PREP SOFTBALL: Webb City upends Republic on Senior Night

WEBB CITY, Mo. — On the night the program’s nine seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program, Webb City earned a 6-2 win over Republic on Thursday in a Central Ozark Conference softball matchup.

Webb City is now 12-9 and 5-3 in the COC, while Republic fell to 13-8 and 4-3 in the conference.  

The Cardinals scored once in the second when Kaylyn Gilbert singled and came home on a squeeze bunt by Ripley Shanks. 

Webb City extended its lead in the third.

Morgan Brannon was hit by a pitch and later scored when Hannah Wells smacked an RBI single up the middle. 

Gilbert reached on an error before Emma Welch delivered an RBI double to right-center.

Gilbert scored on Shanks’ run-scoring groundout, giving the hosts a 4-0 cushion. 

The Cardinals added two insurance runs in the sixth when Peyton Hawkins delivered a two-run single, scoring Sydney Strickland and Rylynn McFarland.

The Tigers plated two runs in the seventh before the final out was recorded. 

Gilbert was the lone Cardinal with two hits, while Hawkins and Shanks drove in two runs apiece. 

Hawkins was the winning pitcher. She went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on two hits and six walks while striking out two. Laney Taylor recorded the final two outs, striking out both batters. 

Republic’s Mara Lakey was charged with the loss. She gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out one. 

Lakey and Ella Young had Republic’s lone hits.

Webb City is scheduled to compete at the Springfield Invitational this weekend.
