BOYS SWIMMING: Webb City wins seven events to claim invite championship; Carthage takes second, Joplin fourth

 

WEBB CITY, Mo. — By winning seven of 12 events, the host Webb City Cardinals captured the team championship at the Red Bird Invitational boys swim meet on Saturday at the Buck Miner Swim Center. 

Webb City compiled 375 points, while Carthage was second with 240. Monett (215) and Joplin (188) finished third and fourth in the standings, while Hillcrest (61), Lamar (26) and Parkview (9) rounded out the seven-team field.

 

WEBB CITY RESULTS

In addition to the seven first-place finishes, the Cardinals took second in three events and finished third in five others in what was a strong showing by the hosts.  

Ethan Shipley and Micah Brouwer won two individual  events apiece for the Cardinals.

Shipley placed first in the 200 individual medley with a state-consideration time of 2:17 and also won the 100 freestyle in 54.75 seconds. 

Brouwer won the 100 butterfly in 1:02 and took first in the 100 breaststroke in a consideration time of 1:08.  

Carson Forcum won the 1-meter diving competition, recording a program record score of 433.65. Teammates Eric Keeling and Carter Forcum placed second and third. 

Webb City won the 200 freestyle relay in a state-consideration time of 1:44, with Emiliano Vasquez, Brouwer, Cody Herndon and Zion Wood competing. 

The team of Shipley, Vasquez, Herndon and Steve Kenlee won the 400 freestyle relay in a consideration time of 3:46.66. 

Webb City’s Judah Ritchie, Brouwer, Wood and Shipley took second in the 200 medley relay with a consideration time of 1:53.75.

Wood was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke.

Vasquez finished third in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 butterfly, while Herndon took third in the 100 free and Ritchie placed third in the 100 backstroke.

Also for the Cardinals, Steve Kenlee placed third in the 500 freestyle, while Wood took fourth in the 200 IM.

Lucas Lowery finished fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free. 

Jonathan Kenlee finished sixth in the 100 backstroke and Eric Keeling was seventh in the 100 breaststroke. 

 

CARTHAGE RESULTS

Carthage won two events.

Kellen Frieling took first in the 100 backstroke by recording a state-consideration time of 59.43 seconds.

The Tigers, featuring Frieling, Braxton McBride, Will Wallace and Ezekiel Ramirez, took first in the 200 medley relay in a state-consideration time of 1:53.52.

The team of Landon White, Noah Blackford, Ryan Steinbach and Trey Nye finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a consideration time of 1:53.85. 

The Tigers were fourth in the 400 free relay, with Ramirez, Wallace, Frieling and McBride recording a consideration time of 4:02. 

Wallace was the runner-up in both the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, while Ramirez took second in the 100 freestyle. 

Ramirez and Frieling finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle, while White took third in the 100 fly. 

McBride placed third in the 100 breaststroke and also took fifth in the 50 free. 

Blackford was fourth in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 IM.

 

JOPLIN RESULTS

Joplin’s Nathan Wardlow won two events, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01 and the 500 freestyle in a consideration time of 5:24. 

Zane Newman was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly and also placed fifth in the 100 free. 

Parker Hinman placed third in the 200 IM and Jacob Glenn was fourth in both the 50 free and the 100 backstroke. 

Jackson Mordica finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke, while Hinman was sixth in the 500 freestyle. 

The Eagles placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with a consideration time of 3:52, with Glenn, Wardlow, Hinman and Newman swimming.

Joplin’s 200 medley relay team of Glenn, Mordica, Newman and Wardlow placed fourth with a consideration time of 1:56.61. 

The Eagles were also fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, with Jordan Goins, Oliver Bortz, Hinman and Mordica swimming. 

 

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Monett’s Matthew Fillinger won the 50 free in 24.14 seconds and took second in the 100 backstroke (1:00). 

 

PREP CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: Neosho sweeps titles at McDonald County; Carthage competes in Branson

 

NEOSHO CLAIM TITLES AT MCDONALD COUNTY

ANDERSON, Mo. — Neosho’s boys and girls cross country teams both captured team championships at the McDonald County Meet at the Rock Invitational on Saturday.

With four runners in the top 10, Neosho’s boys had 31 points. East Newton was second with 49 and Lamar took third with 69. 

Neosho’s Kaden Cole won the boys race in 17:03. Monett’s Julio Cruz took second in 17:44, while Neosho’s Carson Newell was third in 18:40. 

East Newton’s Isaac Bales and Kelton Sorrell finished fourth and fifth, while Nevada’s Kaden Padgett took sixth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Neosho’s Harry Slinkard, Lamar’s Blaine Breshears, Neosho’s Bryce Hall and Lamar’s Quintin Webb. 

Neosho’s Connor Jordon finished 15th, while teammates Gabriel Mabrey and Corbin Goins were 21st and 25th, respectively. 

With four runners in the top 11, Neosho’s girls finished with 31 points and Logan-Rogersville was second with 49. 

Lamar’s Kiersten Potter was the individual champion in 21:02, while Neosho’s Chloe Wood took second in 21:12.

Rounding out the top five were Aurora’s Kaci Singer, Neosho’s Riley Kemna and Nevada’s Avery Morris.

Neosho’s Makenna Davis and Bailey Miller were 10th and 11th, while teammate Adrianna Adams took 17th.

Also of note, Lamar’s Mikayla Madison was ninth and teammate Abigail Diggs took 12th, while Monett’s Mary Jastal was 14th and McDonald County’s Clara Horton finished 15th. 

 

CARTHAGE COMPETES IN BRANSON

BRANSON, Mo. — Carthage’s cross country squads competed at the Cedar Ridge Invitational on Saturday.

In the varsity boys race, Carthage’s Mariques Strickland finished eighth with a time of 17 minutes flat.

Carthage’s Joseph Wyrick and Eddy Fuentes finished 29th and 30th, respectively. Caleb Fewin was 36th, Emerson Ixcol Gonzalez was 46th and Landen Schrader took 50th.

The Tigers finished fifth in the team standings with 145 points. Kickapoo (29) and Branson (89) were the top two teams.  

In the girls race, Carthage freshman Katelyn Witherspoon was 23rd in 22:37. 

Also for the Tigers, Alyssa Williams was 48th, Jennifer Rodas-Gomez took 54th, Mildred Elias-Garcia was 57th, Sonia Lopez-Gramajo was 61st and Mildred Vicente-Hernandez was 62nd. 

Carthage was eighth in the standings with 220 points.

Kickapoo (59) and Republic (66) were the top two teams.

CARTHAGE INVITE: Carthage takes two losses, while McDonald County splits in bracket play

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The hosts Carthage Tigers dropped games against Ozark and McDonald County, while the Mustangs earned a split in Gold bracket play of the 22nd annual Carthage Invitational on Saturday.

OZARK 3, CARTHAGE 1

Both teams traded runs in the third inning before Ozark plated two in the top of the fifth on the way to a 3-1 win over Carthage.

Savannah Hughes earned the win in the circle after allowing one run on four hits in five innings. Jordyn Foley earned the save after pitching two scoreless innings in relief, striking out one and walking one. 

Jensyn Elder took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits, four walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Hughes gave her team the lead in the top of the third when she came up with an RBI single to center with two outs.

Ashlyn Brust tied the game in the bottom of the third when she scored Ashlynn Jackson with a single to right field.

Mekaylee Linnebur gave Ozark the lead in the fifth inning when she led off the top half of the frame with a solo home run to center. Natalie Morgan picked up a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to wrap the scoring in the game.

Kenna Mayfield had three hits and scored twice, while Morgan finished with two hits for Ozark.

Mary Grace Richmond, Brooklynn Dolon-Main, Elder and Brust all had hits for Carthage. Brust had the team’s only RBI. 

 

MCDONALD COUNTY 5, CARTHAGE 0

McDonald County scored two runs in each of the first two innings before adding insurance in the seventh inning en route to a 5-0 win over Carthage.

Madeline McCall earned the complete-game win for McDonald County after blanking Carthage over seven innings, allowing one hit, walking three and striking out 13.

Elder took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Jacie Frencken doubled home Reagan Myrick, while McCall followed with an RBI single to right to give the Mustangs a 2-0 cushion over the Tigers.

Mariana Salas drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to force home a run, with Carlee Cooper singling home a run to center two batters later to make the score 4-0. Katelynn Townsend scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to cap the scoring.



OZARK 14, MCDONALD COUNTY 4

Ozark scored in each of the first five innings and capped the game with a four-run seventh inning on the way to the win.

The Tigers scored twice in the first and second innings, once in the third, two more times in the fourth and three times in the fifth to build a 10-3 lead. After Ozark scored four in the seventh, McDonald County scored once in the seventh but the rally stopped there.

Foley earned the win after allowing three runs, four earned, on nine hits, two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Nevaeh Dodson took the loss after allowing 14 runs, six earned, on 17 hits and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Abby Ford had three hits, scored four times and drove in one, while Courtney Merrell had three hits and an RBI. Brooklyn Hasler and Linnebur also had three hits. Linnebur finished with two RBI and two runs scored.

Dodson had three hits and scored twice to lead the Mustangs.
