PITTSBURG, Kan. — Carl Junction’s girls rode a pair of first half runs to a convincing 57-27 win over the Pittsburg Purple Dragons on Thursday night in the opening-round of the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament.
Carl Junction scored 16 unanswered points in the first period and then rattled off 14 straight in the second quarter to take a comfortable 37-9 lead at the break.
With eight points apiece from Destiny Buerge and Klohe Burk, the Bulldogs were up 18-6 by the end of the opening period.
Hoops from Buerge, Hali Shorter, Ellie Lawson and Kylie Scott extended Carl Junction’s lead past 20 at 28-6.
The Bulldogs, who outscored the Dragons 19-3 in the second quarter, led by 28 at intermission.
Carl Junction’s lead was 52-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Buerge scored 21 points to lead Carl Junction, while Scott had nine and Burk added eight. Lawson contributed seven points and Shorter had five.
Megan Johnston scored 13 points to lead Pittsburg.
The Bulldogs will meet Carthage in the tourney semifinals at 5:30 on Friday at Pittsburg High School.
