Swimming: Webb City takes fourth at SWMO Championships, area teams compete with region’s best

The Webb City boys swim team finished fourth in the team standings at the Southwest Missouri Championships this past weekend in Springfield.
Cardinals coach Shawn Klosterman noted the meet features 18 teams from both Class 2 and Class 1. A year ago, Webb City finished 11th in the team standings.
“So amazed with what this team has done this year,” Klosterman said.
Webb City’s Zion Wood and Micah Brouwer placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Also for the Cardinals, Ethan Shipley finished seventh in the 200 freestyle, while Brouwer was eighth in the 200 individual medley and Emiliano Vasquez finished eighth in the 100 butterfly.
The Cardinals’ 200 medley relay team of Judah Ritchie, Brouwer, Vasquez and Shipley finished seventh. The 400 freestyle relay was 10th, with Steve Kenlee, Vasquez, Cody Herndon and Shipley competing.
Webb City finished 12th in the 200 freestyle relay, with Kenlee, Wood, Brouwer and Herndon competing.
Webb City’s Carson Forcum and Logan Thibault finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1-meter diving competition.
As far as other local squads, Nevada finished seventh, Monett was ninth, Joplin was 10th and Carthage was 13th.
Nevada’s Ben Hines won the 50 freestyle and also took first in the 100 butterfly. Cody Leung finished third in the 100 breaststroke.
Nevada’s 200 medley relay team finished third, while the 200 freestyle relay took fourth.
Monet’s Matthew Fillinger placed fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 500 free.
Joplin’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ben Wardlow, Zane Newman, Zane Reavley and Jacob Glenn finished fifth.
Joplin’s 200 freestyle relay team of Wardlow, Reavley, Glenn and Newman placed seventh.
Wardlow placed sixth in the 100 freestyle and also took seventh in the 50 freestyle. Newman placed seventh in the 500 freestyle, while Reavley finished ninth in the 200 freestyle. Glenn took 11th in the 200 IM.
Carthage’s Ezekiel Ramirez finished eighth in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the 100 free. Eli Cox took ninth in the 100 butterfly and 10th in the 100 backstroke.
The Tigers were ninth in the 200 medley relay, with Noah Blackford, Gibson Huelat, Cox and Ramirez swimmings.
Carthage finished ninth in the 200 free relay, with Ramirez, Cox, Landon White and Huelate competing.
