PREP SOFTBALL: Jones, Elder lead Carthage past McDonald County

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Jordyn Jones drove in two runs and Jensyn Elder was dominant in the circle to lead Carthage past McDonald County 2-1 on Wednesday. 

The win moves the Tigers to 10-10 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 8-2.

Jones gave Carthage the initial lead in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out single to center that scored Natalie Rodriguez from third for a 1-0 advantage.

McDonald County tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Reagan Myrick tripled to center with one out before scoring on Madeline McCall sacrifice fly to right.

Jones came up big again for the Tigers in the last of the sixth inning, which was started by Ashlyn Brust reaching on a two-out to right field. Jones followed with a go-ahead RBI double to left to plate Brust and give Carthage a 2-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Elder was busy holding the Mustangs to one run on one hit, two walks and 11 strikeouts in a complete-game, seven-inning effort to earn the win.

McCall took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits, a walk and sevens strikeouts in six innings.

Jones had two hits, including a double, and two RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate. Brust had a hit and scored a run. Mary Grace Richmond, Landry Cochran and Presley Probert all recorded hits for Carthage. 

Myrick led McDonald County with one hit and a run scored, while McCall picked up the lone RBI.

Carthage hosts Republic on Thursday, while McDonald County is at Cassville on Thursday.
