BOYS GOLF: Joplin takes first at Horton Smith invite; Eagles have won 4 of 5 events

The Joplin High School boys golf team is off to a stellar start to the spring season. 

How, you ask? The Eagles have now won four out of five tournaments.   

Joplin claimed the team championship at the Horton Smith Invitational on a windy Tuesday at Schifferdecker Golf Course.

After 18 holes of competition, the Eagles finished with a four-person score of 306. Webb City was second with a 316, while Carthage took third with a 322 and Carl Junction finished fourth with a 327.

Joplin’s Harry Satterlee was the individual medalist with a 1-under-par 70. Nevada’s Owen Swearingen was the individual runner-up with a 3-over-par 74.

Also for Jack Pace’s Eagles, Hobbs Campbell carded 78 and Wyatt Satterlee and Gabe De Leon both turned in identical scores of 79 to give JHS four players in the 70s. Joplin’s Ian Surbrugg shot 93.

In five outings, the Eagles have captured four tourney titles to go along with a runner-up finish.

Webb City’s Keegon Dill and Braxten Cahoon both carded 75 to tie for third place, while Josh Howard had a 78, Cooper Forth turned in an 88 and Levi Lassiter had an 89. 

Max Templeman’s 77 led the way for Carthage, finishing fifth overall. Also competing for the Tigers were Britt Coy (80), Owen Derryberry (80), Ben Nicholas (85) and Colson Brust (110). 

Carl Junction’s Jack Spencer and Noah Williams both carded 79, while Jacob Teeter shot 81. Also competing for the Bulldogs were Zach Wrensch (88) and Tommy Walker (94). 

McAuley Catholic’s Evan D’Amour carded 82 and Seneca’s Eli Olson and Jeremy Haase carded 87 and 88, respectively. 

Thomas Jefferson’s top performers were Jake Jarrett and Luke Miller, as both shot 95. College Heights’ top score was a 98 from Logan Decker. 

Also of note, the top 12 finishers at Tuesday’s tourney were invited to compete for the Joplin Horton Smith Cup team that will play Springfield this summer.
