COLLEGE HOOPS: Missouri Southern sweeps Rogers State

The Missouri Southern basketball teams swept Rogers State on Saturday inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The MSSU women beat the Hillcats 96-85, while the Lions won the men’s game 88-82.

 

MSSU WOMEN, 96-85

The Lions hit all 10 of their free throw attempts in the final minute to secure the MIAA victory. 

Carley Turnbull led Southern (3-3) with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists. Amaya Johns added 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 6-of-6 free throws, while Neosho product Brooke Stauffer added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Both Johns and Stauffer had career-highs. 

Also for the Lions, Layne Skiles had 16 points and five assists, Madi Stokes contributed five blocks and Megan Jackson had seven assists.

The Lions shot 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point land while also making 81 percent of their free throws. 

Rogers State (1-3) received 16 points from Julie Luna. 

The Lions led 73-53 before the Hillcats pulled within seven at 81-74 with 1:47 remaining. 

Skiles hit a 3-pointer before the Lions went perfect from the charity stripe down the stretch. 

Southern hosts Northwest Missouri at 5:30 on Dec. 17. 

MSSU MEN, 88-82

The 21st-ranked Lions received 30 points from Cam Martin and improved to 4-2.

Martin made 9-of-14 field goal attempts and went 12-for-12 at the foul line. He also had eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. 

Winston Dessesow scored 18, Lawson Jenkins had 14 and Christian Bundy contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. 

The Lions shot 52 percent from the floor and 91 percent from the foul line. The Lions out-rebounded the Hillcats 40-23. 

Jett Sternberger scored 21 points for Rogers State (1-3).

The game featured 11 lead changes and 12 ties. 

Rogers State led 58-54 with 15 minutes to play. The game was tied at 72 when Jenkins made a go-ahead layup. The Lions would lead the rest of the way. 

With time winding down, a huge blocked shot from Bundy started a fast break that led to a pair of free throws from Jenkins. 

Southern hosts Northwest Missouri at 7:30 on Dec. 17.
