COLLEGE BASEBALL: Stevenson’s ‘Grand Day’ leads Lions over Drury

Freshman catcher Tommy Stevenson had a grand slam and the #9 ranked Missouri Southern baseball team scored 10 unanswered runs as the Lions took out visiting Drury 10-3 today at Warren Turner Field.

Southern (22-6) got a huge day at the plate from Stevenson as he had a grand slam and went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Troy Gagan was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Jrodan Fitzpatrick drove in a pair. Henry Kusiak went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, while Ryan Hunter, Clay Milas and Matt Miller scored a run each.

Cale McCallister started for the Lions and went two innings, striking out three. Jacob Davis threw five innings and struck out three, while allowing just three hits and shutting out the Panthers (9-15) to pick up his first collegiate win and move to 1-0 on the season. Ryan Paschal and Chase Beiter threw the final two innings.

Drury got on the board with a run in the first and two in the second to lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second. Fitzpatrick doubled down the right field line to score Milas and Hunter to get the Lions within a run.

The Lions loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and Stevenson unloaded them as he hit a no-doubter to left center to score Gagan, Miller and Hunter to put Southern up 7-3. Stevenson added an RBI double in the sixth to score Gagan before Kusiak singled up the middle to score Stevenson to make the score 8-3.

The Lions got two runs in the eighth. Gagan scored the first run when he stole home after advancing to third on a dropped third strike and Kusiak homered to make the final tally 10-3.

Southern will be back in action this weekend as the Lions play host to Northeastern State in a three-game set at Warren Turner field beginning Friday.

BOYS TENNIS ROUNDUP: Carthage nips Joplin; Thomas Jefferson continues winning ways; Carl Junction tops Neosho

CARTHAGE 5, JOPLIN 4

Carthage edged Joplin 5-4 on Tuesday in a Central Ozark Conference tennis dual at JHS.

“This was a close matchup overall,” Joplin coach Aaron Stump said. “Take away a few unforced errors and the results could have flipped in our favor. Our doubles teams are doing a nice job communicating.”

At No. 1 doubles, Carthage’s Silas Smith and Ryan Phillips defeated Joplin’s Logan Merkley and Jeffrey Evenson 8-4. In what turned out to be a key match, Carthage’s No. 2 doubles team of Colby Tandy and Charles Snow edged Ben Wardlow and Colin Vermillion 9-7.

“This match could have gone either way,” Stump said. “Take away a couple double-faults and other unforced errors, and we could have won.”

Joplin’s Josh Yarnall and Michael Mancipe defeated Silas Laytham-Danilo Lopez-Gramajo 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

The two teams split the six singles matches for the final margin.

Carthage’s Smith beat Merkley 8-2 at No. 1 singles.

“As our No. 1 singles player, Logan faces tough competition,” Stump commented. “He’s landing his serves and playing longer and longer rallies as he gets more experience in this position.”

Joplin’s Evenson defeated Tandy 8-5 at No. 2 singles.

“Jeffrey had a strong serve today,” Stump noted. “And he hit the ball well.”

The Eagles also had a big win at No. 3 singles, as Wardlow edged Phillips 8-6. Wardlow was down 5-0.

“Ben had a big comeback in his singles match,” Stump told SoMo Sports. “He was down early but was able to build momentum as he settled into the match.”

Joplin’s Yarnall defeated Snow 8-3 at No. 4 singles, but the Tigers won at No. 5 and No. 6.

Laytham topped Mancipe 8-2 and Lopez-Gramajo beat Vermillion 8-4.

PREP BASEBALL: Bulldogs bounce back with win over Tigers in COC affair

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction bounced back from a loss to Carthage in the Bill O’Dell Tournament championship with a 12-2 Central Ozark Conference win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

“I don’t think anyone was complacent after that loss on Friday in the championship game,” Carl Junction coach Jake Stevenson said. “We had a meeting before Monday’s practice and guys seemed hungry and ready to go compete today. I was happy for our guys.”

The Bulldogs (10-3) scored three times in the bottom of the first before the Tigers (4-7) cut the lead to one with two runs in the third. Carl Junction answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom half and peppered crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the back half of the game en route to the five-inning victory.

“CJ is a good team,” Carthage coach Luke Bordewick said. “They are senior heavy, and their leadership is showing through while our inexperience is showing through. … That is kind of the issue we have been having this year.”

ON THE MOUND

Drew Beyer earned the complete-game win after allowing two runs on seven hits, no walks and seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

“Drew is really composed every time he steps on the mound,” Stevenson said. “He gives us a chance to compete and win. I thought he settled in and did a nice job. He looked good.”

Mason Utter took the loss after allowing 11 runs on 13 hits, two walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Zach Geter allowed one run on one hit and a walk in 2/3 of a relief inning.

GAME ACTION

The importance of fundamentals showed up in the first inning for both teams. Carthage’s Wil McCombs led the game off with a single up the middle and the Tigers attempted to sacrifice him over to second with a bunt but failed to do so for the first out of the inning. Kaden Kralicek followed with a single to left to put a pair of runners on base. Back to back strikeouts ended the threat with both runners stranded.

In the bottom half of the inning, Carl Junction’s Carson Johnson led off with a walk before being pushed to second on a sac bunt by Beyer. Noah Southern followed with a deep drive to the gap in right-center field for an RBI triple and Alex Baker added an RBI double to center in the next at-bat. Dylan Eck singled to right for a third straight run-scoring hit to plate Baker and push the lead to 3-0.

“Anytime they step up to the plate, you feel like they have a chance to put a ball in play hard and they did that,” Stevenson said of Southern’s and Baker’s extra-base hits. “I thought those two guys had really good swings, but I thought a lot of guys contributed with some good swings and really good at-bats. That is what you are looking for as a coach.”

“I told them once the inning was over that we had the same exact plan,” Bordewick said. “These COC teams have the same exact plans: get on, get over and get in. They executed (the bunt) and we didn’t, so it was no surprise the score was what it was.”

Carthage broke through in the top of the third, trimming the deficit to one with some two-out magic. With Caden Kabance on third and two away, Kralicek reached on an infield hit to score Kabance. Kralicek stole second and moved to third as the throw found its way into center field. Kanen Vogt lined a two-strike single to center in the next at-bat to score Kralicek and cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-2.

“A couple of guys stuck with the approach and did a good job of executing,” Bordewick said about his team’s approach with two outs.

Carl Junction wasted no time answering back, touching home twice in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back out to three runs, 5-2. After a leadoff double from Southern, Baker singled up the middle for an RBI before moving to second on an errant pickoff throw. Kyler Perry singled with two outs later in the inning to right to bring home Baker.

“That was huge,” Stevenson said of his team’s response on the scoreboard. “The momentum started to shift in their direction. Our guys took it back, ran with it and never looked back. Answering back in that innings was a huge reason the game ended up the way it did.”

The Bulldogs made the score 8-2 with three runs in the fourth thanks in large part to the first five batters reaching base. Johnson highlighted the inning with an RBI single to right, while the Bulldogs added a run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Baker, and Beyer, who walked, scored on a double-play groundout.

Carl Junction ended the game in the fifth with a four-run output. Cole Stewart brought the first run home after reaching on a sac bunt. A balk allowed the second run to score, and Southern ended the game via run rule with one out in the fifth following a two-run single to right field that scored Stewart and Johnson.

“It’s a whatever-it-takes mentality,” Stevenson said of the offensive approach. “If it’s a base hit, a bunt, a ground ball to the right side to move a guy with no outs—whatever it takes to control the bat and do a job. This group just seems to do it.”

IN THE BOX

Johnson was 3-for-3 with a team-high three runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot for CJ. Southern was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Baker had two hits, including a double, to go along with three RBI and two runs scored. Perry, one run scored and one RBI, and Stewart, two runs scored and one RBI, each had two hits.

Kralicek had two hits as well as an RBI and a run scored to lead Carthage. Kabance also had two hits and scored a run.

GIRLS SOCCER: Webb City improves to 10-2 with win over Joplin

Entering the 2021 season, Nick Harmon was confident his Webb City’s girls soccer team had the pieces in place to put together a stellar spring campaign.

Now 12 games into the schedule, it’s safe to say Harmon’s preseason prediction was correct.

Webb City improved to 10-2 on the season with Tuesday’s 8-0 Central Ozark Conference win over Joplin at the JHS athletic complex.

“The ladies played really well tonight,” Harmon said. “We learned a little bit from the (Parkview) tournament last weekend. We learned that we have to start strong and finish strong. We had some positive takeaways coming into this week and they just continue to execute. We want to play to our full potential for the entirety of the half and I think we did a pretty good job of that tonight.”

Harmon noted his Cardinals returned an experienced group entering the spring, as most of the program’s starters two years ago were sophomores and freshmen. And now, that experience is paying dividends.

“Definitely an experienced group coming back,” Harmon said. “We’re very blessed to have the team we have and the players that we have. We didn’t do well at the jamboree and I think that kind of lit a spark. They’ve come back throughout the rest of the season feeling like they have something to prove.”

One night after earning a 2-1 double overtime win at Cassville, Joplin fell to 4-2 on the season.

“We knew Webb was going to be good,” Joplin coach Josh Thompson said. “We watched film on them and we knew what was coming at us. We just were not prepared. It’s been a weird last couple of days and we have a long week ahead of us, so it’s about being mentally tough from this point out. We didn’t know if half of our girls were going to be ready to go today until 10 minutes before we came out.”

Multiple players got into the act for the Cardinals.

Junior forward Anea Bemo scored two goals and had one assist, while senior forward Haven Stanley also scored twice.

Junior Austyn Mickey, senior Mileah Metcalf and senior Sage Cranford all contributed one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Melia Blair scored a goal and sophomore Cree Vaden handed out one assist.

Webb City scored four unanswered goals in the first half, with Metcalf, Stanley, Blair and Bemo recording one goal apiece. Metcalf’s goal came in the third minute of the contest, giving the visitors a lead they would never relinquish.

The Eagles had two shots on-goal in the first half, as the visitors dominated possession.

Scoring second half goals for Webb City were Mickey, Stanley, Bemo and Cranford.

Mickey started the second-half barrage with a goal in the 48th minute, while Stanley scored one minute later. Bemo’s second goal of the night came in the 51st minute.

Cranford’s goal came in the 61st minute and ended the game due to the “run-rule.”

Webb City goalkeeper Delaney Duke made two saves and didn’t have a very busy night.

“She wasn’t involved a whole lot, but we would like it to be that way,” Harmon said. “That’s a good night for us if she’s not having to do a whole lot.”

Joplin goalie Reece Schroer, who was under constant pressure, made eight saves. Thompson gave Schroer credit for doing her best against a solid opponent.

“She had a penalty save in overtime last night, so I think her confidence was high coming into today, but they knew where to place the ball on her,” Thompson said. “(Webb City) did a good job of making us uncomfortable. We didn’t look comfortable for one second.”

Joplin hosts Branson on Thursday, while Webb City hosts Ozark on Thursday.
