PREP BASEBALL: Webb City sweeps twinbill, improves to 22-5

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Webb City extended its winning streak to eight by earning a pair of run-rule victories on Saturday.

The Cardinals pushed across 27 runs in a non-conference prep baseball twinbill, as Webb City defeated Hillcrest 16-6 and Harrisonville 11-1 on a windy afternoon at Chuck Barnes Field.

The Cardinals are now 22-5.

With just two regular season dates remaining before the postseason arrives, Webb City coach Flave Darnell is confident his team is peaking at exactly the right time.

“We’re playing really good baseball right now,” Darnell said. “I’m really happy with our pitching right now. Noah (Mitchell) had a good outing in our first game. He threw a ton of strikes. Then (Jeremiah) Leaming came in and threw strikes. And then in our second game, Shane (Noel) and Cooper (Crouch) both did a great job. It was good to see those guys pitch well. I’m a firm believer that good pitching and good defense wins games, especially when the playoffs arrive. I think we are hitting our stride at the right time. We’re getting timely hitting and good pitching and good defense. Hopefully we can keep it up.”

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Lions advance in MIAA Tournament

The Missouri Southern softball program advanced in the MIAA Tournament following a 7-5 game one win and a 3-2 walk-off win over Missouri Western inside the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.

The Griffons (27-19) got the scoring started in game one in the second inning scoring four. Southern didn’t waste time as the Lions (30-13-1) scored seven in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.

Beginning the scoring explosion was a Kara Amos triple to score Ashlynn Williams. Sidnie Hurst reached on a fielding error by the Griffon second basemen to score Amos and Yazmin Vargas singled to left field, driving in Adrianna Young. Makaila Leonhart had a infield single to score Hurst and Leighton Withers had a bases clearing triple to score Josie Tofpi, Leonhart and Vargas.

Western got a run in the seventh, but a double play turned by Leonhart ended the game with the bases loaded and the Lions victorious 7-5. Withers led with three RBIs, Vargas had two hits and a stolen base, Young led the team with two stolen bases and Amos picked up her 10thwin of the season pitching 5.1 innings of relief striking out three.

In the second game Missouri Western jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Lions shut them out the rest of the way, as Bailey Lacy allowed just one baserunner in the final three innings, while striking out four Griffons.

Pitch hitting in the fourth inning Izzy Medrano picked up an RBI on a groundout to get the Lions on the board. And in the bottom of the seventh inning Vargas was the first to reach on base before stealing second, her 31st steal of the season. Following a Leonhart liner that almost got past the first basemen, Josie Tofpi was walked on four straight balls. Withers took the second pitch she saw in the at bat and ripped one to the top of the right field fence that stayed in to score Vargas and Tofpi to walk-off the game and advance to the semi-final round of the MIAA Tournament held in Edmond, Okla.

Withers led with her walk-off two RBIs, Medrano collected the other RBI, Amos went 2-of-3, Vargas is now tied with Abi Corbett’s 2016 tally for the fifth most steals in a single-season at Missouri Southern. Lacy struck out seven in a complete game to earn her 10th win of the season.

The Lions await the winner of the Central Missouri and Washburn series after both teams picked up wins tonight. In Edmond the Lions will be playing Thursday May 13 at 5 p.m.

Missouri Southern senior lefty Zach Parish became the NCAA Division II all-time strikeout king as the Lions split a double-header with Rogers State on Saturday. The Lions won the opener 12-6, but dropping the nightcap 7-2 at Warren Turner Field.

Parish struck out eight in five innings, moving his all-time strikeout total to 479 and setting a new Division II record in the process.

Parish breaks the previous record that was set by Danny Lampley of Wingate from 1995-98. Parish also set his record in 23 fewer innings than Lampley did.

Parish allowed one unearned run and scattered three hits in moving to 10-1 on the season.

An RBI double from Willis drove in two, while Fitzpatrick added another RBI to push the score to 7-0. A double from Gagan scored Fitzpatrick before Kusiak capped the inning with a three-run bomb to left field.

RSU (18-19, 14-18 MIAA) added four runs before the Lions got a sacrifice fly from Milas in the seventh to make the score 12-4. The Hillcats added two more in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Game two saw the game tied at two apiece before RSU scored five runs in the eighth to seal the win.

After the Hillcats led 2-0 going to the bottom of the second, Willis drove in Kinder to cut the lead in half. Fitzpatrick added an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game, but the five-run 8th for the Hillcats proved to be too much.
