BOYS GOLF: Spencer earns medalist honors at Horton Smith invite, Carthage claims team crown

Local boys golf teams converged on Schifferdecker Golf Course on Monday for the annual Horton Smith Invitational.

When all was said and done, Carl Junction’s Jack Spencer earned medalist honors and Carthage captured the team championship.

A sophomore at Carl Junction, Spencer carded a 2-under-par 69 (36-33) to finish on top of the individual leaderboard.

Carthage’s Owen Derryberry (37-35) and Webb City’s Levi Lassiter (36-36) tied for second place with identical scores of 72.

Joplin’s Harry Satterlee finished fourth with a 74, while Webb City’s Cooper Forth took fifth after carding 76.

Carl Junction’s Tommy Walker and Carthage’s duo of Max Templeman and Britt Coy all turned in scores of 77 to tie for sixth place.

Carthage’s Colson Brust and Seneca’s tandem of Eli Olson and Jeremy Haase all carded 79 to tie for ninth place.

Carl Junction’s Jacob Teeter and Webb City’s Braxten Cahoon tied for 12th place with 80s, while Carl Junction’s Logan Lowry, Joplin’s Ian Surbrugg and Lockwood’s Easton Cossins all shot 81 and tied for 14th place.

Rounding out the top 20 were Joplin’s Dylan Bozarth (82), Carthage’s Ben Nicholas (83), Neosho’s Collier Hendricks (83), Carl Junction’s Austin Baker (84) and Joplin’s Hobbs Campbell (84).

College Heights Christian’s Logan Decker shot 85 and finished 22nd, while Thomas Jefferson’s duo of Jack Tyrrell (86) and Beck McKinney (87) were 23rd and 24th, respectively. Neosho’s Colby Shadwick finished 25th (88).

There were 59 golfers from 13 teams competing.

As far as the team standings, Carthage put together a four-person score of 305 to claim the team plaque. The Tigers had four players shoot in the 70s.

Carl Junction was a close second in the team competition with a 307, while Webb City (317) and Joplin (321) were third and fourth in the standings.

Rounding out the team standings were Seneca (336), Lockwood (357), Neosho (365), Thomas Jefferson (391), Sarcoxie (392), College Heights (401) and Nevada (403). McDonald County and Purdy had incomplete teams.
