LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Seventh-seeded Joplin suffered a season-ending 5-1 loss to second-seeded Lee’s Summit on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3 District 6 team tournament.

“We played a competitive match against a high-ranked school in the district,” Joplin coach Aaron Stump said. “Even when our guys were behind, they did not give up and played better than the game counts represent.”

Lee’s Summit won all three doubles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Samuel Lintz and Jaxson Holman defeated Joplin’s Adam Badr and Josiah Hazlewood 8-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Diaa Amellal and Carter Boehm beat Michael Mancipe and Hunter Merkley 8-2 and Grant Wasko-Braeden Curless defeated Leif Garrity-Oscar Kienzle 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Joplin’s Badr defeated Lintz 6-0, 6-0.

“Adam had a dominant singles victory,” Stump said. “His serves were spot on, he positioned the ball well, and he closed out points effectively throughout the match.”

In completed singles matches, Lee’s Summit’s Carter Boehm beat Kienzle 6-0, 6-1 and Mason Boehm defeated Roman Venturella 6-0, 6-0.

The match concluded when Lee’s Summit reached five wins.

Hazlewood and Garrity’s singles matches were not completed.

Garrity dropped the first set 6-1 but won the second set 6-4 against Wasko.

“Leif and Grant split sets and were in a 10-point super tie-breaker to determine the winner of the match,” Stump noted. “Leif started out behind but really turned things around once the second set hit. He was able to extend the points and place his shots well to come back from a one-set deficit.”

In other action, fourth-seeded Lee’s Summit North beat fifth-seeded Carthage 5-2 and third-seeded Lee’s Summit West topped sixth-seeded Raymore-Peculiar 5-0.
