GIRLS TENNIS: Thomas Jefferson singles players advance to individual sectional

Thomas Jefferson was the host for the Class 1 District 12 individual girls tennis tournament on Friday. 

The top two finishers in singles and doubles advanced to next week’s sectional round of the state tournament.

In singles play, Thomas Jefferson’s Allison Ding was the district champion, with teammate Jeanna Jeyaraj the runner-up.

Ding defeated College Heights Christian’s Natalie Brueggemann 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Lamar’s Leah McDonald 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. McDonald advanced to the semis by topping Nevada’s Kourtnee Vestal 7-6, 6-4.

Jeyaraj defeated Nevada’s Kallie Erwin 6-0, 6-0 and College Heights’ Jem Kionisala 6-1, 6-2. Kionisala had beaten Lamar’s Julia Stettler 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the opening round.

In the championship match, Ding defeated Jeyaraj 6-1, 6-0. 

For third place, Kionisala defeated McDonald 8-3.

The top two doubles teams were Nevada’s Laura Kimmell and Halley Elkington and Lamar’s Cora Pittsenbarger and Avery Bennett. The Nevada squad defeated the Lamar duo 6-7 (8-6), 6-1, 10-3 in the title match.

For third place, Thomas Jefferson’s Kyla Yang and Jessica Joseph defeated College Heights Christian’s Ella Bishop and Jeanna Smathers 8-5.

Yang-Joseph beat CHC’s Avery Baker and Hannah Bass 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the quarterfinals before falling to Kimmell-Elkington 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. 

Bishop-Smathers beat Nevada’s Susannah Kimmell-Abbigale Baldwin 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) before falling to Pittsenbarger-Bennett 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Thomas Jefferson’s Warda Morsy-Emalee Ro lost to Lamar’s Pittsenbarger and Bennett 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. 

Thomas Jefferson will also host the sectional event on Oct. 8. 

Also of note, the district team tournament begins on Monday. Top-seeded Thomas Jefferson hosts No. 4 Nevada and No. 2 Lamar hosts No. 3 College Heights. Both matches are scheduled to start at 3:30.
