4-STATES CHALLENGE: Webb City rolls past Pittsburg for second win in as many days

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Taking the court for the second time in less than 24 hours didn’t seem to bother the Webb City Cardinals.

Led by its stellar guard play, Webb City rode a quick start to a convincing 84-54 victory over Pittsburg on Saturday afternoon in the 4-States Challenge inside the Cardinal Dome.

It was the team’s second win in as many days, as Webb City earned a victory at Bentonville West on Friday night.

“I thought we played with a lot of energy,” Webb City coach Jason Horn said. “Playing today after playing last night was a concern. We’re not in great game shape yet. I know we were sore this morning. We tried to get their bodies prepared as much as we could. With the way things are going in the world, you have to be ready to play on a moment’s notice. We told our guys today was a good opportunity for them to play a good opponent in a back-to-back situation almost like a tournament setting. They handled it well.”

The Cardinals hiked their record to 4-1.

Senior guard Nickhai Howard led the Cardinals with 19 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Howard scored 17 in the first half.

Junior guard Cohl Vaden contributed 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and senior guard Mekhi Garrard added 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

“Guard play has been our strength,” Horn said. “We generally have four guys on the floor who can handle the ball, sometimes five. All the guys are a threat to shoot the ball and they do a good job of sharing the ball. Anytime you have good guard play and have guys who are willing to make the extra pass, you’re going to have a lot of success.”

Also for the Cardinals, Max Higginbotham scored nine points, while Luke Brumit and Kaden Turner had eight points apiece. Trey Roets scored five and Trenton Hayes added four. Brumit pulled down eight rebounds.

The Cardinals hit 29-of-69 field goal attempts, including 8-of-22 from 3-point range.

Pittsburg senior guard Javon Grant poured in 33 points. Grant made 10-of-23 shots from the field and 9-of-13 free throws.

The Purple Dragons (0-3) made 17-of-46 field goal attempts (37 percent), including 4-of-16 from long distance.

Webb City out-rebounded Pittsburg 40-30. The Dragons had 27 turnovers to the Cardinals’ 15.

Webb City never trailed in the game.

Back-to-back midrange jumpers from Howard and a trey from Turner gave Webb City a 17-6 advantage with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Pittsburg’s Grant hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, cutting Webb City’s lead to 19-10 at the end of the first frame.

Higginbotham’s two corner treys pushed Webb City’s lead to 32-14 with 4:24 left in the first half.

Garrard’s layup and Howard’s putback extended the Cardinals’ advantage to 20 at 36-16. Howard’s long buzzer-beating trey made it 44-23 at the break. The Cardinals outscored the Dragons 25-13 in the second period.

Webb City put together a 10-0 surge late in the third period to take a comfy 64-35 lead.

During the spurt, Turner scored in the paint, Garrard drilled a corner 3-pointer, Higginbotham converted an old-fashioned 3-point play before Vaden scored in the lane.

The final outcome was never in doubt in the fourth quarter, as Webb City pushed its lead past 30, resulting in a running clock.

“They were looking forward to this game,” Horn said of his squad. “Anytime you get a chance to play a local school there’s just a little more incentive added to it.”

4-STATES CHALLENGE ROUNDUP: Mount Vernon outlasts East Newton in overtime; Bishop Miege defeats Nevada

MOUNT VERNON 61, EAST NEWTON 57

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Mount Vernon rallied inside the final minute of the fourth quarter before going on to beat East Newton in overtime in the 4-States Challenge on Saturday.

Mason Ballay knocked down two free throws with 28.8 seconds left in regulation to give Mount Vernon a 50-49 lead before a miss on the other end also resulted in two free throws for Ballay with 15.5 left in regulation. East Newton’s Kyson Lahman grabbed an offensive rebound at the other end and was fouled on the putback attempt, sinking the and-one free throw to tie the game back up at 52-52 with 9.8 seconds left and ultimately sending the contest into overtime.

Ballay opened the extra period with a reverse layup, which was followed by a score on the drive by Kai Brown to give Mount Vernon a two-possession lead. The Mountaineers ultimately scored the first seven points of overtime before going on to the 61-57 win.

Brown led Mount Vernon with 25 points, while Ballay finished with 22 in the win. Curt Wendler scored eight points.

Lahman finished with 18 to lead East Newton. Tanner Youngblood knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to 16 points for the Patriots, who suffered their first loss after six wins.

BISHOP MIEGE 78, NEVADA 36

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Nevada Tigers simply ran into one of the top teams in the state of Kansas.

Loaded with future NCAA Division I players, Bishop Miege handed Nevada a 78-36 loss on Saturday at the 4-States Challenge inside the Cardinal Dome on the campus of Webb City High School.

Nevada coach Shaun Gray said he was pleased with his team’s effort against a talented opponent.

“We were pleased with the way we came out, and all in all, we’re pleased with the effort our guys gave tonight,” Gray said. “We had good energy and good movement on defense. We got some shots to fall early. We went cold from the 3-point line and that helped feed their transition game. And they shot the ball well. We’re pleased with our guys’ effort and we’ll take a lot of positives away from this.”

Logan Applegate scored 18 points to lead Nevada (4-3), while Lane McNeley added nine points.

Christian Bowen-Webb scored 20 points and hit five 3-pointers for the Stags (3-0) from Shawnee Mission, while Mark Mitchell added 19. Harrison Braudis added 13 points and Taj Manning scored 12.

A 6-foot-9 junior small forward, Mitchell is the top-ranked boys basketball player in the state of Kansas.

Mitchell has offers from a number of NCAA Division I schools, including North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, Texas, USC, Wake Forest, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Mitchell is listed as the No. 11 prospect in the country by 247Sports.

A Grandview transfer, the 6-7 Manning is ranked as the fourth-best player in the Sunflower State. A junior, Manning also received lots of D-I interest. The Stags also featured 7-3 senior Tayt Harbour.

Bishop Miege led 19-9 at the end of the first period and the Stags took a 39-24 lead into halftime. Mitchell scored 15 points in the first half.

Bowen-Webb’s trey, Mitchell’s one-handed dunk and a triple from Braudis pushed Bishop Miege’s lead to 57-27 with just under four minutes left in the third period.

The Stags were up 66-32 heading into the fourth quarter, and there was a running clock in the final frame.

JOPLIN MISSING IN ACTION

The Joplin Eagles were originally scheduled to play Parsons (Kan.) at the event, but the Vikings pulled out of the contest on Wednesday due to COVID issues.

A replacement for Parsons could not be found, so the Eagles missed out on participating this year.

4-STATES CHALLENGE: Thayer starts fast, knocks off Carthage

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Carthage found itself in an early hole and never recovered in a 67-53 loss to a talented Thayer squad on Saturday night at the 4-States Challenge at Webb City High School’s Cardinal Dome.

The undefeated Bobcats (4-0) scored the first eight points of the game and tallied 23 points in the opening quarter en route to victory.

“I told our guys that is an extremely well-coached, experienced and really skilled basketball team,” Carthage coach Nathan Morris said of the Bobcats. “That didn’t feel like a 14-point game. It didn’t feel like we were ever in the game. They did a great job of controlling the game from the jump.”

A returning all-state performer, Jordan Andrews poured in 30 points to lead Thayer. Andrews made 10 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and 7-of-8 free throws. Gaige Pitts added 12 points for the Bobcats and Jayce Haven scored 10.

Thayer returned its entire lineup from last year’s team that won 22 games and captured a district championship.

Sophomore guard Max Templeman scored 15 points to lead Carthage (3-3). Templeman made three 3-pointers.

Junior guard Joel Pugh and senior forward Patrick Carlton scored 14 points apiece for Carthage, while freshman Justin Ray had six points and senior Silas Templeman added four.

The Tigers trailed 15-5 early, but rallied late in the opening frame. Five straight points from Max Templeman—two free throws and a trey—cut Carthage’s deficit to 19-16.

But in a game-changing swing, Thayer scored four quick points in the final seconds, as Landry Pitts made a layup, the Tigers turned the ball over on the inbounds play and Lane Grims scored on a buzzer-beating hoop for a 23-16 lead.

Thayer outscored Carthage 19-14 in the second period to take a 42-30 halftime lead.

The third quarter was even, 13-13, but Carthage trailed 55-43 entering the fourth quarter.

The Tigers were unable to make a serious run at the lead in the final frame, as the two teams simply traded buckets the rest of the way. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Tigers.

Morris noted his team is still trying to come together.

“We have to find a way to be locked in for 32 minutes,” Morris said. “It’s hard to do it against a team like that. They play an amazing matchup zone. We tried to play our game, but the zone really affected us. We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight.”

Morris added playing a team of Thayer’s caliber at this stage of the season will only benefit his squad going forward.

“That is a very similar team to what we’ll see in a Republic or an Ozark…just the way they play, and how smart they play,” he said.

Carthage returns to action on Dec. 28 against St. Pius X at the Rolla Tournament.

4-STATES CHALLENGE: College Heights’ rally comes up short against Galena

WEBB CITY, Mo. — College Heights Christian boys basketball trailed by double digits late in the third quarter before rallying to tie the game with less than five minutes in regulation. Galena never allowed the Cougars to gain the lead in the waning minutes, holding on for a 60-52 win to open the 4-States Challenge on Saturday.

“We were down there (late) and could have given up,” College Heights coach Eric Johnson said. “We fought back and tied the game. We had an opportunity for more, but we gave up five points with free throws and offensive rebounds. It was kind of like the season for us so far—turnovers and giving up offensive rebounds. It gives us a lot of things to work on over Christmas.”

Galena took a five-point lead into the intermission and scored the first two baskets out of the break on a drive from Brett Sarwinski and a 3-pointer from Deacon Henson to give the Bulldogs a 10-point, 33-23 lead.

Galena and College Heights traded baskets before Kenyon Martin scored inside and Sarwinksi followed with a 3-ball at the 1:49 mark to give the Bulldogs a 45-30 advantage.

College Heights’ Miller Long put the Cougars on his back to close the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered points by himself to trim CHC’s deficit to eight, 47-39, to start the fourth. Long started the personal run with a three-point play, which was followed by a fast-break score off a steal and a pair of free throws following another steal with 12.5 seconds left.

“They weren’t going to let him do what he wanted to do after he scored 27 on them last time,” Johnson said of Long’s play to spark the Cougars. “They defended him tight, but once he gets going, he gets on a roll. We just had a hard time getting him open and getting him the ball when he was open.”

College Heights used the spark and opened the fourth quarter as hot as it closed the third, going on a 10-2 run in less than four minutes of game action to tie things up at 49-49. Ethan Adel got the run started with a score on the drive. Ben Thomas added a 3-pointer from the wing before Ethan Meeks hit a turnaround shot in the post to cut the Galena lead to three. Long knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing at the 4:39 mark to tie up the game.

“Probably the pressure defense,” Johnson said when asked what fueled the game-tying run to start the fourth quarter. “We got active on defense, and that’s probably something we should have done the whole game. … You hate to get 15 behind before you start that, but maybe we will learn from it and do it earlier in the game, now.”

Unfortunately for CHC, that would be where the momentum swing came to a close. Galena answered with a Sarwinski driving score and a three-point play from Garrett Lawson to stretch the lead back to five, 54-49.

Long knocked down a catch-and-shoot jumper from the perimeter to bring the Cougars within two, 54-52, with 2:20 to play, but Galena closed the on a 6-0 run to seal the win.

SCORING LEADERS

Long led College Heights with 20 points, including two four-quarter 3-pointers. Adel finished second in scoring with 13 points, while Hagen Beck added six in the loss.

“Scoring-wise, that was probably (Ethan’s) best game all year,” Johnson said. “They double teamed Miller a lot, so he had some opportunities there. He finished better today than he had been.”

Sarwinksi led Galena with a game-high 21 points, while Kobe McGlothlin finished with 11 points.

College Heights is at Jasper for a 7 p.m. matchup on Jan. 4.
