CROSS COUNTRY: Joplin, Webb City boys finish second, fourth in Bolivar; WC girls take third

 

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Competing among 50 teams from across the region, Joplin’s boys finished second and Webb City was fourth at the Southwest Cross Country Coaches Association Richard Clark Invitational on Saturday at the Bolivar Golf Course. 

Kickapoo was the team champion with a team score of 40, while Joplin (113), Nixa (147), Webb City (194) and Willard (198) rounded out the top five teams. East Newton was ninth and Carthage was 11th. Included in the 50 teams in attendance were 32 full squads and 300 total runners. 

Daelen Ackley of El Dorado Springs was the individual champion in the varsity boys race with a time of 15:46. 

Joplin’s Hobbs Campbell (16:35.06) and Evan Matlock (16:35.64) finished ninth and 10th, respectively. 

East Newton’s Kelton Sorrell placed 11th (16:35), while Webb City’s Dustin Brockmiller took 15th (16:49). Joplin’s Ian Horton placed 19th, Monett’s Julio Cruz finished 21st and Webb City’s Roman Borboa was 24th.

East Newton’s Gabe Bergen took 27th and Carthage’s Mariques Strickland crossed the line 33rd. Joplin’s Nicholas Horton finished 36th, East Newton’s Chase Sorrell was 37th and Webb City’s Evan Stevens finished 38th. 

Also, Lamar’s Pierce Heins was 48th, Carthage’s Miquel Solano took 51st, Joplin’s Zaben Barnes was 52nd, Carthage’s Joseph Wyrick placed 56th and Webb City’s Blake Vaughan finished 59th. 

The top finisher for College Heights was Rolen Sanderson, who crossed the line 92nd. Among Class 2 runners, Sanderson was seventh. 

 

GIRLS RESULTS

Webb City’s girls finished third (134 points) in the team standings behind Nixa (80) and Kickapoo (110). Joplin was 11th and Carthage was 14th. There were 49 teams, including 25 full squads, and 229 runners in the varsity girls race. 

Kickapoo’s Klarie Brown was the top finisher in the girls race with a time of 19:06.

Webb City’s Abi Street (19:44) and Riley Hawkins (20:07) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Also of note, the Webb City pair were the first and third Class 4 runners to finish.

Lamar’s Kiersten Potter took 10th in 20:18. She was the top Class 3 runner in the event. 

Webb City’s Alanna Bundy finished 21st and teammate Isabelle Lopez was 36th. Carthage’s Margaret Boyd finished 42nd, while Joplin’s duo of Mairi Beranek and Sage Mitchell crossed the line 52nd and 55th, respectively.

Jayli Johnson was College Heights’ top finisher, as the junior took 87th. She was the sixth Class 2 runner to finish.

PREP SOFTBALL: Area squads compete at annual Paige Neal/Christina Freeman tourney

 

The Paige Neal/Christina Freeman Softball Tournament concluded on Saturday at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Blue Springs was crowned the tourney’s 2021 champion. The Wildcats went 5-0 at the 12-team invite, which is sponsored by the Joplin Sports Authority and Joplin High School. 

Staley was the tourney’s runner-up, while Carthage took third place. 

Carthage went 3-0 in pool play on Friday and then suffered losses to Blue Springs and Staley on Saturday in Gold bracket play. 

Webb City and Neosho both went 3-2 at the event. Joplin went 2-3, Seneca went 1-4 and Carl Junction went 0-5.
