PREP SOFTBALL: College Heights puts up 19 runs in win at Verona

An 11-run first inning propelled the College Heights Christian softball team to a 19-0 win over host Verona on Wednesday.

The Cougars improved to 8-1.

The game lasted just three innings, as College Heights erupted for 11 runs in the first inning and then added five in the second and three in the third.

College Heights recorded 15 hits. 

Jayli Johnson, Avery Good and Maddy Colin had three hits apiece, while Layne Jackson and Sarah Painter contributed two hits apiece. 

Johnson hit two home runs, drove in five runs and scored four times, while Kaitlyn Bates had three RBI. Colin and Painter drove in two runs apiece. 

Kloee Williamson, Lauren Ukena, Ari Calandro and Bates all scored two runs apiece in the lopsided win. 

Three pitchers tossed an inning apiece in the circle for the Cougars, who also feature players from McAuley. 

Colin, Johnson and Addie Lawrence combined on a no-hitter. Lawrence struck out three, Colin fanned two and Johnson struck out one. 

Verona’s lone baserunner, Jacy Mendoza, reached on a walk. The Wildcats fell to 5-8. 

Paige Bauer and Meghan Long pitched for Verona and allowed two earned runs apiece, as five errors in the field proved costly. 

College Heights meets Liberal at 5 on Friday at the Jasper Tournament, weather permitting.
