SOFTBALL: Elder’s strong start leads Carthage past Ozark

OZARK, Mo. — Carthage rode a dazzling performance in the circle by Jensyn Elder on the way to a 2-0 win over Ozark on Thursday.

Elder dazzled with a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts over seven innings.

Jordan Foley took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, over seven innings of work. She gave up seven hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out two.

Carthage (12-8) broke the scoreless tie with Ozark (11-11) in the top of the fourth after Natalie Rodriguez started things off with a single to right before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Landry Cochran. Rodriguez moved to third on a groundout by Makayla Jennings. Rodriguez came around to score when Jordyn Jones reached on an error on a ground ball to third to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.

Carthage added insurance in the top of the sixth after Cochran reached on a single to center to lead off the inning. After moving to second on a sac bunt from Jennings, Cochran went to third on a single to center by Jones. Lauren Haws followed with an RBI single to right field to score Cochran and push the lead to 2-0.

STATS

Rodriguez and Haws led Carthage with two hits each. Cochran, Jones and Presley Probert all had hits.

Carthage hosts Monett on Monday.
