BOYS SECTIONAL HOOPS: College Heights advances to quarterfinals for first time ever

CARTHAGE, Mo. — For the first time in program history, a boys basketball team from College Heights Christian is in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament.

College Heights never trailed on the way to a 54-43 victory over Blue Eye on Wednesday night in a Class 2 sectional at Carthage High School.

“We made history and hopefully we’ll keep making history,” College Heights coach Eric Johnson said. “The team played well. We had some spurts in the third quarter. We knew they were a good team, and we knew they’d hit some shots. Our kids played well. Getting up early on them helped. They had to play catch-up.”

Fifth-ranked College Heights (24-4) will meet top-ranked Norwood (28-1) at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday in the state quarterfinals at Republic High School.

The Cougars lost in the sectional round last year in their first-ever trip to the state tourney. This time around, the Cougars were more than ready for the experience.

“Last year’s game helped us big time,” Johnson said. “We came here last year and didn’t know what to expect. They might have been intimidated. This year, we knew what it’s like.”

Now, the Cougars are heading into uncharted territory—one win away from the Final Four.

“This is the first time in school history winning sectionals, so this feels great and I’m so proud of my teammates,” College Heights senior guard Miller Long said. “This feels awesome. But no one on our team is satisfied yet. We’re ready to go all the way.”

Long said he and his teammates were determined to go further in the postseason this year.

“All of us put in the work over the summer,” Long said. “We’re more confident. We know we’re better this year. We play like it too.”

NAMES & NUMBERS

The Cougars have now won six straight and 12 of their last 13.

Junior forward Curtis Davenport scored 10 points for CHC, while senior forward Hagen Beck added eight. Senior point guard Ethan Adel and 6-7 senior forward Ethan Meeks contributed six points apiece.

Blue Eye ends the season at 23-5.

A trey from Long gave College Heights an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars took a 10-point lead at 24-14 after two treys from Long, a free throw from Caleb Quade, a putback by Long and two hoops inside by the 6-4 Beck.

College Heights’ halftime advantage was 24-16.

The Cougars were clinging to a six-point cushion in the third period when they finished the frame on a 7-2 run for a 35-24 lead.

College Heights separated further by starting the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run. During the game-changing surge, Long scored seven points, while Adel and Davenport added hoops.

Long’s final hoop of the night, a strong drive through the lane, gave College Heights a commanding 20-point lead at 46-26 with just over four minutes to play.

The Bulldogs showed some fight down the stretch. Blue Eye used a 12-4 run to pull within 12 at 50-38.

The Bulldogs cut their deficit down to nine late in the game, but the Cougars received two free throws from both Davenport and Long that all but sealed the win.

“We just had to keep reminding our kids to play good defense and contain their shooters,” Johnson said. “And if you want to win big games, you have to make free throws and rebound. We’ll celebrate tonight, but then we’ll get back to work and prepare for Saturday.”

BOYS DISTRICT HOOPS: Nixa starts fast in district semifinal win over Joplin

Top-seeded Nixa took a double-digit lead against fourth-seeded Joplin over the first six minutes of action and never relinquished it in a 66-39 win in the Class 6 District 5 semifinals on Wednesday inside Kaminsky Gymnasium.

“I thought we played hard,” Joplin coach Bronson Schaake said. “There were moments where fatigue set in, but I thought overall our focus was a lot better than when we played them about a month ago. Nixa is a very talented team with a lot of size and skill. I am proud of the boys and how they fought against a really good team.”

SEASON WRAP

Joplin closes the first season under Coach Schaake with a 19-8 record, graduating seniors Always Wright, Joe Jasper, LT Atherton, Brantley Morris and Calvin Clark.

“I am going to tell the seniors when I go in there that they really set the groundwork when they could have gone the other direction,” Schaake said. “It was a really good season. We won two tournament championships, played really good competition and beat some good teams. I think these guys are going to see that with a great offseason, we can catch these teams.”

“They are good-character kids,” Schaake added about the senior class. “They are good in the classroom and they just work hard. I have only known them for a year, but it was a pleasure coaching them.”

GAME ACTION

Nixa took control of the contest after scoring the game’s first 14 points over the first six minutes of action. Joplin had five early turnovers to help fuel the Nixa surge, led by Jordyn Turner’s five points and Jackson Bell’s four points.

“They were physical with us,” Schaake said of Nixa’s start. “They were physical, especially on the Wrights. They were bumping us off the line. Our bigs were getting some chances around the rim, but they did a good job of getting us off the block.”

Joplin trimmed the deficit to eight points early in the second quarter after back to back driving scores from All Wright made the score 21-13.

Nixa pushed the lead to 19 by halftime after closing the second period on a 9-1 run, highlighted by seven points from Kael Combs, including an alley-oop dunk with eight seconds left in the first half.

Nixa flirted with pushing the lead to the 30-point mark for much of the final quarter. Noah Engelmann scored in transition near the three-minute mark to make the score 65-35.

SCORING LEADERS

Combs finished with 16 points to lead Nixa, while Colin Ruffin closed the game with 14 points. Bell and Colten Berry each added 10 points in the win.

All Wright finished with 18 points, while Always Wright had 10 points in the loss for Joplin.

GIRLS SECTIONAL HOOPS: Miller suffers season-ending loss to hot-shooting Blue Eye

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Ignited by stellar perimeter shooting, Blue Eye led from start to finish en route to a convincing 56-30 victory over Miller in a Class 2 girls sectional contest on Wednesday night at Carthage High School.

Fourth-ranked Blue Eye (25-5) meets Dora (20-8) in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Republic.

Third-ranked Miller ends the season with a record of 23-4.

The hot-shooting Bulldogs built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led 22-7 by intermission.

Miller trailed by 18 entering the fourth quarter and the Cardinals were unable to put together a late surge.

Blue Eye made 12 3-pointers in the game.

Senior guard Avery Arnold hit six treys for 18 points, while senior guard Gracyn Fairchild made four 3-pointers for 12 points.

Junior forward Samantha George also reached double figures with 10 points. Senior Riley Arnold hit two treys and scored nine.

The Cardinals were held to 10 field goals, four from long range.

Miller senior forward Kaylee Helton scored 12 points to lead the Cardinals. Classmate Payten Richardson added six points and junior forward Hailey Mart had five.

Miller struggled to generate much offense against Blue Eye’s halfcourt defense.

The Bulldogs made four 3-pointers in the first quarter, three by Avery Arnold and another from Fairchild, to take a 12-2 lead.

The Cardinals did not make a field goal in the first period and found themselves down 10 early.

Blue Eye scored the first eight points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 20-2.

After outscoring the Cardinals 10-5 in the second period, Blue Eye’s halftime advantage was 22-7.

Miller was limited to two field goals and three free throws in the first half, as the Cardinals were simply plagued by cold shooting.

The Bulldogs, who scored the first eight points of the second half, held a comfortable 37-19 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Blue Eye’s Avery Arnold hit two corner 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 43-19 lead.

It was one the Bulldogs would never relinquish.

Miller seniors Claudia Hadlock, Helton and Richardson saw their stellar prep careers come to an end. The foursome led the Cardinals to four district championships.
