BASEBALL: College Heights erupts offensively in win over McAuley Catholic

The College Heights Christian Cougars entered Tuesday’s game against Ozark 7 Conference and crosstown rival McAuley Catholic having scored only eight runs in their four previous games, all losses against Clever (3-2), Exeter (4-0), Ash Grove (19-2), and Purdy (19-4).

Granted, to be fair, Purdy and Ash Grove are ranked second and fourth in Class 2, respectively, and Clever is receiving votes in Class 3 in the latest rankings from the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The Cougars snapped their four-game losing streak and brought out their bats in a big way as they surpassed their runs total from their four previous games with an 11-5 win on Tuesday at Joe Becker Stadium, improving to 2-4 overall and 1-1 Ozark 7 on the season.

College Heights erupted for seven runs in the second and pushed across two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings, while McAuley Catholic scored one in the second, one in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.

College Heights collected 10 hits with three doubles, picked up eight RBI, worked seven walks and reached another time with a hit batter, capitalized on five McAuley Catholic errors, stole seven bases, and left nine runners behind.

Tuesday’s performance at the plate could provide the Cougars with confidence going forward.

“We’ve been talking about just going up there having a plan and being confident,” College Heights coach Phillip Jordan said. “I felt like tonight our kids did a good job, took good swings, and I think statistically it shows because we hit the ball hard, we got on base, and obviously to win games you’ve got to be able to do that. It was a good thing to see and hopefully it will carry us as we continue on.”

Philip Thompson and Kelton Welch each sparked College Heights with two-run doubles during that seven-run outburst in the second.
Welch led College Heights with three hits, Caleb Evans had two, and Jayce Walker, Josh Anderson, Ben Thomas, Austin Miller, and Thompson each had one.

Welch, Evans, and Thomas each scored twice and Welch, Miller, and Thompson each drove in two runs as eight of the nine players in the College Heights order either scored or drove in a run Tuesday.

On the mound, Thomas — one of only two seniors on the College Heights roster along with Bo Sitton — earned the win and he allowed three runs over six innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.

“Ben, he probably wasn’t as sharp as he or we would like, but he was still in the zone and kept hitters off-balance,” Jordan said. “He didn’t really give up any hard hits and defensively, if we had made a few more plays behind him, he could have probably gone a complete game. He’s still early in the year getting his pitching arm in shape so he can really go deep in games, but tonight he went six and gave us a chance to win.”

The Cougars return to action Friday on the road against Pierce City, a team that’s scored 57 runs in their four wins this season, including 21 against Ozark 7 member Verona.

“Baseball is a funny game,” Jordan said. “We played really bad (Monday) at Purdy and came out and played pretty good ball tonight. Not perfect, but hopefully it can carry over. We’ll see Friday if we can take the good things from tonight and get better and learn from our mistakes. The reality is, we did not play well defensively tonight. Could have been a different game if we had made the plays that we’re supposed to make.”
The Cougars were charged with three errors Tuesday.

Joe Staton, Rocco Bazzano-Joseph, Michael Parrigon, Brek Sickman, and Kable Reichardt each had one of the Warriors’ five hits against Thomas and Miller, who pitched the seventh for the Cougars. Staton doubled for the Warriors’ only extra-base hit.
Sickman led McAuley Catholic with two runs scored and Tripp Miller earned two RBI.

Bazzano-Joseph earned the loss, and he allowed nine runs (three earned) on nine hits over five innings with nine strikeouts and two walks, while Parrigon allowed two runs (unearned) on a hit with two strikeouts and five walks over his two innings.
McAuley Catholic dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-1 Ozark 7, and the Warriors return to play Monday on the road against Jasper to start a stretch of four games in five days.

BOYS TENNIS: Joplin edges Neosho in COC action

NEOSHO, Mo. — Rallying after dropping two of three doubles matches, Joplin’s boys tennis team earned a 5-4 win over Neosho on Tuesday in Central Ozark Conference action.

“Our doubles matches were close,” Joplin coach Aaron Stump said. “We were up in all three but fell behind late. The guys regrouped going into singles competition to fight back and win the match with their consistent play. It’s a great start for our season to begin conference matchups with a win this year.”

The Wildcats won two of three doubles matches to start the dual.

Neosho’s Christian Williams and Reid Snyder edged Adam Badr and Josiah Hazlewood 9-8 (8-6) and Willis Jarvis and Peyton Williams nipped Michael Mancipe and Hunter Merkley 9-7.

Joplin’s duo of Leif Garrity-Chapel Braman defeated Breckin McAffrey-Wes Williams 8-5.

The Eagles won four of the six singles matches.

Badr defeated Christian Williams 8-1, Garrity beat Snyder 8-4, Merkley topped McAffrey 8-5 and Roman Venturella defeated Wes Williams 8-3.

“Adam’s singles play demonstrates how much he’s developed since last season,” Stump said. “Lief showed grit, coming from behind to clinch the dual with his singles match win. Hunter hit his serves in pretty well today and had good rallies in his match.”

Neosho’s Jarvis beat Hazlewood 8-6 and Peyton Williams edged Braman 8-6.

Joplin (1-1) hosts Nixa on Thursday.

Neosho (2-3) takes on Ozark on Thursday.

BASEBALL: McDonald County rides big first inning to win over Webb City

WEBB CITY, Mo. —Taking advantage of extra outs and free passes, McDonald County scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 6-3 victory over Webb City on an extremely windy and unseasonably warm Tuesday at Chuck Barnes Field.

In a clash between district foes, the opening frame proved crucial.

The Mustangs pushed across five runs in the top of the first. And they did it with just one hit while taking advantage of five walks, two errors and a hit batter.

“We talked about approaches before the game and I thought our kids went up there with patient approaches early in the game,” Mustangs coach Heath Alumbaugh said. “We made Darnell work on the mound and that was key to the first inning. We only had one hit in that inning, but we were able to capitalize on a couple of errors and those walks. Overall, it was a good team win across the board.”

“You can’t walk five guys in one inning and expect to win many baseball games,” Webb City coach Andrew Doennig said. “And you can’t give teams crooked innings and expect to win games. That’s one thing that has killed us in a few games this season. It’s something we have to clean up and get better at.”

After two errors and a walk to start the game, McDonald County’s Isaac Behm slapped a run-scoring single into left field.

Weston Gordon contributed a sacrifice fly to right before Jacob Gordon and Devin Stone both drew bases-loaded walks, chasing Webb City senior right-hander Kaylor Darnell and giving the visitors a four-run cushion.

Junior right-hander Payton Marshall took over on the mound with the bases full and plunked Destyn Dowd to make it 5-0 before inducing an inning-ending pop-up.

The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the first on Drew Vonder Haar’s RBI double into right-center. Pinch runner Andrew Elwell scored on the play before Vonder Haar was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Webb City scored once in the third, as Sam Weller tripled to right and charged home on Gage Chapman’s sac fly.

The Mustangs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Behm’s RBI double.

Trailing 6-2, the Cardinals made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.

Christian Brock doubled, and after an out, Chapman delivered a run-scoring single.

After Cy Darnell was retired, Kaylor Darnell singled before Shaun Hunt walked.

After taking over on the mound with the bases loaded, McDonald County reliever Angel Ruiz was able to record the final out.

“All you can ask the kids to do is get on base,” Doennig said. “They did that in the seventh and they gave us a chance. Sometimes it’s just a little bit too late.”

Senior right-hander Weston Gordon was the winning pitcher. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.

“That’s what Weston Gordon does for us,” Alumbaugh said. “He changes speeds really well. He knows he has a great defense behind him and he doesn’t have to strike people out. Because of that, he throws a ton of strikes and lets the defense play.

“And Angel Ruiz has already come through in the clutch for us this season,” Alumbaugh added. “He closed the door.”

Kaylor Darnell took the loss. He allowed one earned run on one hit and five walks.

Marshall was stellar in relief. Marshall tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out seven, allowing no hits and walking just one.

Doennig noted Marshall kept his team in the game by putting up zeros inning after inning in relief.

“What a great job by Payton,” Doennig said. “He did the same thing on Friday for us. It was a great job by him coming in and keeping the other team down. He got strike one, that was the difference.”

Walker Sweet gave up one run on two hits in the seventh, striking out two.

The Cardinals out-hit the Mustangs 8-3.

Chapman went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Webb City. Behm had two of Mac County’s three hits and drove in two runs.

McDonald County improved to 7-5, while Webb City fell to 6-5.

Both teams are listed in the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association’s latest rankings. Webb City is ranked ninth in Class 5, while McDonald County is receiving votes.

The Cardinals and Mustangs could see each other again, as both squads have been assigned to Class 5 District 7.
