BASEBALL: Mount Vernon knocks off College Heights

Mount Vernon scored in five of seven innings en route to a 12-1 win over College Heights Christian on Monday in a non-conference prep baseball clash at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Class 4 Mountaineers led 5-0 when they added four runs in the fifth and three more in the top of the seventh. CHC’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh, as Nicholas Brueggemann drove in Bo Sitton.

Mount Vernon’s Tristan Jones struck out seven and gave up just one hit and two walks in three innings on the mound. Payton Jones pitched 3 2/3 innings, striking out six and giving up three hits. Sawyer Anderson recorded the final out. 

Jarrett Zerby had four hits and drove in three runs for the Mountaineers, while Braden Dodson drove in two runs on four hits. 

Brueggemann pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk. Smoke Ezell pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Bruggemann had two hits and an RBI, while Jayce Walker, Kelton Welch, Ezell and Sitton had one hit apiece. 

College Heights (3-9) is at Jasper on Wednesday.
