GIRLS DISTRICT HOOPS: McDonald County wins first district title since ‘15; Mount Vernon, Seneca will meet in district title game

MCDONALD COUNTY 51, ROGERSVILLE 49

ANDERSON, Mo. — The McDonald County Mustangs trailed by two at the end of the third period, but the hosts won the fourth quarter 16-12 to capture the Class 5 District 11 championship on Thursday night. 

McDonald County’s Kristin Penn scored 15 points and Sydney Killion added 14. 

It’s McDonald County’s first district championship in girls basketball since 2015. 

The Mustangs meet Carl Junction in the sectional round on March 10.

 

MOUNT VERNON 57, CASSVILLE 22

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Lacy Stokes scored 26 points and surpassed 2,000 career points as the Mountaineers rolled in a semifinal contest of the Class 4 District 12 tournament. 

Ellie Johnston added 17 points for Mount Vernon. 

The top-seeded Mountaineers will host third-seeded Seneca in the championship game at 1:30 on Saturday. 

 

SENECA 66, AURORA 53

AURORA, Mo. — Aliya Grotjohn poured in 39 points to lead Seneca to the upset victory over the second-seeded Houn’ Dawgs.

Led by Makayla French’s 14 first-half points, Seneca led 31-24 at halftime.

The Indians were up 50-40 at the end of the third quarter and they never relinquished their lead.
