PREP BASEBALL: Webb City improves to 9-1 with pair of lopsided wins; Cardinals score 30 runs in two games

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Webb City hiked its record to 9-1 with a pair of convincing victories on Saturday at the Red and Blue Classic at Hillcrest High School.

The Cardinals beat the host Hillcrest Hornets 15-3 in Saturday’s opener and then knocked off Sedalia Smith-Cotton 15-2 later in the day. Both games ended after the fifth inning due to the run rule.

WEBB CITY 15, HILLCREST 3

The Cardinals got the bats going right from the start in this one, as the visitors plated four runs in the first.

Devrin Weathers and Treghan Parker both singled before Matt Woodmansee brought them home with a two-run single to right.

Shane Noel and Aiden Brock both contributed run-scoring singles later in the first frame for an early four-run cushion.

The Hornets scored twice in the bottom half, but the Cardinals added four more runs in the second.

The first tally crossed home on Parker’s RBI groundout.

Woodmansee drew a bases-loaded walk before Noel delivered an RBI triple to center. Noel came home on Cole Gayman’s RBI groundout, making it 8-2.

The Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the second, but Webb City added five runs in a big third inning.

Weathers hit a two-run single to center that allowed Jeremiah Leaming and Eric Fitch to score. Both had reached on base hits.

Woodmansee hit an RBI single to right before Noel smacked his second triple of the game.

Gayman added an RBI single, scoring Noel and giving Webb City a comfortable 13-3 lead.

The Cardinals pushed across two more runs in the fourth, as Cooper Crouch was hit by a pitch and Fitch walked.

Crouch scored when Weathers doubled to right and Fitch came home on Parker’s run-scoring grounder to short.

Webb City had 15 hits in the game.

Noel and Weathers both had big days at the plate, as both went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Woodmansee, Parker and Gayman drove in two runs apiece.

Kaylor Darnell handled the pitching duties. He went all five innings, struck out eight and allowed just four hits to earn the win.

WEBB CITY 15, SMITH-COTTON 2

The Cardinals used two big innings to end the game early, as Webb City scored five runs in the second and seven in the fourth to go with single tallies in the first, third and fifth frames.

Weathers and Noel had three hits apiece, while Parker, Goddard and Fitch contributed two hits apiece.

Noel drove in four runs, while Parker had three RBI. Weathers and Goddard scored three runs apiece.

Fitch went four innings on the mound, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run to earn the win. Leaming pitched a scoreless fifth.

Webb City hosts McDonald County at 4:30 on Monday.
