Joplin’s rally comes up short in 51-43 loss to Ozark

Joplin fell behind by four possessions near the end of the third quarter only to see a late rally come up short, as the Eagles fell 51-43 to Ozark on Friday at Junge Field on Senior Night.

“We just have to get better, and there are a lot of things we can get better at,” Joplin coach Curtis Jasper said. “We are doing some good things, too, but we just are not being very consistent.”

Joplin’s loss marks the first time the Eagles have fallen in consecutive contests since losing to Webb City and Carthage in Week 2 and 3 of the 2018 season.

Joplin honored 13 seniors before the game in Senior Night ceremonies.

“They are upset right now, and I don’t blame them,” Jasper said. “I told them the only way to fix this feeling is to work hard and stick together. … I expect a lot of leadership from them to turn this back into a positive direction.”

Joplin (1-2) trailed 44-19 with 3:45 on the clock in the third period after Ozark’s Jacob Kronebusch picked up an Always Wright fumble and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown followed by a 27-yard field goal from Jace Easley later in the period.

Joplin answered with a 14-play, 73-yard scoring drive that culminated with Wright finding Landen Atherton for a 12-yard touchdown — Atherton’s first score of the season — on the last play of the third quarter, cutting the Tiger lead to 44-27.

“It is nice to see guys come in, (like Landen), fill a role and perform well,” said Jasper.

Ozark answered back on the opening possession of the fourth, with quarterback Cannon Cox hitting Owen Brockman in stride for a 31-yard touchdown connection to push the lead to 51-27 with 9:12 remaining.

Joplin replied with a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Nathan Glades, with Wright finding Terrance Gibson to convert the two-point try to make the score 51-35 with 8:10 remaining.

After Joplin’s defense forced a three-and-out, the Eagles went on an 11-play drive that ended with Glades crossing the goal line for the fourth time. Glades then converted the two-point try on a run to get Joplin within one possession, 51-43, with 3:45 left.

Ozark’s Thomas Rushing fumbled a second-down carry over to Joplin with 2:09 left, with Jacob Prosser recovering it for Joplin, giving the Eagles one last chance to tie the game up and send it into overtime.

After three straight runs from Glades, picking up 24 yards, Wright scrambled for a 12-yard gain on third-down-and-6 to get the Eagles inside the Ozark 25-yard line. The rally ended two plays later when Wright was picked off at the goal line by Rushing with less than a minute to play, with the Tigers kneeling out the remaining clock.

“Anytime you lose it’s tough,” Jasper said. “And I am not into moral victories, but it was nice to see the kids not give up, continue to fight and try to persevere.”

Joplin finished with 608 yards of offense in the loss. Glades carried the ball 31 times for 268 yards and four touchdowns to go along with four catches for 52 yards. Wright completed 23-of-35 passes for 340 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

“They were making plays,” Jasper said of Glades’ and Wright’s performances. “Nathan is a bulldog whether it is in the run game or the pass game. Always was able to use his legs to buy himself some time to make plays and get guys open.”

Keaton Renfro caught five passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Atherton hauled in five passes for 69 yards, while Trayshawn Thomas caught five passes for 41 yards. Dante Washington, who left the game with an injury, caught four passes for 79 yards.

Ozark picked up 387 yards of offense in the win. Tylr Bolin carried the ball 23 times for 107 yards, while quarterback Cannon Cox rushed 20 times for 76 yards. Cox had a pair of passing scores as well. Ethan Pritchard ran eight times for 101 yards.

“You don’t want to do too much live tackling in practice because you don’t want to get yourself banged up, but obviously we have to get better at that,” Jasper said. “We did better as the game went on, but we have to be better from the get-go.”

Carl Junction’s late rally falls short at Branson

BRANSON, Mo. — For the second week in a row, the Carl Junction Bulldogs came up one point short.

And coincidentally, the score was identical.

Branson held on late for a 21-20 win over the Bulldogs on Friday night in Central Ozark Conference action. The Bulldogs suffered a 21-20 loss to Carthage last week.

The Pirates racked up three touchdowns in the first half to take a 21-0 lead.

But Carl Junction came storming back in the fourth quarter, however, and ended up within one point of the lead. But it wasn’t enough.

Everything was coming up roses for the Pirates in the first half. After a quick first possession by the Bulldogs, Branson struck quickly with a 4-yard run by Payton McCormick after a long drive, going up 7-0 with 6:38 left in the first.

On the next Carl Junction drive, the Pirates struck again, as Branson’s Josiah Hutchinson picked off a Bulldog pass, running it back for a touchdown with 5:28 left to take a 14-0 lead.

Branson (1-2) struck again with 6:33 left in the half on a 1-yard run by Cristian Berumen to go into the locker room with a 21-0 lead.

In the second half, Carl Junction put on a fierce rally.

The Bulldogs struck for a score with 1:48 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Brady Sims to trim the deficit to 21-7.

At 7:52 left in the fourth, Carl Junction found the end zone again, on a 6-yard run by quarterback Kyler Perry on a keeper to make the score 21-14.

The final score of the game came with just 18 second left, when Perry fired a quick pass to Noah Southern and the score sat at 21-20. The point-after-try was no good, with Branson recovering the onside kick to preserve the win.

Carl Junction (1-2) faces Joplin (1-2) at home next week.

Carthage stays unbeaten with 42-7 win over Neosho

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage Tigers flexed their offensive depth in a 42-7 win over the Neosho Wildcats at David Haffner Stadium on Friday night.

Playing without starting running back Luke Gall, who led the team in rushing with 333 yards through two weeks, Carthage (3-0, 3-0 COC) leaned heavily on senior quarterback Patrick Carlton, but also got contributions from sophomore wide receiver Hudson Moore, and running backs Cale Patrick, Ashton Lancaster and Rylee Barker.

Carlton ran for four touchdowns and threw another, totaling 201 yards on 7-of-8 passing attempts and 57 rushing yards in handling Neosho (0-3).

After committing a combined nine turnovers in the season’s first two games, the Tigers cut that number to one giveaway, a fumble, in Friday night’s game.

“We keep telling our kids that the thing that’s stopping us is us,” Carthage coach Jon Guidie said. “And we had a penalty that brought back a touchdown and of course we fumbled, but other than that I thought we were pretty efficient offensively. I thought we did a nice job throwing the football, mixing it up. We didn’t have Luke Gall tonight so that factored into some things, but Pat did a good job, Hudson Moore had some great catches again tonight.”

Guidie didn’t offer specifics on the injury that held Gall out of the game, saying only that the sophomore was “banged up, beat up a little bit.”

Moore caught both passes thrown his way for a total of 82 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown. Barker caught three passes for 79 yards, one of which was a screen pass he turned into a 53-yard gain to set up Carlton’s second rushing touchdown just two plays later. Patrick and Lancaster chipped in on offense with 32 rushing yards each, and Lancaster capped the game’s scoring with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Neosho remains in search of its first win of the season, but did earn its first points of the year with a marathon third-quarter drive that culminated in an 8-yard touchdown run by junior running back Talon Mitchell. Receiving the second-half kickoff, Neosho ate nearly 11 minutes off the clock with an 18-play, 72-yard drive, on which they went to Mitchell for nine carries that produced 32 yards.

The Tigers’ win sets up a Week 4 matchup with rival Webb City (2-1), the last team to hand Carthage a loss. The Tigers have now won 12-straight games since their regular season defeat by the Cardinals last season.

Guidie said the improved ball security his team showed against Neosho will be important against Webb City and that he expects whichever defense contains the opposing offense better will prevail.

“Obviously you just try to go business as usual,” he said. “But its a rivalry, it definitely is, and we’ve had some really good games over the last few years. It’s big, it’s big for a lot of people in both communities and both schools and, you know, conference championship, that’s kind of up for grabs right now, too. So you factor all of that stuff in, I think it’s going to be a pretty exciting atmosphere.”

Carthage’s Cale Patrick (5) runs to the outside as Neosho’s Kaden Decker (70) comes up short on the stop in Friday night’s game.

Big first half leads Webb City past Republic 49-28

The Webb City Cardinals scored all of their points in the first half in a convincing 49-28 win over Republic on Friday night in Central Ozark Conference football action at Republic High School’s Tiger Stadium.

The Cardinals improved to 2-1 in 2020, while the Tigers (2-1) lost for the first time after beginning the season with two wins.

The contest was deadlocked at 14, as the hosts pulled off a couple of big pass plays early in the game. But the Cardinals scored 28 unanswered points to take control. By the break, Webb City’s lead was 49-21.

NAMES & NUMBERS

Webb City compiled 419 yards of offense, with 299 rushing and 120 passing.

Webb City senior running back Devrin Weathers once again stood out. A Kansas State recruit, Weathers finished with 124 rushing yards on nine carries (14 per carry) with three touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Cole Gayman passed for 120 yards on six completions with two scores. Cohl Vaden hauled in both touchdown passes and 73 receiving yards on three catches. Cade Wilson ran for 41 yards and caught one pass for 29 yards, while Gary Clinton had two receptions for 18 yards and Dupree Jackson ran for 45 yards on five carries.

Cameron Clark was 7-for-7 on PAT kicks for the Cardinals. Webb City’s Lucas Ott was credited with nine tackles.

Republic finished with 331 yards, with 213 passing and 118 rushing. Gavyn Beckner passed for 179 yards and Landon Porter had 173 receiving yards.

GAME RECAP

Webb City led 28-14 at the end of a high-scoring first quarter.

Gayman completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Vaden on the first series of the night, but the Tigers responded when Porter scored on a 1-yard plunge just a few plays later. The touchdown was set up by a 58-yard pass from Beckner to Porter.

Webb City’s Shane Noel returned the ensuing kick 82 yards to the end zone before Republic answered immediately, as Porter hauled in an 85-yard touchdown pass from Beckner.

Weathers sprinted past the Republic defense for a 50-yard touchdown run at the 7:26 mark of the first period, and after forcing a three and out, Webb City went up 28-14 on a 4-yard touchdown run by Weathers.

Wilson scored on a 12-yard run early in the second period. After a Treghan Parker interception, the Cardinals extended their lead when Gayman connected with Vaden for a 28-yard touchdown pass for a comfortable 42-14 advantage.

Republic’s Chase Buford hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass with 5:41 left in the first half, but Weathers showed off his speed once again, sprinting past the defense while making a couple of defenders miss on his way to a 60-yard touchdown run.

Webb City’s reserves gained plenty of playing time after the break. Republic’s Memphis Maples ran for a 57-yard touchdown with just over two minutes left in the game for the final margin.
