MINK LEAGUE: Nevada sweeps twinbill from Joplin

NEVADA, Mo. — Joplin suffered a pair of road losses to Nevada on Wednesday night in MINK League action.

The Outlaws took the initial lead in the first game only to lose it in the face of a seventh inning rally by Nevada. Joplin trailed early throughout the second game and Nevada went home with a twinbill sweep with a victory in the nightcap.

 

NEVADA 6, JOPLIN 5

ON THE MOUND

Joey Funk earned the win after pitching seven innings and giving up five runs on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts.

Luke Shmedding took the no-decision for Joplin after giving up just two runs in five innings of play with six hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Tyler Benefiel took the loss after pitching one inning in which he gave up four runs on two hits, two walks and a strikeout.

GAME ACTION

Jaret Nelson scored first after stealing third and making it home in the top of the second. Nelson scored again with a homer in the fourth inning.

Nevada tied the score in the fifth inning. Loyd doubled to right field, earning an RBI. London Penland singled to left field, sending one home. Both runs were unearned.

Joplin retook the lead in the top of the seventh. Caden Bressler earned an RBI after reaching first on an error with bases loaded. Garrett Chun doubled to left field, sending two home.

Greyson Miller hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh, earning two RBI. JC Barry singled, sending two home and bringing the score to 6-5..

AT THE PLATE

Chun earned two RBI on two hits. Nelson earned an RBI on two hits and tacked on three runs. Bressler earned an RBI and scored once.

Miller earned two RBI on one hit and two strikeouts, also adding a run. Barry sent two home on three hits. Penland earned an RBI on one hit, one walk, and one strikeout while also tacking on a run. Loyd sent one home on three hits and scored twice.

NEVADA 5, JOPLIN 2

ON THE MOUND

Gage Heyes earned the win for Nevada after giving up two runs in five innings on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Chris Massey took the loss for Joplin after giving up three runs in five innings on two hits, five walks and six strikeouts.

GAME ACTION

Nevada took the lead early with two runs in the bottom of the second. Sam Kwapnioski grounded out to third base and Garrett Dennis grounded to shortstop, each earning an RBI.

The Griffons brought the score to 3-0 in the third inning thanks to a double to left field by London Penland, earning him an RBI.

Joplin earned its first run of the game thanks to a homer by Nelson in the fourth inning. The Outlaws scored again in the fifth inning when Kreuger hit a sacrifice fly out to left field, sending William Kelley home.

Two homers in the bottom of the sixth, hit by Penland and Kwapnioski, secured Nevada’s lead and sent them home with a victory.

AT THE PLATE

Nelson earned one RBI on hit and one strikeout, tacking on a run. Kreuger also earned an RBI.

Penland sent two home on two hits, scoring twice. Kwapnioski earned two RBI on one hit, adding a run. Dennis earned an RBI on one walk and a strikeout. 

ON DECK

Joplin returns home to Joe Becker Stadium for a 7 p.m. game against the Jefferson City Renegades on Thursday night.
