NIXA 9, JOPLIN 0

Joplin suffered a 9-0 setback to Nixa at the JHS athletic complex.

“Nixa has a lot of depth with 31 players on their roster if you include JV,” Joplin coach Aaron Stump said. “Joplin has a team of 15 players this year including JV. We played with grit in today’s matchup, making Nixa earn the victory in multiple matches. We have things to work on so that we can be more competitive late in the season.”

In doubles action, Joplin’s Logan Merkley and Jeffrey Evenson lost to Isaac Forbis and Benjamin Mills 8-0, while Ben Wardlow-Colin Vermillion lost to Dallin Attwooll-Mason Murray 8-3 and Josh Yarnall-Michael Mancipe lost a close match to Brody Ball-Trey Hartwell 8-6.

“Josh and Michael started the match out with a slight lead,” Stump said. “But the Nixa players came back and were able to hold on and win.”

At No. 1 singles, Forbis edged Joplin’s Merkley 8-6.

“Logan was down 7-2,” Stump said. “His determination and hustle helped him gain momentum and brought him back to make this a close match.”

Nixa’s Mills beat Evenson 8-4, Attwooll edged Wardlow 8-6 and Murray nipped Yarnall 9-7.

“Josh played our closest match of the day,” Stump noted. “He ran tennis balls all over the court throughout the match, which is what kept the match so close.”
