BOYS HOOPS: With dominant win, Webb City claims first Frontenac tourney championship

FRONTENAC, Kan. — The fourth time was definitely the charm for the Webb City Cardinals.

After falling short in three previous championship games at Frontenac High School, the Cardinals got over the hump in 2022.

Ignited by a fast start, and in control from the start, Webb City earned a convincing 90-61 victory over Life Prep Academy on Saturday in the championship game of the Four State Raider Classic.

The Cardinals had finished as the runner-up three consecutive times at the tourney formerly known as the Kansas Army National Guard Invitational.

But this year was different.

“This one feels good,” Webb City coach Jason Horn said. “This was our fourth straight year in this game and after coming up short in the last three, we felt like we had a lot of pressure on us coming into this game. I thought our guys were really focused and just made plays tonight.”

In what was arguably the team’s best first period of the season, Webb City overwhelmed Life Prep from the tip, as the Cardinals raced out to a commanding 26-11 lead in a clash they would never trail.

“Defensively, we were really good at the start of the game,” Horn said. “We got the game at the pace we wanted it at. Our defense got us some easy runouts and our guys were feeling good offensively and started making plays.”

Ranked eighth in Class 5, Webb City improved to 12-4 with the lopsided win.

NAMES & NUMBERS

Three players reached double figures for Webb City. Junior guard Dante Washington led the way with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while senior guard/forward Kaden Turner scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and junior forward Trey Roets contributed 18 points after making 8-of-11 shots.

Roets had eight rebounds, while Washington recorded three steals and three assists.

Washington and Turner were all-tourney selections.

Senior point guard Cohl Vaden contributed six points and three assists and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“He deserves it,” Horn said of his varsity veteran. “He had a great tournament. He does so much for us. He can score if we need him to score. He can be a defensive stopper. He plays a lot of minutes. There’s a lot on his shoulders and he’s doing a great job of leading our team.”

The Cardinals, who had 12 players score in the contest, shot 52 percent for the game (33-of-64).

“I’ve said it all year, our guys do a great job of sharing the basketball,” Horn said. “That was a point of emphasis tonight. They valued the ball. I think we only had two turnovers in the first half.”

Based in Wichita, Life Prep fell to 7-4. Michael Johnson scored 20 points for the Fire, who made 21-of-55 field goal attempts (38 percent).

Life Prep had 23 turnovers to Webb City’s 10.

GAME RECAP

Looking fired up from the start, Webb City stormed out of the gates by scoring the game’s first 11 points. While the Cardinals were clicking on all cylinders offensively, they were also active defensively.

Webb City took a comfortable 19-4 advantage after Washington scored six straight points.

Late in the opening frame, Vaden scored in the lane before Max Higginbotham and Roets drained 3-pointers to give Webb City a 15-point cushion.

“We were able to mix our defenses and we did a good job of getting in the passing lanes,” Horn said. “Offensively, we were sharing the ball and I thought we executed really well. Whether they went man or zone, we were able to run our stuff and execute at a high level. We got a lot of easy looks. When we get paint touches, set good screens and execute, we’ve got a lot of guys who can score the basketball and shoot at a high level.”

It was more of the same in the second quarter, as Webb City’s balanced attack, fast pace and trapping defense were too much for the Fire.

Turner recorded a hoop inside, Roets scored five straight points and then Washington finished strong at the rim in transition to give the Cards a 35-15 cushion.

Turner threw down a dunk off an alley-oop from Vaden and the Cardinals were up big at the break, 47-23.

The Cardinals didn’t let up in the third quarter, and Webb City’s lead was 68-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

Horn got his reserves plenty of minutes in the final frame, as the final outcome was never in doubt.

Webb City is at Hillcrest on Tuesday.

BILL HANSON MEMORIAL: Carthage girls fall in title game and CJ takes third; Joplin boys fall to Willard

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Turnovers plagued Carthage early and helped Kickapoo build a sizable lead by the intermission before holding serve in the second half for a 47-26 win in the girls championship game of the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

“The score may not reflect it, but I’m pretty proud of how we played today,” Carthage coach Scott Moore said to SoMo Sports. “We battled one of the top teams in the state and kept them below their season scoring average. Kickapoo is tall, talented and aggressive. They play the game with the speed that we want to play. Today, we just didn’t seem to have the legs to run with them for 32 minutes. We used a lot of energy and emotion to beat Carl Junction yesterday, so our shots fell short today and Kickapoo capitalized on that in transition.”

Carthage moves to 8-10 on the season and the way to the second-place tournament finish. The Tigers are on the road against Seneca on Thursday.

“We wanted to bring home the championship trophy today,” Moore added. “So the girls are a little disappointed. However, they should be proud of themselves for the work they did to put us in position to compete in the championship game.”

Carthage held an early 5-2 lead off a 3-pointer from Kianna Yates before Kickapoo swung the momentum with a 10-0 run, backed by a strong defensive effort. The Chiefs turned the Tigers over three times for baskets the other way in the surge, which was highlighted by two buckets and two free throws from Kaya Goldsby.

Kickapoo took a 14-9 lead into the second period and pulled out to a double-digit cushion after limiting Carthage to one field goal and a free throw in the quarter. The Chiefs used a 13-0 run to build a 31-11 lead before going into halftime up 19 points. Mikayla Pilley highlighted the run with seven points on three field goals.

Carthage opened the second half on an 8-2 run started by 3-pointers from Landry Cochran and Maggie Boyd to trim the lead down to 13, but Kickapoo closed the period with the final six points to push the lead to 19 to start the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs pushed the lead to more than 20 points in the fourth quarter and held the pace down the stretch.

Ysabella Fontleroy finished with 16 points to lead the Chiefs in scoring. Goldsby added 10 points and Pilley finished with seven.

Yates had seven points to lead Carthage, while Boyd had five. Cochran and Lauren Choate each finished with three in the loss.

Down one heading into the fourth, Carl Junction (13-5) opened the final eight minutes with an 11-0 run to completely flip the momentum. Klohe Burk started the run with a bucket inside to give the Bulldogs the 26-24 lead before Destiny Buerge scored the next four on a mid-range jumper and a pair of free throws before Kylie Scott closed out the run with three straight buckets in the paint to give the Bulldogs a 36-25 advantage with 4:52 left in regulation.

After a 3-pointer from BVNW’s Brynn Grosdidier, Buerge added two more free throws before Scott followed with a three-point play. Buerge added an up-and-under score as Carl Junction built a 44-28 lead in the closing minutes.

Carl Junction scored 24 points through the first three quarters before the 20-point outburst in the fourth. The Bulldogs limited the Huskies to seven points over the final eight minutes.

Buerge led all scorers with 26 points, while Scott finished with 12, nine coming in the fourth quarter.

Grosdidier led Blue Valley Northwest with nine points.

JOPLIN BOYS FALL TO WILLARD IN FIFTH-PLACE GAME

Willard built a small lead by the intermission before pulling away down the stretch for a 71-54 win over Joplin in the boys fifth-place game of the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament.

The Eagles (12-4) took a 17-16 lead into the second quarter before the Tigers outscored Joplin 13-6 in the second period to take a six-point lead into the intermission. Willard pushed the lead to nine to start the fourth and pulled away in the final eight minutes of action.

BILL HANSON MEMORIAL: Carthage girls rout Cassville in opening round

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Carthage girls basketball held Cassville to single-digit scoring in every quarter while building a big lead early on the way to a 63-29 win to open the Bill Hanson Memorial basketball tournament on Thursday at Pittsburg High School.

The Tigers (7-9, 0-2 COC) were led by point guard Kianna Yates, who finished with a game-high and career-high 34 points in the win. Yates, who had 19 first-half points, converted six times from the perimeter. Maggie Boyd knocked down three 3-pointers on the way to nine points for Carthage.

Pittsburg was led in scoring by Riley Morris, who finished with 13 points. Sharayah Seymour closed with eight points in the loss.

“Kianna Yates had an amazing 34 points tonight as she scored inside and outside against Cassville’s zone,” Carthage coach Scott Moore said to SoMo Sports. “When she’s on fire, there isn’t much the other team can do to stop her.

“However, it was our total team defense that set the tone for this game for 32 minutes. Our full-court press and overall ball pressure kept Cassville from running any semblance of offense, which is what our goal is every night.”

Carthage advances to play conference rival Carl Junction in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. in the main gym on Friday.

“We now need to refocus our energy and prepare for Carl Junction tomorrow,” Moore said. “We had a close, tough game with them a week ago. So, our girls should be mentally and physically ready to battle them again tomorrow.”

BOYS HOOPS: Carthage finishes strong, knocks off state-ranked Shawnee Mission South

CHANUTE, Kan. — The Carthage Tigers wouldn’t be denied.

With a gritty overall performance and a strong finish, the Tigers knocked off one of the top teams from the state of Kansas on Wednesday night.

Carthage earned a hard-fought 80-72 victory over Shawnee Mission South in double overtime in the opening round of the Ralph Miller Classic at Chanute High School.

Shawnee Mission South (6-2) is ranked seventh in Class 6A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

The game was deadlocked at 59 at the end of regulation and was tied at 70 at the conclusion of the first overtime before the Tigers outscored the Raiders 10-2 in the second OT.

Carthage took the lead for good in the second extra session when Justin Ray drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Joel Pugh hit two free throws.

The Tigers also drew a pair of charges early in the second OT and went 7-for-8 from the foul line to earn what could be described as a signature win.

Receiving votes in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 6 poll, Carthage improved its season record to 13-2.

Four players scored in double figures for the Tigers.

Carthage went up 26-20 late in the second quarter before the Raiders scored five straight to end the first half. With that, the Tigers led 26-25 at intermission.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Templeman gave Carthage a 38-36 lead late in the third period, but the Raiders hit a 3-pointer on the other end to take a one-point advantage into the fourth quarter.

Kinder and Ray hit key 3-pointers for the Tigers late in regulation, but the Raiders responded each time.

In the first OT, Caden Kabance made a short jumper and Templeman scored on a baseline drive to give Carthage the lead, but the Raiders tied it up with two seconds left.

The Tigers scored the first five points of the second overtime and then converted more than enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
