BASEBALL: Webb City earns pair of walk-off wins at Red & Blue Classic; Darnell earns 300th win as head coach

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Webb City Cardinals earned two walk-off wins on Saturday at the Red & Blue Classic.

With late-game heroics in both contests, Webb City defeated Hillcrest 1-0 and Rolla 2-1.

The victory over the Bulldogs gave Webb City coach Flave Darnell a milestone.

Darnell now has exactly 300 wins as a head coach.  Now in his 18th season as a head coach, with 15 at Carl Junction, Darnell entered his third season in charge of the Cardinals with 294 wins.

After a third straight win, the Cardinals are now 6-4.

Webb City went 3-0 at the Red & Blue Classic, beating Parkview 13-3 on Friday before Saturday’s sweep. 

 

WEBB CITY 1, HILLCREST 0

The Cardinals plated the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Cade Wilson was hit by a pitch before he stole second. With two outs, William Hayes made contact and Wilson charged home on an error.

Webb City had five hits in the game, singles by Eric Fitch, Jeremiah Leaming, Kenley Hood, Kaylor Darnell and Wilson. 

Tyler Marbut tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the Hornets to three hits. Marbut struck out five and walked none.

Hillcrest’s Shane Stafford took the loss, scattering five hits and allowing just one unearned run.

 

WEBB CITY 2, ROLLA 1

Fitch came up big against the Bulldogs, as the senior recorded the game-ending hit while also going the distance on the mound. 

The Bulldogs pushed across a run in the second inning on Beno Ballard’s RBI single to right field.

The Cardinals tied it up in the fourth, as Aidan Brock and Kaylor Darnell hit back-to-back doubles, with pinch runner Gavin Stowell scoring the tying run.

It was still 1-1 when the Cardinals came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. 

Kolton Eilenstein singled to start things off before Hayes moved him over with a sac bunt.

Fitch singled to left and Eilenstein was able to score on the play, giving the Cardinals a second straight walk-off win. 

The Cardinals had eight hits. Brock went 3-for-3, while Fitch had two hits. 

On the mound, Fitch went all seven innings and scattered four hits. He walked two, struck out four and gave up just one run. 

Bret Yager had two of Rolla’s four hits.

Jake Fuller was charged with the loss. He gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out four. 

 

UP NEXT: Webb City (6-4) is at McDonald County (6-3) on Monday in a clash between district opponents.
