CROSS COUNTRY: Joplin boys win Ray-Pec invite; Dunn leads JHS girls

With three finishers in the top seven, the Joplin High School boys cross country team won the Raymore-Peculiar Invitational on Saturday.

Competing in the large school division, the Eagles finished with a team score of 54. Oak Park was a distant second with 109 and Staley finished third with a team score of 110. There were 15 full squads in attendance.

Joplin’s Hobbs Campbell finished second overall with a time of 16 minutes, 7 seconds. Grain Valley’s Carson Hill took first in 16:06.

Also for the Eagles, Evan Matlock finished fifth in 16:34, Ian Horton was seventh in 16:46, Nicholas Horton placed 13th in 17 minutes, Zaben Barnes finished 27th in 17:43 and Parker Durham was 73rd (19:19) 

Joplin’s girls finished seventh in the team standings with 219 points. Finishing ahead of the Eagles were St. Teresa’s Academy (52), Raymore-Peculiar (56), Nixa (125), Grain Valley (147), Blue Springs (153) and Kearney (176). 

Joplin senior Jennalee Dunn crossed the line fourth with a time of 19:53. The top three finishers were St. Teresa’s Amelia Arrieta (18:31), Nixa’s Alicen Ashley (19:18) and Ray-Pec’s Ashlyn Smith (19:40). 

Joplin’s Allie Keizer finished 26th in 21:14.

Also competing for the Eagles were Sage Mitchell (51st), Mairi Beranek (66th), Meridyth Mai (76th), Jackaline Triplett (81st) and Cylee Gilreath (98th). 

Joplin’s cross country teams will compete at the Southern Stampede on Saturday at MSSU.
