Webb City boys roll past Lamar in season opener

WEBB CITY, Mo. — In what’s become an annual occurrence, the Webb City boys basketball program once again began a new season against the Lamar Tigers.

And on Tuesday night, the Cardinals extended their win streak in the series.

Webb City earned a convincing 77-48 win over Lamar in the opener of the 2020-21 season inside the Cardinal Dome.

For the Cardinals, it’s the seventh straight win over the Tigers to open a new campaign.

“I feel good,” Webb City coach Jason Horn said. “I think we played well in stretches. We have some things we have to fix. But court time will help. We have a good mix of guys who have been in practice, but we have to adjust to the guys who have had just about five days to prepare. We’re playing ourselves into shape in certain spots.”

Of course, many of the Tigers played for the school’s football team that just won a Class 2 state championship this past Saturday.

Webb City knows all about that scenario, as several of this year’s Cardinals got off to a late start to the hoops season after the football program advanced to the state semifinals.

“This is Year 5 for me, so we’re used to doing it,” Horn said. “It’s just something we’ve adjusted to. The kids have been in the system long enough that when they do come in, it’s about polishing things up.”

Junior forward Kaden Turner scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Cardinals (1-0), while versatile senior guard Nickhai Howard recorded a double-double. The 5-foot-11 Howard scored 15 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and also handed out four assists.

“Nickhai is very talented and I thought he did a good job of directing traffic on both ends of the floor,” Horn said. “His basketball IQ has improved. In my opinion, he’s as good as any player in the area right now.”

Sophomore Alex Martin also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while junior Cohl Vaden scored 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers.

Mekhi Garrard and Max Higginbotham added eight points apiece for the Cardinals, who had eight different players score.

Webb City made 45 percent of its field goal attempts (33-of-73), including 7-of-18 3-pointers.

Case Tucker scored 16 points to lead Lamar, while Conner Shoff added nine. The Tigers made 16-of-53 shots from the floor (30 percent), including just 3-of-23 3-pointers (13 percent).

In a game they never trailed, Webb City stormed out of the gates and took a 13-2 lead. The Cardinals showed off their depth and used full-court pressure to convert steals into hoops in transition.

Webb City led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter, 43-19 at the break and 64-37 entering the final frame.

As you’d expect in a season opener for both teams, the play was sloppy at times. Lamar had 18 turnovers and Webb City had 16 turnovers.

“There are things we can fix, but there are a lot of positives from this one,” Horn said.

Webb City is at East Newton on Friday. The Cardinals do not play at home again until Dec. 19.

BOYS HOOPS ROUNDUP: Witt earns first-career win at McAuley; Thomas Jefferson cruises past Everton

McAuley Catholic’s Tony Witt earned his first-career win on Tuesday when the Warriors handed Pierce CIty a 45-33 loss.

We beat a good Pierce City team tonight,” Witt said to SoMo Sports. “Our defense was the difference maker. Our poise down the stretch was big in sealing the victory.

“We are going to enjoy it and move on. We have another big game Friday against another good opponent. We are going to take the next two days and fix some mistakes from our previous game against them and play our best.”

The Warriors (1-4) held Pierce City to two points in the first quarter, helping to build a 16-11 advantage at the intermission. McAuley pushed the lead to double digits by the end of the third quarter en route to the win.

Daniel Wagner led McAuley with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Matthew Dohmen finished with 12 points and Thomas Black added 10 to give the Warriors three players in double figures. Rocco Bazzano-Joseph added six points.

Ashton Medlin led Pierce City with nine points, while Kyle Renkoski added eight.

McAuley hits the road for a matchup with Sarcoxie on Dec. 11.

THOMAS JEFFERSON CRUISES PAST EVERTON

EVERTON, Mo. — Thomas Jefferson opened the game fast and never let up in a 64-39 road win over Everton on Tuesday.

Thomas Jefferson outscored Everton 25-9 in the first quarter before holding the Tigers scoreless in the second period on the way to building an insurmountable 37-9 lead by the intermission.

Caden Myers led the Cavaliers, who had eight players score in the win, with 20 points, while Noah Hamlett finished with nine. Jay Ball and Kelsey Atteberry each scored eight, Tyler Brouhard finishing with seven points.

Tre Shearer led Everton with a game-high 23 points in the loss.

Thomas Jefferson hosts Purdy on Dec. 14.

Webb City girls earn first win

WEBB CITY, Mo. It was a night of firsts for the Webb City girls basketball program.

For starters, the Cardinals played at home for the first time during the 2020-21 season.

On top of that, the Cardinals had their full squad in uniform for the first time this winter.

And perhaps most importantly, the Cardinals earned their first win.

Led by its senior trio, Webb City rolled to a 54-35 win over Lamar on Tuesday night inside the Cardinal Dome.

The Cardinals won for the first time after going 0-3 last week at Carthage’s tourney, where the team did not have everyone available.

“It was nice to have everybody out there,” Webb City coach Lance Robbins said. “Last week was a learning experience for us. A lot of younger kids were able to get some experience and hopefully that will pay off for us down the road. You could see that we still have some kinks to work out with everybody. But I think we’re going in the right direction.”

Webb City’s three seniors all scored in double figures, as Jaydee Duda scored 18 points, while Sierra Kimbrough had 15 and Raven Vaughn added 11.

“All three of our seniors did a good job of scoring the basketball tonight,” Robbins said. “We expect a lot out of those three and I thought they did a good job tonight.”

Also for Webb City, Kenzie Robbins and Ripley Shanks scored three points apiece, while Kate Brownfield and Kylie Jennings contributed two points apiece.

The Cardinals led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Webb City outscored Lamar 18-4 in the game-changing second quarter to take control of the non-conference clash.

Kimbrough scored 13 during the second period, including the first seven points of the frame.

Late in the half, Kimbrough’s two hoops in transition gave Webb City a 27-11 halftime advantage.

“Defensively, I thought we were doing a good job,” Robbins said. “I thought the big key for us was Sierra Kimbrough on both ends. She set the tone for us. She’s our leader. She does a great job defensively. Tonight, we were able to take advantage of her in pick-and-roll situations for a few minutes. She was able to get her own buckets and she got us going offensively. It was a good job by her.”

The hosts continued to pull away in the third quarter. Duda’s two buckets gave the Cardinals a 31-13 lead. Later in the third period, Vaughn hit a corner trey and then made a layup to give Webb City a comfortable 39-18 cushion.

Lamar scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, but a pair of hoops in transition from Duda gave Webb City a 45-25 advantage with 4:15 left.

“I think we rebounded the ball a little better in the second half,” Robbins said. “We’ve still got to get better at putting people away. Lamar did a good job of competing.”

Webb City hosts Miller at 7:30 on Thursday night.

PREP HOOPS: Late foul trouble hinders Neosho in loss Rogers

NEOSHO, Mo. — A fast start propelled Neosho to an early lead before second-half foul trouble stymied the Wildcats in a 54-43 loss to Rogers, Arkansas, on Tuesday.

“Fouls got us in trouble,” Neosho coach Zane Culp said. “Putting the ball in holes was a struggle, too. … If our main scorer isn’t scoring and our second scorer has to carry the complete load, it’s hard. We’d have to hold a team like tonight to 40 points, and that’s just tough to do.”

Neosho (1-1) started the game on a blistering pace, jumping out to a 9-0 run while holding Rogers scoreless for nearly the entire first five minutes of action. Chase Flynn started the scoring for the Wildcats, converting two free throws before knocking down a 3-pointer in transition to make the score 5-0. Brock Franklin added a score on the break before Dalton Brodie scored inside to push the lead to 9-0.

“That held us over for a long time,” Culp said of his team’s start to the game. “I don’t think they tied the game until midway through the third quarter, we had the lead the whole time. It was very important. We know we can play defense. That is one of our (strengths) the last few years.

“But, like I said on the radio, when you are holding a team and playing good defense, you have to build a lead larger than eight or nine points. We should have been up 15, which makes it a lot harder for them to come back.”

With the margin remaining at nine by the start of the second period, the Mounties cut the lead to two, 14-12, after back-to-back 3-balls from Nick Quinn and Alonzo Porchia, with a free throw added on moments later.

Neosho answered back with a 3-pointer from the wing by Landon Werneke to end the run, and the Wildcats held pace to go into the intermission with a 24-20 advantage.

“That was big (to stop that run),” Culp said. “It seemed like we (stopped their momentum) even when the game was going back and forth. It looked like they had the momentum and then we would hit a 3 and take the lead or get fouled and take the lead.”

Rogers tied the game near the midway mark of the third quarter at 25-25 after Collin Chrisman stole an inbounds pass before scoring on the break and drawing a foul for a three-point play. The Mounties took their first lead of the game shortly after when Van Rhame scored underneath on an inbounds play with 3:50 left in the third to make the score 27-26.

Shortly after Rogers took the lead, Brodie and Landon Austin picked up their fourth fouls, sending them to the bench for the remainder of the quarter. Despite not having two of their starters on the floor, Neosho fought its way to a 33-33 tie after three quarters following a Flynn 3-pointer from the top of the key with 4.3 seconds on the clock.

“I think that is great experience for the guys out there,” Culp said. “Down the line, we could be in foul trouble again and we are going to have to give guys breaks. We can’t play the seniors every minute of every game. … It’s exciting to see that when we do get in foul trouble, we can still do some things. … The younger guys stepped up, especially defensively.”

The lead changed hands three times in the third quarter, and the back-and-forth pace didn’t dissipate to open the final period. The Wildcats and Mounties traded baskets early and often to see the lead change six more times to start the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t until Austin fouled out with 2:48 to play in regulation with the game tied at 43-43 that the Mounties were able to separate themselves. Rogers took the lead for the final time with 2:30 to play when Porchia scored on the break and was fouled for a three-point play to make the score 46-43.

From there, the Mounties held the Wildcats off the scoreboard the rest of the way while closing the win out on an 11-0 run.

“We are going to have to find a way to get better shots when he is not on the floor,” Culp said. “Even when he is on the floor. That will be something we will be working on.”

Flynn led Neosho with 16 points, while Austin finished with nine and Werneke with eight. Brodie finished with six points in the loss.

Porchia led Rogers with 15 points, while Quinn closed with 13. Rhame added nine, while Joel Garner finished with seven.

Neosho travels to McDonald County on Dec. 11.
