DISTRICT BASEBALL: McAuley advances past Wheaton in five innings

BILLINGS, Mo. — Third-seeded McAuley Catholic hung crooked numbers on the scoreboard in every inning on the way to an opening-round run-rule win over Wheaton in the Class 1 District 5 on Friday.

The Bulldogs (1-18) took the initial lead with a run in the first inning before the Warriors (10-12) scored twice in the first inning, third and fifth innings, while adding four runs in the second frame and a three spot in the third inning in the five-inning victory.  

McAuley matches up with second-seeded Exeter at 6:15 p.m. on Monday in the district semifinals. 

Trey Martinez earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and a strikeout in three innings. Tripp Miller allowed one unearned run on one hit, two walks and five strikeouts in two innings of relief work.

Hayden Royer took the loss after allowing six runs on one hit, six walks and a strikeout in two innings.

The Warriors scored their first four runs without recording a hit before Rocco-Bazzano Joseph doubled home two runners during the four-run second inning to make the score 6-1.

Joe Staton recorded an RBI single on an infield hit in the third before Bazanno-Joseph picked up another RBI on a groundout to push the lead to 8-2.

Case Richards came up with a bases-loaded, three-run double an inning later to extend the lead to 11-2 through four innings. 

Bazzano-Joseph had a double and three RBI, while Staton had a hit, scored twice and drove in a run. Richards doubled and drove in three, while Kendall Jones had a hit and scored twice. Michael Parrigon doubled and scored a run. Brek Sickman and Chase Gardner combined to score five runs.
