was dominant. Joplin forced Branson into two turnovers while limiting the Pirates to three points, 191 yards on 45 plays, pitching a second-half shutout in the process.

“I can’t say enough about the defense,” Jasper said. “We replaced nine of 11 and they just did an amazing job tonight. And it was a bunch of guys rotating in. We didn’t have 11 guys playing the entire game. There were a lot of players who saw action tonight and I feel really good about that.”

GAME ACTION

After a fumble on a quarterback-running back exchange on its first possession, Joplin’s offense found some life the second time with the ball. On the second play of the series, looking at a second-down and 3 yards, junior QB Hobbs Gooch found Thomas in the far flat, with Thomas running past everyone up the sideline on the way to a 76-yard touchdown, the first of his varsity career, with 5:10 left to play in the first quarter.

Joplin added to their lead after the defense forced the Pirates in a three-and-out punt situation. On the fourth play of the third series on offense, Joplin junior RB Quin Renfro broke off a 13-yard run to set himself up for a 2-yard touchdown to push the lead to 14-0 with 1:55 left in the first quarter.

“I was really pleased with the offensive line in the first half,” Jasper said. “They did a really good job of opening holes and the running backs did a good job of hitting them.”

The Eagles were driving into Branson territory after forcing another punt before Gooch was picked inside the red zone for Joplin’s second turnover of the game at the start of the quarter.

The turnover didn’t swing the momentum, as the Eagle defense again got a quick stop and the offense capitalized with Gooch finding senior RB Drew VanGilder in the flat, with VanGilder making a man miss before barreling his way into the endzone for paydirt with 8:26 left in the first half to stretch the margin to 21-0.

Joplin’s defense gave possession back to the offense shortly later when senior LB Draven VanGilder, who finished with 16 tackle sin the win, recovered a fumble by Branson.

The Eagles made the most of the turnover, with Thomas finding the endzone for the second time in the game after hauling in a 13-yard pass from Gooch with 5:40 left in the first half to vault Joplin to a 27-0 lead.

Branson got on the board just before the two-minute mark of the second quarter when sophomore Dane Efird connected on a 26-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 27-3. The kick was set up by a 51-yard run from RB Cade Grimm.

Joplin’s defense came up with a turnover with the Pirates looking at first-down and goal from the 10-yard line when junior LB Jonathan Williams dove on a bad snap to give the offense the ball back.

Joplin got the first points of the second half when Gooch flipped a pass to Terrance Gibson, who burst through the hole, fought off a tackle and sprinted to the endzone for a 64-yard touchdown with 47.9 seconds left in the third quarter to push the lead to 34-3.

“I haven’t ran that fast in a minute,” Gibson said with a smile. “The coaches have been pushing us hard in the weight room, and I am lining up with guys I want to see succeed. If I am going to be a leader on this team for them, I need to work hard to make sure the underclassmen can look up to me.”

BASEBALL: Joplin rallies early to beat Branson 6-2; Eagles perfect in COC play

Joplin fell in an early hole only to answer back quickly with a crooked number on the way to a 6-2 win over Branson in Central Ozark Conference action on Thursday at the JHS Athletic Complex.

The Pirates (11-5, 1-2 COC) plated two runs in the top of the first inning only to see the Eagles rally with four runs coming home on two outs in the bottom half of the inning to take control. Joplin added a pair of insurance runs in the third inning to build a four-run lead on the way to the conference win.

“It was a grinder kind of a win,” Joplin coach Kyle Wolf said. “You know when you play those guys, they are going to play hard and do things the right way. So, you have to grind one out and that is how I would describe this one. When we needed a big hit or to make a big pitch, we found a way to get it done. … To come out and put up four runs to answer in that situation was huge after we fell behind.”

With the win, Joplin improves to 8-7, 3-0 in Central Ozark Conference play. Joplin hits the road for a matchup against Pittsburg, Kansas, on Saturday at Jaycee Ballpark.

“We have a tough one on Saturday against Pittsburg and then we roll back in COC action next week with Carthage on Tuesday,” Wolf said. “It is just a matter of showing up at the yard everyday ready to compete. We just have to continue to learn from things throughout the course of the game and learn from them as the season goes.”

PITCHING

Ethan Guilford earned the complete-game win. He allowed two runs on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

“That seems to be the word of this game, but Ethan grinded,” Wolf said of his starting pitcher’s effort coupled with the team’s play of defense. “He really grinded out some at-bats when maybe he didn’t have his best stuff today, but he found ways to collect outs.

“If we can get them to hit it to center field, it’s probably going to get caught. (Center fielder) Kyler (Stokes) had a great day out there. There were some balls hit pretty well that he went and got. Ethan being gritty on the bump and Kyler going and getting it were game changers today.”

Collin Ross took the loss for Branson after allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits, a walk and two strikeouts in three innings. Blake Green allowed one hit and struck out one in one relief inning, while Andrew Bristow allowed one hit and struck out one in two relief innings.

GAME ACTION

Branson took the momentum in the top of the first inning, plating two runs on three hits in its first at-bat. Ross led off the game with a single to right field before moving to third on a two-base throwing error from Guilford on a pick-off attempt. Two batters later, Carter Jenkins ripped a ball off the wall in left field for an RBI. Andrew Bristow followed with a double to right field to bring home Jenkins for a 2-0 lead.

Like they have so many times this season after giving up a run in the top half of the inning, Joplin answered right back in the bottom half of the first with four runs, all coming with two outs, to lead 4-2.

“They didn’t panic,” Wolf said about his team falling in an early hole and answering back immediately. “Like I told them down the line after the game, whether it’s two strikes or two outs, you’re never out of an inning. Never give up an at-bat or an opportunity because things can snowball pretty quickly and give you a chance. That is kind of what happened there. I am proud of them for piecing some at-bats together and scoring some runs in the first, let alone getting four of them.”

Kyler Stokes started the rally with a two-out double off the wall in left before coming around to score on an RBI single through the left side of the infield from Guilford to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Three batters later with the bases loaded, Tyler Schumann popped a ball up into the sun that fell into no-man’s land behind second base before a high bounce into right field that allowed three runs to touch home to give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.

Joplin added to the lead in the bottom of the third after Stokes led off with a double to the gap in left-center field before touching home two batters later on a one-out double to left by Justin McReynolds to push the advantage to 5-2. Schumann hit a popup into the sun in right field with two outs that found turf and scored McReynolds with two outs to give Joplin a 6-2 lead.

“That was huge,” Wolf said about adding insurance in the third frame. “A four-run lead feels a lot better than a two-run lead. Those two runs there, where we were able to put some at-bats together before Tyler was able to get the big hit down the line. To be able to score two runs in that inning in the middle of the game may have been just as important as the four in the first.”

AT THE PLATE

McReynolds doubled, had three hits, drove in one and scored twice to lead Joplin in the box. Stokes doubled twice on the way to two hits and two runs scored. Schumann had two hits and drove in a team-high three runs.

PREP FOOTBALL: Carl Junction shakes off slow start to beat Branson

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — After an up-an-down first quarter where Carl Junction’s defense held Branson at bay, the Bulldog offense settled into a rhythm in the second quarter on the way to picking up a 33-7 win over the Pirates on Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

Branson (1-2) was forced to punt the opening possession only to see Carl Junction (2-1) muff the return over to the Pirates deep in Bulldog territory.

Carl Junction’s defense forced Branson into a turnover on downs before going three-and-out on its first possession of the game. The Bulldog defense rallied again, as Ayden Bard came up with an interception and returned it 35 yards to the house for a touchdown to give Carl Junction a 7-0 lead with 2:04 to play in the first quarter.

Carl Junction opened the game up in the second quarter, getting on the board with an 8-yard touchdown pass from QB Kyler Perry to Shane Diskin with 3:18 to go in the half to make the score 13-0.

With 1:50 left in the half, Branson fumbled deep in their own territory, setting up a Perry 12-yard touchdown pass to Dexter Merrell to make the score 20-0.

After a 50-yard return on the kickoff to start the second half, Perry hit Bard on a deep pass on the first play from scrimmage to set up first and goal on the Pirate 5. Carl Junction’s Tony Stewart rumbled in from 2 yards out with 10:31 to go in the third to extend the lead to 26-0.

A few minutes later, Carter Jenkins got Branson on the scoreboard with a pick-6 with 8:15 to go in the third to trim CJ’s lead to 26-7.

With 3:06 to go in the game, an 8-yard touchdown run by Stewart put the final cap on the game, bringing the score to 33-7.
