GIRLS TENNIS: Host Joplin earns one win at Interstate Championships, Carl Junction wins its bracket

The host Joplin Eagles went 1-4 at the second annual Joplin Interstate Championships girls tennis tournament.

On Friday, Mexico defeated Joplin 5-2 and Lee’s Summit earned a 5-2 win over the Eagles.

On Saturday, Willow Springs defeated Joplin 5-3, while the Eagles earned a 6-2 win over Siloam Springs before a 5-1 setback to Bishop LeBlond concluded the two-day event.

Joplin’s loss to Bishop LeBlond came in the fifth-place match of the Futures Bracket. 

In the victory over Siloam Springs, Joplin won four of five completed singles matches and two of the three doubles matches.

At No. 1 singles, Siloam Springs’ Maribel Riley defeated Joplin’s Mya Ndedi Ntepe 6-2.

Joplin’s Izzy Zamanzadeh defeated Isabella Anglin 6-3, Alex Carson beat Korbyn Briggs 6-3, Zayda Derganc topped Emma Fidler 6-3 and Gwenna Street defeated Ava Howie 6-2. Julia Reyes played No. 5 singles for the Eagles, but her match was not completed. 

In doubles, Ndedi Ntepe and Carson defeated Riley-Anglin 6-3, while the duo of Zamanzadeh and Derganc beat Fidler-Matalie Pharr 6-1 and Lily Compton and Reyes suffered a 7-5 loss to Briggs-Howie.

 

 

CARL JUNCTION GOES 4-1, WINS BRACKET

Carl Junction’s girls tennis team went 4-1 and won their bracket at the Joplin Interstate Championships over the weekend.

On Friday, Lee’s Summit North defeated Carl Junction 5-2, but the Bulldogs defeated Edwardsville No. 2 (Illinois) 5-0. 

On Saturday, Carl Junction defeated Rogersville 5-0, Willard 5-0 and Platte County 5-1.

The victory over Platte County gave Carl Junction the championship of the Challengers Bracket.

 

NOTES: The JIC featured 24 teams and matches were held at Joplin High School, Millennium Family Fitness and the Joplin Athletic Complex.

The top two teams of the Champions Bracket were Edwardsville No. 1 and Grain Valley.

Edwardsville No. 2 defeated Willow Springs 5-0 for the championship of the Futures Bracket.
