GIRLS HOOPS: Odaffer named Carl Junction’s new head coach

CARL JUNCTION, Mo.  — Carl Junction High School has announced the appointment of Ryan Odaffer as the new head girls basketball coach.

Previously, Odaffer served as Carl Junction High School’s boys basketball coach from 2008 to 2012.

After stepping out of administration with a return to the classroom, Odaffer’s journey has come full circle as he takes the reins of the girls basketball program.

Odaffer’s coaching experience spans various age groups, and he has also organized multiple skills nights to nurture player development.

Odaffer noted he’s thrilled and ready to dive back into the coaching circle, determined to build on the program’s recent success and propel it to even greater heights.

“I have always had a passion for great basketball, and one way I wanted to give back was to try and develop younger players in the Carl Junction School District,” Odaffer said in a press release. “I had no clue that I would one day get the chance to coach these kids when they got to high school. The timing seemed right, and I am really excited for this upcoming season.”

Stepping into a program with a rich history, Odaffer is well aware of the achievements of his predecessor, Brad Shorter, who led the team to multiple conference and district championships and this year’s state runner-up finish.

“Shorter is a class act and has put this program in amazing shape,” Odaffer said. “My hope is to continue that legacy in the way this program has competed, and the way Coach Shorter carried himself.”

Odaffer’s basketball background is impressive. He began his playing career at Labette County High School in Altamont, Kansas, where he led his team to a state runner-up finish and was honored as the 4A Player of the Year and a top five All-Class/All-State player.

Odaffer then continued his basketball journey at Pittsburg State University from 2000 to 2005.

He was an assistant boys basketball coach in Webb City before taking over the head coaching duties in Carl Junction.

During the current school year, Odaffer had the opportunity to coach his own daughter as the Carl Junction junior high 7th grade coach, stating, “It’s been great to have had the last eight years to watch my own kids play.”

GIRLS SOCCER: Carl Junction honors seniors with 4-0 win over Joplin

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — The Carl Junction Bulldogs scored three second-half goals on their way to a 4-0 win Wednesday over the visiting Joplin Eagles at Bulldog Stadium.

Carl Junction senior forward Hannah Franks netted a hat trick and senior goalkeeper Chrissy Figueroa maintained the shutout with four saves in the second half after a quiet first half offensively for Joplin.

The Bulldogs avoided a three-match losing streak and improved to 18-4 overall and finished Central Ozark Conference play 5-4 entering Thursday’s regular season finale on the road against Springfield Catholic, weather permitting.

“I thought we came out flat,” Carl Junction coach Ed Miller said. “We weren’t making passes, we weren’t moving, and we were just standing. It has something to do with playing a 4 o’clock game instead of an evening game.

“In the second half, we talked about some stuff that we were looking to do, and we figured it out. Hannah had a big night with a hat trick, Hailey (Merwin) got a goal, and Allie (Wrestler) got a couple assists, so overall not too bad. We got a shutout and Chrissy did a great job in goal again. We’re looking forward to districts on Saturday. Of course, we have a game (Thursday) … if we don’t get rained out.”

Franks scored Carl Junction’s lone goal of the first half as the Bulldogs took a majority of their first-half shots in the first 20 minutes of the half.

Franks scored Carl Junction’s second and fourth goals, and junior midfielder Hailey Merwin scored the Bulldogs’ third goal.

The Bulldogs and the Eagles were originally scheduled to play their varsity match Tuesday night, but it was pushed back to Wednesday due to inclement weather that arrived a few minutes before opening kickoff.

The Bulldogs honored their seniors Figueroa, Gracie Shoultz, Franks, Samantha Sims, Jocelyn Brown, Lexi Carpenter, Constance Graham, Mary Parker, Allie Wrestler, and Alyssa Beard, as well as exchange students Michelle Hsu and Mai Abotair, on the field Tuesday in a ceremony before the incoming weather.

Carl Junction got to honor the seniors twice, on consecutive nights.

“It (the weather) messed up our party last night a little bit,” Miller said. “We came back tonight to celebrate with some cookies and some drinks and everything. We let our seniors finish it on the field in their last home game. We got everybody some playing time, and we’re happy with that. It was hot, so we played everybody.

“We’re going to miss them. Four years I’ve been with them. Some of them played a lot of varsity from Day 1 and some played JV and worked their way up to varsity. We’ve got a little bit of a mixture with all our seniors, but they’ve all been a big part of our team. We’re here to celebrate them tonight … but we’re going to miss all 10 of them next year.”

Carl Junction earned the third seed in Class 3 District 7 and the Bulldogs play a district quarterfinal Saturday against Raytown South.

Notre Dame de Sion and St. Michael the Archangel are the top two seeds in a district that’s heavily Kansas City area.

Fifth-seeded Webb City plays tournament host Belton on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Joplin closed out the regular season 5-11 overall and 1-8 COC with the 4-0 loss to Carl Junction on Wednesday.

“Our Thursday game vs. Parkview got cancelled so now we’re just looking at playing Ozark on Saturday and gearing up for trying to do a postseason run,” Joplin coach Josh Thompson said. “We know that we have a tough one in front of us.

“I think heat got us a little bit (Wednesday). First half, we came out soft and second half, we gave them a little bit of room to shoot, but we played a lot better. Even though they had a better second half on the scoreboard, I think we looked better on the field in the second half. We forced their keeper to make some good saves. She had at least one in the upper 90, on a free kick from our used-to-be center back (Cielo Martinez) that’s never taken one on frame in her life. She put one right where it needed to be and their keeper made a great save.”

The Eagles are the seventh seed in Class 4 District 5 and they draw a 17-5 Ozark in the district quarterfinals Saturday in Nixa.

In their match earlier this season on April 20, Ozark scored four goals in the final 10 minutes and 4 seconds before halftime on their way to a 5-0 halftime lead and 8-0 mercy-rule win.

“They’re having a great season,” Thompson said. “We know what we’re up against. We’ve played them before. We played really good first 20 minutes. We just dropped everything out and were able to try and force some opportunities on them. We’ve grown a lot since then, so we’re going to try and be more consistent and hopefully get a surprise opportunity again.”

Carthage has the fifth seed and the Tigers play Springfield Central on Saturday. Springfield Central defeated Carthage 1-0 back on March 29.

Neosho has the eighth seed and the Wildcats draw the formidable top seed Kickapoo, who enters Saturday’s quarterfinal 18-5-1 overall with 10 straight victories.

The Chiefs have won five straight district titles.

BOYS TENNIS: Thomas Jefferson falls in district title match

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thomas Jefferson’s boys tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to Barstow on Wednesday in the championship match of the Class 2 District 7 tournament.

With its first and lone dual loss of the season, Thomas Jefferson finishes 12-1 in team competition.

At No. 1 doubles, Barstow’s Sankeerth Gandhari and George Colombo defeated TJ’s Prithvi Nagarajan and Devan Murali 8-0.

At No. 2 doubles, TJ’s Chengle Qian and Tyler Brouhard beat Liam Groden-Shayan Ahmed 8-3.

Barstow’s No. 3 doubles team of Sanjeev Adma-Aaram Salam edged Jack Goodhue-Sam Li 8-6.

Thomas Jefferson’s Brouhard won his singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Adma.

Barstow’s Gandhari defeated Nagarajan 7-5, 6-0, while Groden beat Qian 6-2, 6-1 and Salam topped Goodhue 6-1, 6-4.

The match ended when Barstow reached five wins, so the two other singles matches were not completed.

Barstow, last year’s third-place finisher in Class 2 and the Class 1 state champion in ’21, advanced to the quarterfinals.

Thomas Jefferson’s Nagarajan will compete at the individual state tournament on May 18 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

DISTRICT SOFTBALL: Jasper knocks off top-seeded Liberal in title game

JASPER, Mo. — A four-run second inning proved to be the difference as second-seeded Jasper knocked off top-seeded Liberal (with Bronaugh) 7-3 on Wednesday in the championship game of the Class 1 District 6 softball tournament.

The game was deadlocked after the first inning before the Eagles pushed across four runs in the second inning.

Neither team scored the rest of the way and the Eagles captured a second straight district title.

Jasper (21-15) now gets a date with Miller (20-5) on May 16 in the quarterfinals. Miller defeated Purdy 10-9 for the District 5 title.

Last year’s Class 1 runner-up, Jasper took an early three-run lead on Shiloh Storm’s first inning bases-clearing triple.

The Bulldogs responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half, as Kyla Porter drew a bases-loaded walk before Laney Simpson hit a game-tying two-run double.

Jasper plated four runs in the second on an RBI single from Emersyn Bass and a three-run double off the bat of Taylor Hinds.

There was no scoring after the second inning.

Liberal threatened in the seventh before the Eagles turned a game-ending double play.

Bass went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Jasper, while Hinds and Storm drove in three runs apiece. Livia Dumm and Brie Haddock scored two runs apiece.

Grace Osborne was the winning pitcher. She went the distance and allowed two earned runs on just two hits. Osborne walked six and struck out nine.

Liberal’s Jordan Goodell took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and seven walks. She struck out nine.

Liberal’s lone two hits of the game were recorded by Simpson.

The Bulldogs went 20-12 this season.
