CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Competing against stellar competition, the Webb City Cardinals took third place at the Cape Rock Invitational swim meet in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.
“We are pretty thrilled with this one,” Webb City coach Shawn Klosterman said. “Some of the teams there are traditional powerhouses at the state level.”
In a field of 12 teams, Notre Dame took first with 372 points. Rock Bridge took second with 313 and Webb City was third with 234.
Webb City’s Carson Forcum won the 1-meter diving competition with a finals score of 337.15. Teammate Eric Keeling was fourth (247.5).
In swimming events, Webb City finished fifth in the 200-yard medley relay, with Judah Ritchie, Micah Brouwer, Emiliano Vasquez and Ethan Shipley competing.
The Cardinals were seventh in the 200 freestyle relay, with Zion Wood, Cody Herndon, Aiden Patterson and Steve Kenlee swimming. Webb City also finished seventh in the 400 free relay, with Vasquez, Shipley, Brouwer and Steve Kenlee competing.
Webb City had a number of individuals finish in the top 10 of their respective events.
Ritchie finished fifth in the 100 backstroke, Brouwer placed seventh in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, while Steve Kenlee was seventh in the 500 freestyle.
Wood took eighth in the breaststroke, Shipley placed ninth in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 free, while Vasquez was 10th in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 50 free.
Also for the Cardinals, Jonathan Kenlee took 11th in the backstroke and 12th in the butterfly, Lucas Lowery was 12th in the 500 free and Herndon was 13th in the 100 free.
Klosterman noted the team is off to a solid start to the 2020 season, as the Cardinals took second at Joplin’s outdoor invite and are 5-0 in duals.
The Cardinals will compete at Monett on Saturday.
