PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Mount Vernon girls knock off Strafford; Carthage teams suffer losses

MOUNT VERNON GIRLS KNOCK OFF STRAFFORD

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — In a signature win, third-seeded Mount Vernon knocked off five-time defending state champion and second-seeded Strafford 54-49 on Tuesday night in a quarterfinal contest of the Pink & White Tournament at Springfield Central High School. 

The win advances the Mountaineers (8-0) into the Pink Division’s semifinals, where they’ll play No. 1 seed Kickapoo at 4 on Wednesday at Parkview High School. Kickapoo hammered Wheatland 90-10.

After leading by one at the end of the third period, Mount Vernon finished strong against perennial-power Strafford, the team that knocked the Mountaineers out of the state playoffs last March. Mount Vernon outscored Strafford 15-11 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. 

Lacy Stokes poured in a season-high 29 points to lead the Mountaineers, who hiked their unblemished record to 8-0. Stokes, a Missouri Southern recruit, scored 16 points in the second half. 

Ellie Johnston added 18 points for Mount Vernon, with 11 of her points coming in the first half. Johnston hit four 3-pointers. Mount Vernon had just seven players available for the game. 

Strafford’s Mattie Walker and Emma Compton scored 13 points apiece and Emma Mullings had 11.

The Mountaineers led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, 27-26 at the half and 39-38 heading into the fourth period. 

 

CARTHAGE GIRLS FALL TO WAYNESVILLE

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Carthage’s girls basketball team suffered a 68-58 loss to Waynesville on Tuesday night at the Pink & White Tournament at Kickapoo High School. 

Hailey Fullerton scored 19 points to lead Carthage (8-4), while Brinna Ream added 18 points. Fullerton made three 3-pointers. Ream made five field goals and hit 7-of-10 free throws. 

Kianna Yates and Katie Crowe contributed six points apiece for Carthage. Raven Probert added five points, Sophie Shannon scored three and Landry Cochran had one point. 

Naudia Evans poured in 33 points to lead Waynesville. Evans is a Grand Canyon University recruit. 

Up 34-29 at the half, Waynesville used a 17-8 third quarter to pull away at 51-37. Carthage outscored Waynesville 21-17 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough. 

Carthage plays Blue Eye at 4:30 on Wednesday at Hillcrest. 

 

CARTHAGE BOYS SUFFER SETBACK TO ROLLA

ROLLA, Mo. — The Carthage boys got down big early and never recovered in a 69-53 setback to host Rolla at the U.S. Bank Holiday Tournament.

Rolla jumped out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back. The Bulldogs led 41-17 at halftime. Carthage trailed 57-37 entering the fourth quarter. 

Patrick Carlton scored 15 points to lead Carthage, while Silas Templeman had 11 points and Max Templeman added 10. 

Carthage’s Justin Ray scored seven points, Caden Kabance had six and Clay Kinder added four. 

Trey Brown scored 18 points for Rolla, while Gage Klossner added 16. 

With the win, Rolla will meet Poplar Bluff in the championship game. Carthage will play Waynesville for third place.
