The Joplin High School girls tennis team ventured to the Heather Bradshaw Invitational in Edwardsville, Illinois, over the weekend.

The Eagles got one match in, a 9-0 loss to New Trier (IL) on Friday before poor weather in the area wiped out Saturday’s action at the event near St. Louis.

Joplin coach Ben Coltharp noted the trip was a good learning experience for the Eagles.

“New Trier is a very challenging program,” Coltharp said. “It’s in the suburbs of Chicago and has over 100 players, with three varsity teams, 11 coaches and 38 courts. I knew going into this tournament, especially being in the ‘Champions Bracket,’ that we were going to see stiff competition. But this was the best I’ve seen the girls play all season. They held their heads up high. As I tell the girls, there’s no winning and losing, just winning and learning.”

At No. 1 singles, New Trier’s Hannah Bustelow defeated Joplin’s Emma Watts 6-1, 6-4, 10-3.

In other singles matches, Haley Thomson defeated Mya Ndedi Ntepe 6-0, 6-0, Megan Kramer topped Jensen Vowels 6-0, 6-2, Anya Mockencherry beat Brynn Driver 6-0, 6-1, Sophia Branaenberger defeated Alex Carson 6-0, 6-1 and Shaili Das beat Zayda Derganc 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Bustelow-Thomson defeated Watts-Driver 8-2, while Kramer-Mockencherry beat Vowels-Ndedi Ntepe 8-1 and Anna Bennet-Lia Bennet topped Carson-Gwenna Street 8-0.

Joplin is at Republic on Tuesday for a Central Ozark Conference matchup.
