ROUNDUP: Neosho baseball wins Mickey Mantle Classic; CHC softball goes 3-0 at Conway; Joplin distance runners set school records

NEOSHO BASEBALL WINS MICKEY MANTLE CLASSIC

COMMERCE, Okla. — The Neosho Wildcats earned a 3-1 win over Haskell (Okla.) in the championship game of the Mickey Mantle Classic on Saturday morning at Commerce High School.

Kael Smith was the winning pitcher. He allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings while striking out five. 

Wyatt Shadwick tossed a scoreless seventh to earn the save. 

Carter Baslee and Matthew Velasco both went 2-for-3 and drove in one run apiece. Baslee, Shadwick and Quenton Hughes scored one run apiece.

Haskell’s Brady Neal took the loss, but surrendered just two earned runs on six hits in six innings. Lucas King had two of Haskell’s five hits. 

Haymakers fell to 12-3 on the season. 

Neosho (9-3) hosts Republic on Tuesday.

 

COLLEGE HEIGHTS SOFTBALL GOES 3-0 TO WIN CONWAY TOURNAMENT

CONWAY, Mo. — College Heights (with McAuley) earned 5-1 wins against Houston and Hartville before wrapping the Conway Tournament with a 10-3 victory over host Conway on Saturday to finish with a 3-0 record as the champions.

The Cougars improved to 9-2 with the trio of wins.

 

CHC 5, HOUSTON 1

College Heights scored twice in the first and added insurance in the third, fourth and fifth innings on the way to the win over Houston in the opening game for CHC.

Maddy Colin earned the win after allowing one unearned run on three hits, two walks and 12 strikeouts in six innings. 

Aaliyah Walker took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits, five walks and eight strikeouts in six innings.

Kloee Williamson had three hits and scored twice for CHC, while Addie Lawrence had one hit and a team-high three RBI. Kaitlyn Bates and Avery Eminger each had two hits.

 

CHC 5, HARTVILLE 1

College Heights built a 3-1 lead through the first three innings and added insurance late in the win over Hartville.

The Cougars plated two runs in the top of the first inning and added a run in the third before Hartville found the scoreboard with a tally in the last of the frame. CHC added insurance in the fifth and sixth innings.

Colin allowed one run on three hits, a walk and 13 strikeouts in six innings to earn the win for College Heights.

Breyanna Flachsmann took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on 10 hits, a walk and five strikeouts in six innings.

Williamson led CHC at the plate with three hits, including two doubles, and three runs scored. Jayli Johnson doubled, had two hits and scored twice. Colin had two hits and three RBI, while Bates added a pair of hits.

 

CHC 10, CONWAY 3 (4 INNINGS)

College Heights ballooned a 1-0 lead with nine runs touching the plate in the third inning on the way to a win over the Bears to cap the day-long tournament. 

Williamson had a two-run double with Lawrence adding a two-run triple to highlight the nine-run third inning for the Cougars.

Lawrence earned the win in the circle for CHC after allowing three runs on three hits, nine walks and seven strikeouts in four innings.

Williamson had three hits, scored three times and had two RBI. Lawrence had one hit and three RBI. Johnson had a hit, scored twice and drove in one. Colin had one hit, one RBI and one run scored.

 

ROLLA 14, JOPLIN 4

ROGERSVILLE, Mo. — Rolla scored eight runs in the second to fuel a run-rule win over Joplin in six innings in the Hollister/Willard Festival baseball tournament on Saturday.

The Eagles (6-6) opened the first inning with a run before the Bulldogs touched the plate eight times in the second inning to take control. Joplin added two in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Rolla responded both times with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the win.

Davy Watkins earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks and a strikeout in 4 1/3 innings. 

Byler Reither took the loss for Joplin after allowing five runs on one hit, five walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Joe Jasper allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Tyler Duley allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and a walk in one relief inning. 

Brett Montgomery had two hits, two walks, four RBI and scored twice, while Carter Krute had two hits, three RBI and scored twice to lead Rolla. Simon Yoakum had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Isaac Bahr had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Brett Yarger had a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. 

Kyler Stokes had a double, a home run, two RBI and scored twice to lead Joplin. Justin McReynolds had two hits, including a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Jackson Queen had two hits, including a double, and an RBI and Ethan Guilford went 2-for-4.

 

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREP 15, JOPLIN 8

Chaminade hung crooked numbers on the scoreboard four times against Joplin to earn a win in the Hollister/Willard Festival.

The Red Devils plated five runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and two in the third to build a 10-0 lead. Joplin (6-7) added a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning to cut the lead to six. Chaminade scored five times in the seventh inning, with Joplin pushing across four in response. 

Christopher Pelligreen earned the win after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. 

McReynolds took the loss after allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on eight hits on three walks and four strikeouts in three innings. Brady Mails allowed two runs on four hits, a walk and two strikeouts in three relief innings. Alex Isbell allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits, a walk and two strikeouts in one relief inning.

Chase Blair had four hits and three runs scored for Chaminade. Quinn Council and Nicholas Livingston each had two hits.

Stokes doubled twice, scored twice and drove in one for the Eagles. Guilford had two hits and two RBI, while Bodee Carlson had two hits and runs scored.

Joplin hosts Harrisonville on Tuesday.

 

TRACK & FIELD: JOPLIN DISTANCE RUNNERS SET SCHOOL RECORDS

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. —  It was a record-setting day for Joplin High School distance runners Hobbs Campbell and Jennalee Dunn.

Both Campbell and Dunn set school records in the 3200-meter run at the Bill Summa Invitational. 

Campbell crossed the line at 9:19 to finish fifth in the boys event, while Dunn recorded a time of 11:21 to place third in the girls race. 

According to JHS distance coach Dustin Dixon, the previous 3200 records were set in 2002.

Also for the Eagles, Donovahn Watkins won the shot put with a toss of 16.43 meters. Former Joplin Eagle Kaian Roberts-Day of Festus took second with a toss of 14.71 meters.
